A method of manufacturing a surface mount device includes providing at least one core device and at least one lead frame. The core device is attached to the lead frame. The core device and the lead frame are encapsulated within an encapsulant. The encapsulant comprises a liquid epoxy that when cured has an oxygen permeability of less than approximately 0.4 cm3&#xb7;mm/m2&#xb7;atm&#xb7;day.

Method for manufacturing a surface mount device

A method of manufacturing a surface mount device includes forming a plaque from a material, forming a plurality of conductive protrusions on a top surface and a bottom surface of the plaque, and applying a liquid encapsulant over at least a portion of the top surface and at least a portion of the bottom surface of the plaque. The liquid encapsulant is cured and when cured encapsulant has an oxygen permeability of less than about 0.4 cm3&#xb7;mm/m2&#xb7;atm&#xb7;day. The assembly is cut to provide a plurality of components. After cutting, the top surface of each component includes at least one conductive protrusion, the bottom surface of each component includes at least one conductive protrusion, the top surface and the bottom surface of each component include the cured encapsulant, and a core of each component includes the material.

A circuit protection device includes a substrate with first and second electrodes connected to the circuit to be protected. The circuit protection device also includes a heater element. A sensing element facilitates an electrical connection between the first and second electrodes. A flux material is provided around the sensing element. In a preferred embodiment, the flux contains a first component that is a polar material and a second component that is a non-polar material. A spring element exerts a force on the sensing element. The sensing element resists the force applied by the spring element. Upon detection of an activation, or fault, condition, the sensing element loses resilience and no longer resists the force exerted by the spring element, resulting in the spring element severing the electrical connection between the first and second electrodes. The flux allows the spring element to sever the electrical connection without dragging the sensing element.

Reflowable circuit protection device

A circuit protection device includes a base assembly, a spring on top of the base, a conductive terminal that fits over the base and spring, and a cap that first over the base, spring and terminal. The base includes latches on the front side of the base. The conductive terminal includes a first end on the front side of the base and a second end on a rear side of the base that is opposite to the front side. The cap includes a first protrusion extending downward from the cap above one of the latches and a second protrusion extending downward from the cap above the other latch. The circuit protection device also includes a means for activating the circuit protection device after reflow in response to a force applied to the cap in a first direction defined from a top of the cap towards the base.

A circuit protection device is configured to protect circuit elements under any one of the following three activation conditions: an over current condition, an over temperature condition, and an activation control current received by a heater element. The circuit element includes first and second electrodes, and the heater element. A sliding contact is connected by a sensing element to the first electrode, second electrode, and heater element, thereby bridging and providing a conductive path between each. A spring element is held in tension by, and exerts a force against, the sliding contact. Upon detection of any one of three activation conditions, the sensing element releases the sliding contact and the force exerted by the spring element moves the sliding contact to another location on the substrate at which the sliding contact no longer provides a conductive path between the first electrode, second electrode, and heater element.

Three-function reflowable circuit protection device

A reflowable thermal fuse includes a positive-temperature-coefficient (PTC) device that defines a first end and a second end, a conduction element that defines a first end and a second end in electrical communication with the second end of the PTC device, and a restraining element that defines a first end in electrical communication with the first end of the PTC device and a second end, in electrical communication with a second end of the conduction element. The restraining element is adapted to prevent the conduction element from coming out of electrical communication with the PTC device in an installation state of the thermal fuse. During a fault condition, heat applied to the thermal fuse diverts current flowing between the first end of the PTC device and the second end of the conduction element to the restraining element, causing the restraining element to release the conduction element and activate the fuse.

Method of placing a thermal fuse on a panel

A circuit protection device includes a substrate with first and second electrodes connected to the circuit to be protected. The circuit protection device also includes a heater element between the first and second electrodes. A sliding contact is connected by a sensing element to the first electrode, second electrode, and heater element, thereby bridging and providing a conductive path between each. A spring element is held in tension by, and exerts a force parallel to a length of the substrate against, the sliding contact. Upon detection of an activation condition, the sensing element releases the sliding contact and the force exerted by the spring element moves the sliding contact to another location on the substrate at which the sliding contact no longer provides a conductive path between the first electrode, second electrode, and heater element.

Reflowable thermal fuse

A circuit protection device () suitable for surface mounting on a substrate (). The device has a laminar PTC resistive element () which is composed of a conductive polymer composition and is positioned between first and second electrodes (). Attached to the first electrode is a first electrical terminal () containing an electrically conductive material which has a first attachment portion () connected to a first flexible portion () by means of a first connection portion (). At least part of the first flexible portion is free of attachment to the first electrode. The first attachment portion is coplanar with at least one of the first connection portion and the first flexible portion. The first attachment portion may contain a slot () and a solid hinge portion (). When the device is mounted on a substrate by means of a mounting component () extending from the first terminal, the first flexible portion allows contraction and expansion of the conductive polymer despite the rigid attachment of the mounting component onto the substrate.

Circuit protection device

An inexpensive coaxial cable connector, and an inexpensive contact which is suitable for use in an such an inexpensive coaxial cable connector, the connector and the contact being capable of passing electrical signals from low frequency power up to and including telecommunications signals in the range of 1 GHz or more. The connector comprises an elongate, hollow, conductive, cylindrical barrel having an inner radius, R.sub.BARREL, and a first longitudinal axis; and an elongate, conductive contact. The contact has a first end and a second end which define a length therebetween, a second longitudinal axis, and comprises a cylindrical section. The cylindrical section has an outer radius, R.sub.CONTACT, which is less than R.sub.BARREL. The cylindrical section comprises a first external end which is coincident with one of the first end and the second end of the contact, a hollow interior, a first longitudinal slot, the slot located near the external end of the cylindrical section, and has a proximal end and a distal end. The contact also comprises a first spring-tab which is located within the first longitudinal slot and formed from a cut-out which forms the first longitudinal slot. The spring-tab has a fixed end and a free end, the fixed end joined at the proximal end of the slot. The first spring-tab extends generally from the proximal end of the slot toward the distal end of the slot and into the hollow interior of the cylindrical section. The connector comprises means for supporting the contact in the barrel so that the cylindrical section of the contact is contained within and spaced apart from the barrel and the second longitudinal axis is substantially coincident with the first longitudinal axis. The supporting means comprises a dielectric material.

Coaxial cable connector

A sealed F-connector, with a threaded section and a recessed section adjacent the threaded section, has a ring-shaped elastomeric sealing member formed within the recessed section and affixed to the surface of the recessed section. When a connector shell from a mating connector is screwed on, the sealing member deforms as the connector shell screws on over the sealing member, thereby lining at least a portion of the internal thread of the connector shell and at least a portion of the recessed section of the F-connector. The deformed sealing member thereby establishes a barrier to the penetration of moisture between the F-connector and the mating connector.

Sealed coaxial cable connector

A connector for connecting an end of a first elongate electrical heating cable to an end of a first elongate electrical component such as another heating cable or a power cable. The connector includes first and second shell members which can be in a mated or demated configuration and which, when mated, form a shell having a first inlet port for the first heating cable and a second inlet port for the first electrical component. In addition, the connector includes an element for connecting electrodes of the first heating cable to elongate members of the first electrical component and a sealing assembly for holding the first heating cable in position in the first inlet port. The sealing assembly includes a hollow cylindrical ring from which gripping elements in the form of fingers extend perpendicular to the plane of the ring, a nut for making connection to the first inlet port, and a grommet which is held by the fingers and which grips the first heating cable. Also described is a connector which comprises a mirror which is inserted in a connection module containing an element for connection, the mirror being positioned so that the element for connection can be observed from outside the module. The mirror can be used as a visual indicator allowing the installer to determine when the elongate electrical component or heating cable is correctly positioned for connection.

Hinged connector for heating cables of various sizes

A test system directed to apparatus for transmitting and receiving multiple telephone transmission signals over a single twisted pair. The system converts an analog signal from a local switching station to an 80 ksymbols/sec signal for transmission over a twisted pair by a line card. A remote terminal converts the 80 ksymbols/sec signal back into a conventional analog signal for use in conventional telephone, facsimile or other related equipment. The test equipment separately tests the entire system, the line card portion of the system, the remote terminal portion of the system, and the twisted pair.
