A low collateral damage, kinetic energy penetrator has multiple segments that are mechanically locked together by centrifugal force generated by penetrator spin. When the penetrator spin decreases below a minimum value, the segments separate and fall to the ground with non-lethal kinetic energy.

A kinetic energy penetrator with a longitudinal axis may include a forward segment having a lateral surface, a rear surface, and at least one air bleed channel extending from the lateral surface to the rear surface. A second segment may be disposed aft of and torsionally engaged with the forward segment. The second segment may include a front surface adjacent the rear surface of the forward segment. The forward and second segments may each be asymmetric about the longitudinal axis of the penetrator. When the penetrator is in flight, bleed air through the bleed channels may impinge on the front surface of the second segment. The second segment may separate from the front segment. Kinetic energies of each of the forward and second segments may be less than about 75 joules upon impact with a ground surface.

A cartridge includes a cartridge case base having a bottom surface, a primer and an annular recess formed in the bottom surface, the annular recess being concentric with the primer; first and second concentric conductive rings disposed in the annular recess, the first and second rings being radially spaced apart and substantially flush with the bottom surface of the cartridge case base, the first and second rings being electrically insulated from the cartridge case base and the primer; a first data pin electrically connected to the first conductive ring and extending into an interior of the cartridge case base; and a second data pin electrically connected to the second conductive ring and extending into the interior of the cartridge case base, the first and second data pins being electrically insulated from the cartridge case base.

A variable drag projectile stabilizer is utilized by a training projectile to match the trajectory of a tactical projectile for up to 3 km while having a range limitation of 8 km. The stabilizer applies supersonic flow phenomena to alter the aerodynamic characteristics of a training projectile while in free flight to fulfill this requirement. The stabilizer uses a cowling supported by struts to provide tail lift and ensure a stable flight path. Supersonic flow is established through ducts formed by the cowling and struts when launched from a weapon. The flow remains supersonic until the projectile reaches the desired range but then quickly becomes subsonic (choked) due to shock waves emanating from interior angles in the ducts. The geometry of the ducts can be designed to create different shock wave patterns within the ducts. The variance of leading edge location, leading edge angle, cowling intake angle, and flight Mach number influences the shock patterns within the ducts and consequently, the range of the projectile.

A fin deployment system for missiles and munitions that deploys and activates straight flat fins for roll control authority. The fin deployment system employs numerous design features, among which are the following: A wrap-around fin concept generates space-savings within a projectile body whereby the fins are arranged in a wrapped configuration around a boomtail structure. The fins may be constructed of a super-elastic material; the system eliminates mechanical means of deploying the wrapped fins, eliminating the need for springs to deploy the fins. The fin deployment achieves substantial space savings for increasing the onboard towing capacity of electronic packaging or lethality in the missiles and munitions systems, while at the same time providing a good roll control authority during flight by enabling a straight fin deployment resulting from the use of super-elastic materials.
