A touch switch apparatus emulating a mechanical switch includes a field effect sensor and an electric field stimulator mechanically associated with the field effect sensor. A field generation signal applied to the field effect sensor causes an electric field to be generated thereabout. The electric field stimulator can be moved between first and second positions with respect to the field effect sensor. When moved into proximity with the field effect sensor, the electric field stimulator disturbs the electric field. A detection circuit coupled to the field effect sensor detects and responds to the disturbance to the electric field.

Touch switches and practical applications therefor

A touch switch apparatus for detecting the presence of an object such as a human appendage, the apparatus having a touch pad, an electric field generated about the touch pad and also having a preferably integrated and local control circuit connected to the touch pad and to a controlled device. Practical applications for touch switch apparatus, including use of touch switch apparatus in connection with other structure to emulate mechanical switches.

In monitor circuitry, a simple circuit separates out the horizontal synchronization pulses from the composite synchronization signal and removes undesired horizontal synchronization pulses during the vertical blanking period. By using a pulse-width modulated signal having the same frequency as the horizontal rate but not necessarily with the same phase, and having at least a 50% duty cycle, the undesired pulses are gated out before being coupled to the horizontal synchronization circuit of the monitor, thus, the monitor system will not attempt to lock at a double frequency, nor cause visible distortion of the raster. The effect of the pulse width modulated signal is inhibited when a user changes the horizontal synchronization frequency and until the monitor achieves lock on the new frequency.

Phase adjustment circuit for controlling horizontal scanning of a scanning video display is provided. Horizontal sync pulses are received having leading edges to be used for determining the occurrence of the horizontal retrace of a scanning electron beam. A manual phase adjustment control is provided by effectively comparing a controllable adjustable delayed leading edge, provided in response to the horizontal sync signal leading edge, with the trailing edge of a retrace pulse, having an effective width W, provided during the retrace cycle of the scanning electron beam. An adjustable monostable circuit delays the horizontal sync signal leading edge by a delay time D1, and this provides one input to a phase locked loop. Another input to the phase locked loop is provided by the trailing edge of the retrace pulse. By phase locking these two inputs, phase adjustment of the occurrence of the retrace pulse is possible so as to implement a phase adjustment .phi. equal to the adjustable delay D1 minus the retrace pulse width W. This permits providing a manually adjustable negative or positive phase delay for the occurrence of the retrace pulse with respect to the horizontal sync signal, and thus enables the present invention to accommodate various different video formats where video may commence either prior to, coincident with or after the occurrence of the horizontal sync signal leading edge.
