A monitoring apparatus and method for measuring light output gradient of a faceplate panel includes a top plate having a center detector and a plurality of corner detectors mounted along a major surface thereof. Lenses are optically coupled to a respective detector, and radiometers are electrically coupled to a respective detector. A bottom plate spaced apart from the top plate has a plurality of light outputs mounted along a major surface thereof and positioned to be opposite each detector. A light source is optically coupled to each light output through a splitter. A computer is electrically coupled to the light source for receiving feedback therefrom and for controlling the light source. The computer is also electrically coupled to each radiometer for recording data therefrom. During monitoring, a faceplate panel having a matrix applied thereto is accurately positioned between the top and bottom plates such that the center detector is located approximately above the center of the faceplate panel. Light is passed from the light sources through the faceplate panel to the detectors under control of the computer. The light output measurements at each detector are recorded by the computer and calculation is made of a light output gradient based upon a comparison of the light output at the center detector to the light output at the corner detector.

Apparatus and method for monitoring of cathode ray tube panel manufacturing to reduce CRT cost and improve performance and yield

A seamless magnetic sheath is mounted on a funnel of a cathode ray tube, behind the deflection windings of a deflection yoke. Various combinations of magnetic poles are formed in the sheath magnetic ferrite material for varying the beam landing location of the screen of a cathode ray tube. The seamless magnetic sheath is formed by an extrusion or a molding fabrication process.

A liner of a deflection yoke is provided with non-threaded sleeves. A slide pin is inserted into the sleeve until a head portion of the pin comes in contact with a funnel of a cathode ray tube on which the yoke is mounted. After adjustment, a wedge is inserted into a hollow part of the pin for expanding radially the wall of the pin. Thereby, the pin is locked within the sleeve. In this way, the position of the yoke relative to the tube is secured.

The novel method for producing a coded marking on a CRT faceplate panel having an exterior and an interior surface with a viewing area surrounded by a periphery and having a luminescent screen with a plurality of different light-emitting phosphors separated by light-absorbing material includes the steps of: depositing a suitable photoresist on the interior surface of the panel to form a layer that extends across the viewing area and onto the periphery; illuminating areas of the photoresist on both the viewing area and the periphery with actinic radiation to selectively change the solubility of the photoresist; developing the photoresist to remove the more soluble areas, thereby exposing underlying portions of the interior surface of the panel while leaving retained areas of less soluble photoresist. The retained areas of the photoresist and the exposed portions of the interior surface of the panel are then overcoated with a light-absorbing material which is dried to form a coating. The light-absorbing coating is developed by removing the retained areas of the photoresist having the overlying light-absorbing coating thereon, while leaving the coating of light-absorbing material adhered to the exposed portions of the interior surface of the panel. The developing step forms openings in the light-absorbing coating on the viewing area and a coded marking, including a pattern of light-absorbing material and open areas, on the periphery of the panel.

A system for measuring the energy transmission through a moving aperture pattern includes a CCD (charge coupled device) sensor having at least one row of pixels arranged perpendicular to the direction of motion. An encoder responds to the motion and provides count pulses. For each count pulse, specific pixels are addressed to establish a plurality of inspection areas for the aperture pattern through which energy transmission is measured. The transmission is averaged for all the inspection areas to determine the acceptability of the aperture pattern.
