A method for packet signalling between a base station with a variable antenna system and remote stations uses pilot tones sent by the remote stations to the base station at the start of each data transfer period in which signalling will occur in either direction. The base station uses the pilot tone to configure the directional antenna for communication with the remote station during that data transfer period. The pilot tone signals are initiated by polling signals and polling acknowledgment signals.

Media access protocol for packet access within a radio cell

Distributed call setup and rerouting are realized in a mobile-communications network. A connection tree is set up within the network, e.g., upon a mobile user accessing a base station. The connection tree comprises communication routes from a fixed point in the network, the root of the tree, to each base station within a vicinity of the base station accessed by the mobile user. When the mobile user moves from one cell to another within the connection tree, the call is rerouted to another route within the connection tree.

In packet based communications, e.g., in cellular or mobile communications, information is formatted as transmission frames. The transmission frames have equal length or duration, and they have a common format. Each transmission frame includes a frame marker field, a signaling field and a communication field. The frame marker field delimits the transmission frame, the signaling field includes communications system information, and the communication field includes information for communication between a user and a base station.

Techniques for making a recursive mesh network for connecting a varying number of access stations within a service area is disclosed. The techniques include (a) dividing the service area into M.times.N rectangular regions, having (M+1).times.(N+1) corners, which cover the entire range of the service area; (b) placing an access station at an available region corner whenever a new access station becomes available, and connecting the access station to its corresponding optical connection paths, until (M+1).times.(N+1) access stations have been so connected; (c) determining, for each additional new access station, which region the additional new access station falls within; (d) if this determined region has not been divided, dividing the determined region into S.times.T sub-regions; (e) if the divided determined region has less than (S+1).times.(T+1) access stations within it, placing the additional new access station at an available sub-region corner in the region and connecting the new additional access station to at least one other access station within the same region; and (f) if the divided determined region has (S+1).times.(T+1) access stations within it, repeating steps (c)-(f) with respect to that sub-region until the new additional access station can be connected. In a mobile communications network, cell-clusters are defined to include a multiplicity of cells. Wireless connections within the network are classified based on the actions taken for the connections when a radio congestion state is encountered. A cell-cluster controller controls admission of new calls to the cell-cluster, and admits or rejects the calls based on (1) number of existing calls of each class in the cell-cluster, (2) traffic characteristics including call holding time and a hand-off rate of each class, (3) quality-of-service (QOS) requirements of each class, and (4) policy for scheduling or sharing different call classes at each base station of the cell-cluster.

System and method for connection control in mobile communications

An optical pulse packet at electronic data rates is time-compressed in a recirculating optical delay line to produce a compressed optical packet which, after transmission over a high speed optical network, is expanded at optical data rates by use of the inverse of the compression process. The system employs two recirculating optical loops per network node, one for optically compressing a fully formatted electronic packet for transmission onto the network and one for electronically expanding such a packet upon reception.
