There is provided a client device arranged to receive a live adaptive bitrate stream, the client device further arranged to: request a manifest file; and request a manifest update hint. The client device further arranged to receive a manifest update hint, the manifest update hint including an indication of when the manifest will be updated; and request an updated manifest file at a time indicated by the manifest update hint.

Media content comprises video. The video comprises a sequence of scenes comprising pictures. The media content comprises segments. A method determines when a scene change between a first scene and a second, subsequent, scene occurs within a predetermined proximity to a boundary between segments. When a scene change occurs within a predetermined proximity of an end of a segment, at least a first picture in the second scene is discarded and an additional picture is inserted in the first scene. When a scene change occurs within a predetermined proximity of a start of a segment, at least one picture in the first scene is discarded and an additional picture is inserted in the second scene. The additional picture can be a repeat or a copy of an existing picture, or it can be based on at least one existing picture in the first scene, such as by interpolation.

Processing media content with scene changes

A method in an encoder, the method comprising: receiving a video; encoding a segment of the video at different bit rates to generate multiple representations of the segment at different bit rates; generating a quality metric for each representation of the video segment; and storing the lowest bit rate representation of the video segment for which the respective quality metric meets a predefined minimum quality threshold.

A system and method for mitigating motion artifacts in a media streaming network, wherein a scheme for facilitating adaptive post-decode (PD) filtering at a client device is provided. Extraction of still area grid information is effectuated at a source media processing node. Each of the media content representations (A,B) has a different bit rate. Each of the media content service representations (A,B) is divided into segments (A,B). Segments (A,B) of the plurality of media content service representations are aligned in time. The segments are transmitted as a sequence of bursts (A,B). The bursts of the plurality of media content service representations are aligned in time. There is a window period () between successive bursts during which media content is not transmitted. Each of the media content service representations is transmitted as a multicast. Each of the generated media content service representations (A,B) has a respective bit rate and each of the segments (A,B) is transmitted at a higher bit rate to create the window periods () between successive bursts (A,B).

Method and apparatus for distributing a media content service

There is provided a method of statistically multiplexing a plurality of input video data streams into at least one output data stream having a pre-determined capacity, comprising providing a plurality of bit rate estimates at different quality levels for each input video data stream using a look-ahead encoder, summing together the bit rate estimates of the same quality level for all input video data streams, determining the picture quality of each input video data stream at which the summed bit rate estimates is equal to or less than the output data stream pre-determined capacity.
