The present invention teaches a system and method for improved signal recovery for range and coverage extension in a heterogeneous cooperative network of digital chaos transmissions with OFDM component signal transmission. The invention improves upon the state of art in side channel information from the transmit side containing information on the clipped amplitude. In-band transmission of the side information is achieved by exploiting the sparsity of the resulting clip amplitude position with improved levels of compression over the prior art using Gabor Transform Multiple Symbol Encoding transmitter. The information rate of the clipped amplitude is sub-Nyquist relative to the original OFDM component signal transmission, which allows very low power spreading by a cooperative digital chaos sequences at a transmit side and recovery of the clipped amplitude at a receive side. Further, an improved noise resistance side channel performance is achieved by decoding Gabor Transform symbols for symbol recovery.

Method and apparatus for range and coverage extension in a heterogeneous digital chaos cooperative network

Concepts, systems and methods are provided herein for generating encoded binomial pulse position modulation (BPPM) signals having random, sparse sets of multiple pulses per channel usage interval for use in Free-Space Optical (FSO) communications. A data symbol can be modulated into a set of BPPM pulses for transmission over a FSO channel and a signal can be generated having the set of BPPM pulses over a predetermined time interval. The BPPM pulses can be encoded into one or more codewords based on a number of error correction bits to form a coded signal using the one or more codewords to represent the signal having the set of pulses for transmission over the free-space optical channel. The coded signal can be filtered and sampled to generate a set of samples. Position and amplitude data for the samples can be determined to reconstruct and decode the coded signal.

Binomial pulse-position modulation (BPPM) using sparse recovery for free-space optical fading/turbulent channels

A prospective relay station sends a report indicative of radio resource sets/preamble sequences used by its neighbors. Where the reported radio resource sets comprise less than all available radio resource sets, a radio resource set that is not indicated in the report is assigned; else where the reported radio resource sets comprise all available radio resource sets, a resource set indicated in the report is assigned. A message is sent to the prospective relay station indicates the assigned radio resource set and an identifier for use as an enabled relay station. The message may include signal strength and IDs. Apparatus, methods and computer programs are detailed for both a base station and the relay node. Radio resource set re-assignment, managed mode relay operations (where the base station schedules traffic among relays using the same radio resource set), and power control of relays and associated mobile stations are also described.

A method of modeling channel parameters in Doppler environments estimates both the channel model and the coefficients simultaneously, thus not requiring additional packet overhead. This adaptive technique refines the channel coefficients as the estimate of the model accuracy improves with channel measurements. The underlying models are very accurate representations of Jakes models because they are computed off-line, thus the error prone approaches of trying to estimate one model from the observations are avoided.

Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating frequency offset estimation between communication stations operable in a communication system. A likelihood polynomial is calculated and provided to a filter. The filter forms a filtered representation of the likelihood polynomial, and the filtered representations are down-sampled by a decimator. A sampled, filtered representation of the likelihood polynomial is thereby obtained. The filtered, sampled representation is applied to a root calculator that calculates the roots of the polynomial, thereafter, to be used to compensate for the frequency offset.

A jamming suppression system which includes a plurality of receivers for receiving electromagnetic radiations and a separate notch filter coupled to each receiver for filtering selected frequencies from electromagnetic radiations received by each of the receivers. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a spatial combiner responsive to the outputs of each of the notch filters extracts essentially jam-free information from the electromagnetic radiations. In accordance with a second embodiment of the invention, a plurality of spatial combiners, each responsive to the outputs of each of the notch filters, extracts essentially jam-free information from the electromagnetic radiations. The notch filters are adaptive notch filters for on-line selection of their filtering action. One of the notch filters is a master filter and the remainder of the notch filters are slave filters controlled by the master filter. In both embodiments, spatial filtering action is accomplished using a generalized sidelobe canceler that permits gain (relative to an isotropic antenna) to be preserved in the direction of one or more satellites while casting spatial mulls in the directions of inadvertent friendly or hostile jamming signals.

A method and system are provided for indicating a change between a first image and a second image. In a first aspect, a sequence of images is sensed (304, 310) including the first and second image. The first image is previous in the sequence to the second image. Each image previous in the sequence to the second image is processed generating a first processed image (312). The first processed image and the second image are then processed generating a second processed image (316, 312). The first processed image and the second processed image are then processed generating an optical flow field (314). The optical flow field shows the change between the first image and the second image. In a second aspect, a first sequence of images including the first image is sensed (206). A second sequence of images including the second image is sensed (206). The first sequence is processed generating a first processed image (210). The second sequence is also processed generating a second processed image (208). The first processed image and the second processed image are then processed generating an optical flow field (216). This optical flow field also indicates the change between the first image and the second image.
