A structure or cooling a large cylindrical storage tank has the shape of an inverted funnel and is intended to be disposed over the tank receiving the upper portion therein and internal struts are provided to separate the funnel wall from the tank wall, The separation allows the entry of air into the funnel structure so that as the structure is heated by the sun air currents will rise through the funnel exiting the chimney which will result in an inflow of air into the funnel around the walls of the tank.

Ventilated tank pagoda

A method is described for reducing drag in airframes or airfoils. The method includes inducing cavitation in the boundary layer separating the airframe or foil skin and the air currents passing thereover to produce a reduced pressure area instead of turbulent flow. In one embodiment of this invention, a nose cone is provided for the airframe which at the juncture of its base portion provides a step between the terminal portion of the nose cone and the adjacent portion of the fuselage skin. This provides a circumferential step surrounding the fuselage which in its leeward direction induces the cavitation necessary to reduce drag. In another embodiment of this invention, steps can be provided longitudinally at mutually spaced circumferential locations extending from the front along the fuselage toward to the rear to ensure that a continuous boundary layer is provided of reduced pressure. In a third embodiment of this invention, the stepped areas are provided on the upper surface of an airfoil to extend lengthwise rather than circumferentially and provide the reduced pressure area along the upper surface to enhance lift as well as reduce drag.

Supercavitating airframe

An accelerator for a windmill structure as described which is a frustro-conical funnel-like device intended to direct a stream of wind therethrough onto the impeller of a windmill. As the wind passes through the device, it is constricted whereby the velocity increases and exits a throat-like outlet as a diverging jet impacting the impeller blades to thereby increase the kinetic energy available to be converted to mechanical or electrical energy by said windmill. The device of this invention can include a vane for maintaining the accelerator facing into the wind with the windmill, a mounting platform for either the accelerator or both accelerator and the windmill, and an internal configuration to said accelerator to impart a swirling spiral motion to the wind passing therethrough as it is constricted.

Windmill accelerator

A ventilated boot or shoe is described wherein the boot or shoe is of conventional design having a sole, an upper portion, a toe, a heel, and instep portion, and sides forming an open top. Within the shoe, a spongy open-celled compressible insole is provided which has a pair of channels at each side entering the insole at the instep and at the heel portions. An impervious layer is sandwiched between upper and lower layers of spongy material to form said insole and an impervious material further forms the sides thereof. Ventilation pipes are provided which extend downwardly from the open top of the boot or shoe along the sides thereof and which form elbows at the lower end which enter the channels. As the wearer walks, the insole is compressed expelling air trapped in the open cells thereof and as pressure on the insole eases, the resilient insole expands drawing air through the ventilation tubes thereinto. In this way, outside air is exchanged via the insole to ventilate the interior of the boot and expel inside air through the open top.

An underwater maneuverable vehicle is presented which carries an explosive charge and can be used for immediate removal or destruction of various menaces to navigation and other underwater hazards. The battery powered vehicle is air dropped from a platform which carries an imaging lidar system for detection and is operated and navigationally controlled in conjunction with an imaging lidar system.
