An application server running an SNA application includes a TN3270 server. Performance of the application server is enhanced by relocating away from the application server the conversion of data between ASCII and EBCDIC, as well as command scanning and packaging. The relocating can take the form of, for example, a browser plug-in at the client or elsewhere. In addition, the client is able to carry on communications with the application server over a standard port by logically situating a communication server between the client and the application server. The client communicates with the communication server over the standard port, while the communication server forwards the communications to the application server over a non-standard port.

A method of transferring data in a network computing environment having a controlling program and a main storage in processing communication with an interface element including one or more adapters. A queuing mechanism is first established in the main storage for asynchronous transmittal of data between the program and said interface element. At least one queue-set is dedicated to input data and another queue-set to output data in the queuing mechanism. Queuing priorities both for said input and output queue-sets are then determined according to importance of data to be processed or transferred or other internal dependencies and a queue-description record is established by passing a QDIO queue command. From this the priority and number of the output queue are provided by order in which the order specified in the queue descriptor record relative to any other output queues described in that record. Data is then transferred and received according to the queuing priority by interrogating multiple queues in the mechanism simultaneously and determining appropriate location to which data has to be stored to or transferred from.

A method of providing direct data processing access in a network computing system environment. The system environment has a main storage which can be connected to one or more application servers and is in processing communication with an interface element. The interface element has at least one adapter and can be connected to one or more application user(s). One or more queues are established in the main storage that can handle data without causing interrupts in the running programs. Incoming data is received using the adapter and as data is received or modified, the status of the network computing system will be updated to reflect the new data or change. Data is then processed in the main storage after interrogating the multiple existing queues in the main storage and forwarding them in turn to their appropriate destination or application server after a determination has been made by interrogating these queues.

A method and an apparatus for timely and accurate processing of data in a network computing environment controlled by a running program and having a queuing mechanism established in a main storage. The main storage is in processing communication with an interface element having one or more adapters. At least one set of queues in the queuing mechanism is designated for input and another set for output. A signal adapter instruction can be issued to provide initiative to check content of any or all queues in the mechanism. With the help of the signal adapter an initiate-output can be specified when appropriate and the associated adapter can then asynchronously process the input or the output queues. A synchronize option is also available to signal the associated data queues to update all entries in order to render them current as observed by both the adapter and the controlling running program.

Method and apparatus for ensuring accurate and timely processing of data using a queued direct input-output device

A queuing method and apparatus for transfer or incoming and outgoing data in a network environment having a main storage is presented. A plurality of queue sets are provided in the main storage with at least one or more sets being dedicated for input and output. The queues can share access to a plurality of devices in the network across a plurality of communication stacks. Various network resources are mapped to the queues in order to facilitate resource allocation and dynamic configuration by providing initialization of a plurality of configuration parameters. In this way dynamic expanding and contracting of the number of queues in each set as dictated by traffic patterns and feedback indicators is provided.

Queuing method and apparatus for providing direct data processing access using a queued direct input-output device

In a computing network system environment having a gateway device that is electronically connected from one side to a plurality of initiating hosts and on another side to at least one local area network, in turn connecting a plurality of hosts are connected to the gateway device, a method and apparatus for eliminating any need for building a separate and special protocol data unit element for each header. The computer network environment uses a Multi-path channel communication protocol as well as protocol data units to point to various portions of data. An interface layer is provided between a plurality of protocol stacks and the multi-path channel protocol. The interface layer has a timer which will wait for data from the protocol stack. A list of all buffers are assembled as received comprising of one entry for each data buffer. This buffer list is then transferred to the multi-path channel protocol layer upon expiration of the timer, which is in turn sent to any channel attached processor as one block. A deblocker interface is also provided on all channel attached processors so that any length fields provided in the protocol headers can be used to determine offset of next data element in said block and thus eliminating need for a special header at next data element used by the communication protocol.

Blocking IP datagrams in a multi-path channel point-to-point environment

In a mainframe class data processing system having multiple partitions and a port to a network, a table is established. The table defines communications paths between the port to the network and at least two partitions of the multiple partitions. More specifically, each partition has at least one application executing therewithin and the communications paths are defined thereto. Data frames are passed between the network and the applications within the partitions through the port to the network and along the communications paths defined in the table such that network communications is effected.

Methods and system for network communications of multiple partitions

Methods and apparatus are described, in the context of an information handling system, that permit data chaining in a data streaming mode to be performed through a channel extender. The information handling system includes a processor channel and a peripheral device controller which communicate with one another over the channel extender. The invention allows the separation between the processor channel and peripheral device controller to be extended up to several (e.g. 1, 2 or 3) kilometers versus the less than 0.5 kilometer separation imposed by state of the art systems. Furthermore, the invention allows the objective of increased channel extender length to be accomplished without the risk of data overruns, chaining checks or peripheral device controller signalled errors which would otherwise occur as a result of requests for data or data transfers being in flight on an extended link.
