The present invention provides a curved honeycomb article having a first face, a second face, and a plurality of channels formed from the first face to the second face, each channel having a channel axis, the curved honeycomb article having a width of at least about 15 cm in at least one direction in the plane normal to a channel axis at its geometrical center, each channel having a virtual channel extension associated therewith, the virtual channel extensions defining a convergence area substantially smaller than the occluded area of the curved honeycomb article. Methods for making the curved honeycomb article and apparati using the curved honeycomb article are also disclosed.

Monolithic metallic catalyst substrates offering improved heat conductivity are provided from metal powder extrusion batches of copper, tin, zinc, aluminum, iron, silver, nickel, and mixtures and alloys thereof by extrusion through a honeycomb extrusion die followed by drying and firing in a two stage firing process to oxidize organic extrusion batch components, remove residual oxides from the porous wall structure, and consolidate the metal powders to strong, integral honeycomb support structures.

Beta-spodumene bodies and method of preparing the bodies that involves providing a uniform plastic batch of inorganic raw materials, organic binder, and vehicle, wherein the inorganic raw materials are composed of, in percent by weight, about 75% to 95% minerals, and about 5% to 25% glass. The batch is formed into a green body that is fired to produce a body composed substantially of beta-spodumene, and having a thermal expansion coefficient of &lt;10.times.10.sup.-7 /.degree.C.(0-800.degree. C.), and a strength of .gtoreq.4 Ksi.

Method of producing .beta.-spodumene bodies

A method of producing a glass-plastic, laminated, ophthalmic lens structure in a continuous operation. A thin, flexible, plastic adhesive layer is applied to a glass element to form a composite body that is inserted in a cylindrical gasket in such manner as to fit snugly and be sealed from the ambient. A monomeric formulation is flowed onto the adhesive layer and cured to form a laminated lens blank.

Ophthalmic lens method

An ophthalmic lens embodying an organic plastic lens member having a refractive index of at least 1.56 and being the cured product of a monomeric formulation. The formulation contains a resin monomer base, a curing agent selected from aromatic anhydrides, aromatic diamines, thioamides and thioamines, and a refractive index enhancing additive selected from alkyl or aromatic diols or thiols and transition metal alkoxides. The organic plastic lens member may be an integral, monofocal lens, or a segment embedded in a cavity in the front, convex surface of an organic plastic, major lens member having a lesser refractive index. The latter may have a thin, inorganic glass lens member adhered to its front, convex surface to produce a glass-plastic, laminated, multifocal lens structure.

High-index, organic lens member

An improvement in the epoxy plastic element of a laminated, glass-plastic, ophthalmic lens structure, and a method of effecting the improvement, are disclosed. The improved element is cast from a casting mix in which the ingredients are maintained in certain relationships to each other to provide an optically clear casting essentially free of striations. The cast material is gelled at a low temperature not over about 100.degree. C., and may then be cured at a temperature up to 200.degree. for a period of at least two hours.

Composite ophthalmic lens

There are disclosed synthetic mica papers, substrates produced by laminating such papers, and use of the substrates in printed circuit assemblies. The mica paper is composed primarily of overlapping, ion-exchanged platelets of a synthetic, lithium and/or sodium, water-swelling mica, and is impregnated with an organic resin.

A composite material is disclosed which is composed essentially of an ion-exchanged, synthetic, crystalline mica and an organic resin, the mica constituting at least about 50% by weight of the composite, and the mechanical properties of the composite being superior to those of the mica pressed alone.

The present invention is directed to the production of essentially dry alkali metal (R.sup.1) aluminofluorophosphate glasses optionally containing at least one divalent metal (R.sup.2) which exhibits a transition temperature below about 350.degree. C., good chemical durability, resistance to weathering, and glass stability, and which demonstrate the capability of being molded at temperatures below 400.degree. C. into complex shapes. The alkali metal aluminofluorophosphate glasses consist essentially, as analyzed on an atomic basis, between about R.sup.1 AlP.sub.2 F.sub.2 O.sub.6 and R.sup.1 .sub.3.75 AlP.sub.3 F.sub.4 O.sub.9 with the requirement that the components comply with the following atomic ratios:

Moldable fluoroaluminophosphate glasses

The present invention is founded upon the fundamental discovery that anhydrous silicate materials can be formed into solid bodies which are hydrated or wherein the silicate structure is depolymerized by protonic reagents other than water. Such bodies can be produced by compression molding the anhydrous silicate material with water or other protonic reagent at elevated temperatures and high pressures.

Molding hydrosilicate materials

This invention relates to the coprocessing of hydrated glass with organic polymers to form integral bodies which can be stronger, tougher, and more durable than the original hydrated glass and stiffer than the original plastic material. The process is amenable to any hydrated glass so long as the processing temperature of the hydrated glass is below the temperature at which decomposition of the organic polymer takes place. Chemical bonding between the hydrated glass and a thermosetting organic polymer is achieved through the use of silane coupling agents. Such are not necessary with thermoplastic polymers. The invention is applicable with both thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers which are resistant to alkali environments.
