A polymeric film structure having improved oxygen, flavor/odor, grease/oil and moisture barrier characteristics is disclosed. The structure includes a polymeric substrate adapted to receive an oxygen barrier on one side thereof and a moisture barrier on the other side of the oxygen barrier. The oxygen barrier includes polyvinyl alcohol cross-linked with aldehyde containing cross-linking agents in the presence of a catalytic amount of sulfuric acid. The moisture barrier can be provided by the carrier web or incorporated into the cellulosic material, which is preferably box board.

Cellulose material containing barrier film structures

A film combination has a pair of polymeric substrate films. At least one surface of each has a surface free energy of at least 35 dynes/cm and a primer coating on each. Each primer coating has a layer of poly(vinylalcohol) containing a cross-linking means. Each film of the pair is positioned with the poly(vinylalcohol) layers in intimate contacting relationship before any substantial cross-linking occurs.

The present invention is a method of producing low oxygen-transmissive films having PVOH coatings through the utilization of a PVOH solution which includes at least two PVOH resins having differing degrees of hydrolysis. The present invention is also a low oxygen-transmissive film manufactured by this method.

Method of producing PVOH coatings with enhanced properties

A multilayer heat sealable film comprises: (a) a polyolefin film substrate layer; (b) a layer of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH), and (c) a heat sealable acrylic polymeric coating applied to (b). A metallized film combination comprising an oriented polypropylene substrate layer, at least one surface of which having a coating of a vinyl alcohol homopolymer or copolymer hydrolyzed to at least 95% at a pH of greater than 5.0, said coating having a metal layer thereon. The high pH PVOH hydrolysis conditions provide a metallized product of high metal adhesion and good water and oxygen barrier properties.

Metallized composite film structure and method

A polymeric film structure having improved oxygen, flavor/odor, grease/oil and moisture barrier characteristics is disclosed. The structure includes a polymeric core sandwiched between an oxygen barrier on one side thereof and a moisture barrier on the other side of the polymeric core. The oxygen barrier includes polyvinyl alcohol cross-linked with aldehyde containing cross-linking agents in the presence of a catalytic amount of an inorganic acid, preferably sulfuric acid. The moisture barrier is a coating of polyvinylidene chloride, which also enhances the oxygen barrier of the polymeric film structure.

Oxygen, flavor/odor, grease/oil and moisture barrier film structures

Coating compositions which have improved oxygen and flavor/odor barrier characteristics are disclosed. The coating compositions are obtained by coating a polymeric substrate with an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol and urea and drying the coating at a temperature sufficient to allow the polyvinyl alcohol and urea to crosslink such that urethane linkages are formed at least between the polymeric substrate and the coating composition. Polymeric film structures including coating compositions and a method of making the same are also disclosed.

A polymeric film structure having improved oxygen and moisture barrier characteristics is disclosed. The structure includes a polymeric substrate adapted to receive an oxygen barrier on one side thereof and a moisture barrier on the other side of the oxygen barrier. The oxygen barrier includes polyvinyl alcohol cross-linked with aldehyde containing cross-linking agents in the presence of a catalytic amount of an inorganic acid, preferably sulfuric acid. The moisture barrier is a metallized polymeric composite, preferably metallized oriented polypropylene.

A transparent polymeric film that provides a barrier to the transmission of ultra-violet light. The film results from the addition of titanium dioxide particles having an average particle size less than the wavelength of visible light, yet greater than the wavelength of ultra-violet light, to a polymeric material capable of being formed as a transparent film.
