An infrared detector includes a radiation source configured to emit electromagnetic radiation. The detector includes a source monitoring apparatus configured to generate output signals () related to electrical resistance through the radiation source. The output signals are used to account for radiation source temperature in measurements by the detector. The output signals may be used () in the provision of power to the radiation source to maintain the temperature of the detector at a beneficial level. The detector is configured to monitor a level of a gaseous molecular species within a flow of breathable gas.

Apparatus and method for controlling radiation source variability for optical gas measurement systems

A gas measurement detector includes first and second sources emitting mid- and near-infrared electromagnetic radiation respectively; source optics combining mid- and near-infrared electromagnetic radiation emitted by the first and second sources into a coaxial beam directed across a flow path of a flow of breathable gas; sensor optics dividing electromagnetic radiation in the coaxial beam that has traversed the flow path into first radiation that includes mid-infrared electromagnetic radiation and second radiation that includes near-infrared electromagnetic radiation; first and second radiation sensors generating output signals conveying information related to a parameter of the mid-infrared electromagnetic radiation in the first radiation and a parameter of the near-infrared electromagnetic radiation in the second radiation, respectively; and a processor determining a level of a gaseous molecular species based on the output signals with the output signals generated by the second radiation sensor compensating optical loss through the flow path.

A mainstream gas monitoring system and method that includes using a mainstream airway adapter and a gas sensing assembly associated with the airway adapter to measure an analyte of a gas flow through the adapter. A gas sensing portion outputs a signal indicative of the analyte in a gas flow in the mainstream airway adapter. A processing portion receives the signal from the gas sensing portion and determines an amount of the analyte in the gas flow based on the signal from the gas sensing portion. The processing portion determines whether the oxygen measurements are of sufficient quality for their intended use, such as for measuring oxygen consumption or metabolic estimations. Quality measurements may be used to improve accuracy of derived metabolic estimations. Methods are provided by which carbon dioxide measurements can be processed and substituted for direct oxygen measurement for all or part of a respiratory cycle.

A sidestream sampling system includes a sidestream gas measurement assembly and a sample cell configured to be assembled therewith. The sidestream gas measurement assembly includes a receptacle for removably receiving at least a portion of the sample cell. The sample cell is coupled to a sampling tube that is configured to communicate with an airway of an individual. The gas sensing portion is subject to temperature variations associated with variations in flow rate and direction of respiratory gases. Methods are described that utilize the measurement of instantaneous respiratory flow rate combined with estimates of gas temperature and composition to estimate the sensor cooling effects from which a flow based time varying compensation factor is derived.

The present invention also pertains to a sidestream gas measurement system that output signals emulating the signals output by a mainstream gas measurement system or portion thereof, so that the sidestream gas measurement system can seamlessly communicate with a host system configured to communicate with a mainstream gas measurement system or a portion thereof.

A sidestream gas sampling system that includes a conduit that communicates a flow of gas to a gas measurement site. A gas measurement assembly measures a constituent of the flow of gas at the gas measurement site. A capillary tube communicates the flow of gas from the gas measurement site. A differential pressure transducer in fluid communication with first and second portions of the capillary tube measure a pressure differential between these two portions. A controller is coupled to the differential pressure transducer to measure the flow of gas based on the output of the differential pressure transducer and to control the flow of gas via a flow generator coupled to the gas flow path.

A gas measurement system of this invention includes a detector assembly having a beamsplitter adapted to separate infrared radiation into a first beam and a second beam and a mirror adapted to receive the first beam from the beamsplitter. The first and second beams are directed to first and second detectors that are disposed in a common plane. In one embodiment, the optical elements are provided on or in an optical block. In another embodiment, the gas measurement system includes a housing that contains an infrared absorption gas measurement assembly, a luminescence quenching gas measurement assembly, and a processor that is programmed to measure gas constituents of a gas flow based on an output of the infrared absorption gas measurement assembly and the luminescence quenching gas measurement assembly.

Gas measurement system

A method of modulating an infrared radiation (IR) source that includes applying a time-varying, periodic voltage signal to the IR source, measuring a parameter of the voltage signal, and adjusting the voltage signal to maintain a substantially constant delivered power to the IR source. Adjusting the voltage signal is done based on the measured parameter and a predetermined relationship between the measured parameter of the voltage pulse and a resistance of such an infrared radiation source. Alternatively, the method includes applying a the voltage pulse, measuring a first parameter of the voltage pulse and a second parameter of a current passing through the infrared radiation source resulting from the applying step, and adjusting the voltage pulse to maintain a substantially constant delivered power to the infrared radiation source based on the first parameter and the second parameter.
