An infrared radiation-sensitive positive-working imageable element has a substrate and single imageable layer that includes a first polymeric binder having urethane or urea moieties in its backbone. The first polymeric binder is also insoluble in water and soluble in a weakly alkaline solution. This imageable element can be imaged and processed using weakly alkaline processing solutions that are free of silicates and metasilicates, which processing solutions may also be used to 'gum' the imaged and developed printing surface.

Positive-working imageable elements and method of use

A multi-layer, positive-working lithographic printing plate precursor can be imaged with infrared radiation and processed in a single step using a single processing solution that has a pH greater than 6 and up to about 11. This single processing solution both develops the imaged precursor and provides a protective coating that need not be rinsed off before lithographic printing.

Method of making lithographic printing plates

Positive-working imageable elements can be used to prepare lithographic printing plates. These elements have at least two layers (inner and outer) arranged on a suitable substrate. The inner layer that is closer to the substrate includes one or more polymeric binders that include pendant oxazoline groups and acid groups that are reactive with the oxazoline groups during a post-baking step after development. The resulting imageable elements are more quickly baked in this manner to provide improved run length and resistant to press chemicals.

Multilayer positive-working imageable elements and their use

Thermally imageable multilayer imageable elements useful as lithographic printing plate precursors that have good solvent resistance are disclosed. The underlayer of the imageable element comprises an acidic copolymer that comprises, in polymerized form, about 10 mol % to about 75 mol % of one or more monomers of the formula:CH&#x2550;CH(R)-Z-X&#x2014;NH&#x2014;CO&#x2014;NH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;(R)(COH);in which: Ris H or CH; Ris H or OH; Z is &#x2014;CH&#x2014; or &#x2014;C(O) &#x2014;Y&#x2014;; Y is &#x2014;O&#x2014; or &#x2014;NH&#x2014;; and X is selected from &#x2014;C(CH)&#x2014;, &#x2014;CH(CH)&#x2014; and &#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;, in which n is an integer from 1 to 12.

Bakeable multi-layer imageable element

A positive-working imageable element comprises inner and outer layers and a radiation absorbing compound such as an IR absorbing dye. The inner layer includes a first polymeric material. The ink receptive outer layer includes a second polymeric binder comprising a polymer backbone and an &#x2014;X&#x2014;C(&#x2550;T)&#x2014;NR&#x2014;S(&#x2550;O)&#x2014; moiety that is attached to the polymer backbone, wherein &#x2014;X&#x2014; is an oxy or &#x2014;NR'&#x2014; group, T is O or S, R and R&#x2032; are independently hydrogen, halo, or an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms. After thermal imaging, the element can be developed using an alkaline developer. Use of the particular second polymeric binder reduces sludging in the developer. Its dissolution rate in the developer is slow enough to resist developer attack in the non-imaged areas of the outer layer but rapid enough for the second polymeric binder to be quickly loosened from imaged areas and kept suspended or dissolved for a considerable time.

Single-layer and multilayer imageable elements have a substrate and at least one imageable layer and can be used to prepare positive-working lithographic printing plates. The imageable elements also include a radiation absorbing compound and a solvent-resistant polymer binder comprising an &#x2014;N(R)&#x2014;C(&#x2550;X)&#x2014;N(R')&#x2014;S(&#x2550;O)&#x2014; moiety that is attached to the polymer backbone, wherein X is O or S, R and R&#x2032; are independently hydrogen, halo, or an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms. This solvent-resistant polymer binder is located in the imageable layer closest to the substrate and provides improved chemical resistance.

Imageable members with improved chemical resistance

Multilayer, positive working, thermally imageable, bakeable imageable elements have a substrate, an underlayer, and a top layer. The underlayer comprises a polymeric material that comprises, in polymerized form from about 5 mol % to about 30 mol % of recurring units derived from an ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomer having a carboxy group; from about 20 mol % to about 75 mol % of recurring units derived from N-phenylmaleimide, N-cyclohexylmaleimide, N-benzylmaleimide, or a mixture thereof; and from about 3 mol % to about 50 mol % of recurring units derived from a compound represented by the formula:CH&#x2550;C(R)&#x2014;C(O)&#x2014;NH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;OR,in which Ris Cto Calkyl, phenyl, Cto Csubstituted phenyl, Cto Caralkyl, or Si(CH); and Ris hydrogen or methyl. Other materials, such as a resin or resins having activated methylol and/or activated alkylated methylol groups, such as a resole resin, may be present in the underlayer. The elements can be used to produce bakeable lithographic printing plates that are resistant to press chemistries.

Multilayer imageable elements

A positive-working imageable element comprises inner and outer layers and an infrared radiation absorbing compound such as an IR absorbing dye. The inner layer includes a first polymeric material. The ink receptive outer layer includes a second polymeric binder comprising pendant carboxy groups that provides improved chemical resistance to the imageable element and reduced residue from development.

The present invention provides an imageable element including a substrate, a first layer applied to the substrate and a second layer applied to the first layer. The first layer may contain polymeric material and a radiation absorbing compound. The second layer may contain a hydroxyl group-containing polymer that includes a heat-labile moiety.

Thermally sensitive imageable element

A positive-working imageable element comprises inner and outer layers and a radiation absorbing compound such as an IR absorbing dye. The inner layer includes a polymeric material that is removable using an alkaline developer. An ink receptive outer layer is not removable using an alkaline developer before its exposure to imaging radiation. The outer layer includes a polymer binder having pendant epoxy groups that are substantially unreacted during exposure.

The present invention provides a patterned substrate and methods of forming patterns on a substrate, in which a thermally sensitive composition composed of an inorganic nanopaste is applied onto a surface of a substrate to form a layer. The layer may be imaged and developed to form a pattern area that adheres to the surface of the substrate. The patterned substrate may be used in the production of printing plates and masks.

Nanopastes for use as patterning compositions

The present invention provides a method of forming an image on a printing plate, in which a nanopaste is imagewise ink-jet applied onto a surface of a substrate. The layer is then treated to form an image area. The method is useful in the formation of printing plates and radiation opaque masks.

Nanopastes as ink-jet compositions for printing plates

Alkali soluble copolymers, imageable elements useful as lithographic printing plate precursors that contain the alkali soluble copolymers, and methods for forming images using the imageable elements are disclosed. The alkali soluble copolymers comprise, in polymerized form: (a) N-phenylmaleimide, N-cyclohexylmaleimide, N-benzylmaleimide, or a mixture thereof; (b) acrylamide, methacrylamide, or a mixture thereof; (c) acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, or a mixture thereof; and (d) one or more monomers selected from the group consisting of monomers of the structure: CH&#x2550;C(R)-Z-X&#x2014;NHC(O)NH&#x2014;Y&#x2014;R', in which: X is &#x2014;[C(CH)]&#x2014; or &#x2014;[(CH)]&#x2014;, in which n is 0 to 12; Y is o-, m-, or p- &#x2014;[CH]&#x2014;; Z is &#x2014;[C(O)O]&#x2014;, &#x2014;[C(O)NH]&#x2014;, or o-, m-, or p- [&#x2014;CH]&#x2014;; R is hydrogen or Cto Calkyl; R&#x2032; is &#x2014;OC(O)&#x2014;OR&#x2033;, &#x2014;OC(O)&#x2014;Ar, or &#x2014;OSO&#x2014;Ar; R&#x2033; is Cto Calkyl, Cto Carylalkyl, Cto Caryl, Cto Calkenyl, or trimethylsilyl; Ar is CHT, in which Ar has a total of six to ten carbon atoms; each T is independently selected from the group consisting of Cto Calkyl, fluoro, chloro, bromo, iodo, trifluoromethyl, methoxy, and cyano; and n&#x2032; is an integer from 0 to 5; and in which the copolymer is soluble in alkaline solutions having a pH greater than at least about 11.

Positive-working, thermally sensitive imageable element

The present invention provides a positive-working, thermally imageable element generally comprising a multi-layered imageable coating. The invention provides an imageable element comprising a substrate, an ink-receptive top layer, and an underlayer, the underlayer including a specific copolymer described herein. The copolymer can be a polymer comprising constitutional units derived from: a) a monomer having a cyclic urea group; b) a monomer comprising an N-substituted maleimide; c) a (meth)acrylamide or (meth)acrylate monomer; and d) a (meth)acrylic acid or vinyl benzoic acid monomer. In another embodiment, the copolymer can be a polymer comprising constitutional units derived from: a) a monomer having a cyclic urea group; b) a (meth)acrylic acid or vinyl benzoic acid monomer; c) and a (meth)acrylonitrile monomer. The imageable element may be used to prepare a lithographic printing plate that is resistant to press chemistry and can optionally be baked to increase press runlength.
