A process which includes the step of heating a compound of Formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is a hydroxyphenyl group or a group of Formula (II): ##STR2## and R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are independently in each occurrence H or a C.sub.1-10 alkyl group; to a temperature in the range of from 100.degree. C. to 400.degree. C. under reaction conditions sufficient to form one or more 4,4'-dihydroxy-alpha-substituted stilbenes.

Process for the preparation and purification of

Poly(hydroxy ethers) are prepared by reacting a dihydric phenol with a diepoxide in the presence of a catalyst selected from the group consisting of bis(trihydrocarbylphosphoranylidene)ammonium salt, bis[tris(dihydrocarbylamino)phosphoranylidene]ammonium salt, and tetrakis[tris(dihydrocarbylamino)phosphoranylideneamino]phosphonium salt. The reaction between the dihydric phenol and the diepoxide is conducted in an ether or hydroxy ether solvent at a temperature sufficiently high to produce a poly(hydroxy ether). Polymers prepared by the new process are more highly branched than those produced by known methods.

Process for the preparation of thermoplastic poly(hydroxy ethers)

Hydroxy-functionalized polyethers having imide groups in their backbones are prepared by contacting an imide-containing bisphenol with the diglycidyl ether of the same or another bisphenol under conditions sufficient to cause the nucleophilic phenolic hydroxyl moieties to react with epoxy groups. These poly(hydroxy ether imides) possess a combination of high barrier to oxygen transmission (i.e., oxygen transmission rates of less than 10.0 cm.sup.3 -mil/100 in.sup.2 -atm-day) and high heat resistance (i.e., T.sub.g above 120.degree. C.). These polymers are suitable for use in the manufacture of packaging materials with high barrier to oxygen.

Poly(hydroxy ether imides) as barrier packaging materials

Polyethers having improved barrier to oxygen are normally solid, thermoplastic polyethers having aromatic ether repeating units in their backbones and pendent hydroxyl moieties and pendent amido, N-substituted amido and/or hydroxyalkyl moieties. Such polyethers are prepared by reacting diglycidyl ethers of dihydric aromatic compounds such as the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A with dihydric phenols having pendent amido, N-substituted amido and/or hydroxyalkyl moieties such as 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide and 3,5-dihydroxybenzamide.

Amide and hydroxymethyl functionalized polyethers as thermoplastic

The present invention relates to nonlinear optical material comprising nonlinear optical dihydroxy arylhydrazones and to nonlinear optical materials comprising compositions containing at least one divalent moiety of nonlinear optical arylhydrazones. The present invention also relates to polyesters, polyestercarbonates, polycarbonates, polyethers, and poly(hydroxy ether) polymers, incorporating the dihydroxy arylhydrazone as recurring divalent moieties in the backbone of the polymer. The polymeric compositions of the present invention have high glass transition temperatures and exhibit stable nonlinear optical activity at high temperatures over a period of time.

Nonlinear optical arylhydrazones and nonlinear optical polymers thereof

Hydroxy-functional poly(ether sulfonamides) prepared by polymerizing an N,N'-dialkyl or N,N'-diaryldisulfonamide with a diepoxide in the presence of a suitable catalyst exhibit high barrier properties. These are suitable for use in the manufacture of articles such as rigid containers and flexible films exhibiting high barrier to oxygen.

Hydroxy-functional poly(ether sulfonamides) as thermoplastic barrier

Hydroxy-functional poly(amide-ethers) are fabricated into articles such as rigid containers and flexible films exhibiting high barrier to oxygen transmission in both dry and moist environments. For example, a polymer prepared by reacting the diglycidyl ether of 4,4'-isopropylidene bisphenol with .alpha.,.alpha.'-bis(4-hydroxybenzamido)-1,3-xylene exhibits especially high barrier.

Hydroxy-functional poly(amide ethers) as thermoplastic barrier resins

Polyethers having improved barrier to oxygen are normally solid, thermoplastic polyethers having aromatic ether repeating units in their backbones and pendent hydroxyl moieties and pendent amido, N-substituted amido and/or hydroxyalkyl moieties. Such polyethers are prepared by reacting diglycidyl ethers of dihydric aromatic compounds such as diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A with dihydric phenols having pendent amido, N-substituted amido and/or hydroxyalkyl moieties such as 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide and 3,5-dihydroxybenzamide.

Ethylenically unsaturated diamine or triamines, a process for their polymerization and polymeric products. The resulting polymers have unique properties as chelants for metal ions.

Amine containing monomers

Hydroxy substituted arylophenones in general, and 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenones in particular, are produced by catalytic oxidation of diaryl compounds containing hydroxy substituted diaryl moieties in a liquid medium. Oxidation occurs by contact of the diaryl compounds with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a solvent, base, a metal atom catalyst, and optionally, activated carbon. The arylophenones produced are useful as monomers in the production of epoxy and polycarbonate resins.

Catalytic method to produce hydroxy substituted arylophenones

A method for preparing substituted phenoxyphenols which are useful in the preparation of herbicidal (phenoxyphenoxy)propionates is disclosed. The process involves the oxidation of substituted phenoxyphenones to the corresponding phenoxyphenyl esters and their conversion to the desired phenoxyphenol. Novel intermediates for the process are similarly disclosed.
