Methods of increasing the particle size of ammonium octamolybdate (AOM) pigment powder are provided. A method can include heating the AOM pigment powder to a temperature above 20&#xb0; C. for a given amount of time. An ink composition can be produced by formulating AOM pigment powder with increased particle size and incorporating the AOM pigment powder into an ink composition.

A method of imparting color to a plastic substrate comprising applying to the substrate, or incorporating within the substrate, a diacetylene compound of general formula (I) wherein n=1 to 20; R=an optionally substituted Calkyl group which may contain heteroatoms; T=H, an optionally substituted Calkyl group which may contain heteroatoms or &#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;C(&#x2550;O)-QR; Q=NH, CO, NHCONH, OCONH, COS, NHCSNH or NR, wherein m, Qand Rare independently selected from the same groups as n, Qand Rrespectively; Ris an optionally substituted Calkyl group which may contain heteroatoms; and irradiating the substrate to impart color to the substrate is described.

Plastics colouration

A method of forming an image on a substrate by applying energy, involves a substrate in or on which there are at least two different colour-change agents, i.e. a first colour-change agent capable of giving rise to at least two different colours; and a second colour-change agent capable of giving rise to at least one different colour than achievable with the first colour change agent. A preferred embodiment of the invention is a multi-layer laminate comprising, in order, a layer comprising the first agent, a barrier layer, and a layer comprising the second agent.

Method of forming an image on a substrate

A method of forming an image on a substrate by applying energy, involves a substrate in or on which there are at least two different color-change agents, i.e. a first color-change agent capable of giving rise to at least two different colors; and a second color-change agent capable of giving rise to at least one different color than achievable with the first color change agent. A preferred embodiment of the invention is a multi-layer laminate comprising, in order, a layer comprising the first agent, a barrier layer, and a layer comprising the second agent.

In a first aspect, the invention provides an ink formulation comprising: (a) a near infrared absorbing system comprising a compound of the formula MWO, wherein Mis one or more elements selected from the group consisting of H, He, alkali metals such as Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, alkaline earth metals such as Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, rare-earth elements, Zr, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ru, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, Zn, Cd, AL Ga, in, Tl, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, Sb, B, F, P, S, Se, Br, Te, Ti, Nb, V, Mo, Ta, Re, Hf, Os, Bi and I, or ammonium; (b) a color change agent; and (c) a binder. The invention also provides alternative ink formulations for laser marking, a method of forming an image using the ink formulations and a substrate coated with the ink formulation of the invention. Ink formulations according to the invention have been found to have good laser imaging efficacy, and an essentially negligible impact on the background color of the coating.

Ink for laser imaging

A substrate coated with a markable ink formulation, comprising AOM. Further, the substrate is covered by a thermoplastic polymer layer, such that the ink formulation is situated between the substrate and the thermoplastic polymer layer and/or in the thermoplastic polymer layer.

Lamination of AOM

A substrate coated with a markable ink formulation, comprising a thermo activated acid generator (TAG) and a halochromic leuco dye. The thermo activated acid generator is selected form the group consisting of: an amine salt of an organic metal compound comprising boron or silicone and amine neutralized polyalkylnaphthalene polysulphonic acid derivatives. Further, the substrate is covered by a thermoplastic polymer layer, such that the ink formulation is situated between the substrate and the thermoplastic polymer layer and/or in the thermoplastic polymer layer.

Laminated color forming composition

Water soluble marking compounds comprising a transition metal oxyanion and at least one ammonium cation, comprising a nitrogen atom at least one further group selected from the group consisting of OH, COOH, NH2, NHCalkyl, and N(Calkyl), wherein the two Calkyl may be the same type of alkyl or different alkyls, may be used to obtain clear imageable coatings.

Marking compound

An ink formulation having a marking component and a reduced indium tin oxide (r-ITO) is disclosed. The r-ITO in powder form exhibits a lightness (L*), according to the 1976 CIE (L*, a*, b*) space, of not more than 50.

Near infrared absorbers

The disclosed invention relates to the use of molybdenum (VI) peroxo complex containing an amino acid, such as MoO(O)(GLY)(HO), in marking applications, as well as to ink formulations comprising such complexes.

Ink formulation

A textile comprising a diacetylene compound which is capable of changing color when irradiated with light energy. Methods of imparting color to textiles comprising irradiating the textile with light energy are also provided.

Textile colouration

A substrate marking apparatus for use in combination with a substrate comprising a multi-color change diacetylene compound is disclosed. The substrate marking apparatus comprises: at least two radiation sources operable to emit radiation of different wavelengths, optical transformation elements and a control system. The control system takes digital file information and converts this to a set of emission instructions for the radiation sources. The radiation sources are then applied to the substrate in sequence and intensity determined by the control system such that the substrate is activated to change from a colorless state to any one of a range of multiple permanent colors.

Inkless printing apparatus

A method of forming an image on a substrate, which comprises applying to the substrate an activatable color forming compound wherein said activatable color forming compound is initially unreactive but becomes reactive upon activation; activating said color forming compound in the areas of the substrate where the image is to be formed, and, reacting the activated color forming compound into its colored form to produce an image. A substrate imaged using this method is also provided.

Laser imaging

A method of manufacturing a paper substrate comprising a color former which is capable undergoing a light activated color change reaction, wherein the color former is applied to the paper substrate during the manufacture of said paper substrate, and the color former is a metal oxyanion or a molecular organic. A paper substrate obtainable by this method is also provided.

Laser imageable paper

The invention relates to a method of marking a substrate comprising treating the substrate with a boron compound and a charrable agent, and, irradiating the areas of the substrate to be marked such that those areas change colour. Marked substrates obtainable by this method are also provided.
