A threaded connection for drilling tubulars includes a tubular box section having a sidewall. The box section has a tapered box portion of an inner surface of the sidewall between a first end and a second end. The tapered box portion has internal threads, a first torque shoulder on a first side of the tapered box portion, and a second shoulder on a second side of the tapered box portion. A threaded collar having internal collar threads is positioned between the second end and the second shoulder. A threaded insert having a tubular body with an inner surface and an outer surface having external insert threads is configured for threadably connecting to the internal collar threads. A direction of the internal threads of the tapered box portion is opposite to a direction of the internal collar threads and the external insert threads.

Double-shouldered connection for drilling tubulars with large inside diameter

A pressure generating device for use in downhole drilling operations includes a rotating valve portion having a first body with at least one first flow channel, and a stationary valve portion having a second body with at least one second flow channels and at least one bypass channel. A flow restrictor is positioned within the at least one bypass channel for adjusting a total flow area of the at least one bypass channel. During rotation of the rotating valve portion relative to the stationary valve portion, a total flow area of a passage defined by the first flow channel(s), the second flow channel(s), and the at least one bypass channel varies according to a uniform closure pattern to provide uniform pressure pulses within a single revolution of the rotating valve portion. A method of generating uniform pressure pulses in downhole drilling operations is also disclosed.

A thread structure in accordance to one or more embodiments includes a thread extending helically along a portion of a bit body in spaced thread turns, the thread having a crest extending between a first flank and a second flank and a root extending between the thread turns, the root having a curvature defined by a portion of an ellipse tangentially adjoining the first and second flank at respective flank transition points, the ellipse having a major axis extending parallel to the axis and a minor axis extending perpendicular to the major axis and through a root bottom.

Inductive coupler assemblies for controlling the stray magnetic fields of an inductive coupler to reduce the associated losses are disclosed. This results in reduced attenuation (increased efficiency) of the inductive coupler even in the presence of gaps. The assembly includes an inductive coupler having a housing, a biasing element, and a retention mechanism. The assembly further includes a wire surrounded by a ring of flux channel material disposed in the housing. In some embodiments, the retention mechanism is adapted for removal of the inductive coupler from a pipe joint end. The biasing element may be a circumferential spring disposed between the housing and the pipe joint end. The retention mechanism may be a retention snap ring, press fit, or threaded, to removably couple the housing to the pipe joint end.

Logging-while-drilling apparatus and methodologies for measuring streaming potential in an earth formation are provided. The apparatus and methodologies can be utilized to find information relevant to the drilling operations. In particular, since the streaming potential measurement relates directly to fluid flow, the streaming potential measurements can be used to track flow of fluids in the formation. In turn, this information may be used to find information relevant to the drilling operations, such as under-balanced drilling conditions, abnormal formation pressures, open fractures, the permeability of the formation, and formation pressure.

Disclosed are electric cables with improved armor wires used with wellbore devices to analyze geologic formations adjacent a wellbore. The cables include at least one insulated conductor, and one or more armor wires surrounding the insulated conductor. The armor wires include a low density core surrounded by a corrosion resistant alloy clad, where the alloy clad includes such alloys as beryllium-copper based alloys, nickel-chromium based alloys, superaustenitic stainless steel alloys, nickel-cobalt based alloys, nickel-molybdenum-chromium based alloys, and the like. The low density core may be based upon titanium or titanium alloys. The cables of the invention may be any useful electric cable design, including monocables, quadcables, heptacables, quadcables, slickline cables, multiline cables, coaxial cables, or seismic cables.

The invention provides a more efficient way to transfer data to or from a logging tool during a drilling process. A memory module is provided for rapid insertion and retrieval from a logging while drilling tool between drilling runs. The memory module records and stores data collected during the drilling process. A process of the invention includes removing the memory module from the tool; loading a new memory module into the tool that contains the desired tool parameters for the next run. The retrieved memory module is then connected to an independent surface system to download the stored data.
