In order to prevent built up crusts on the flicker assembly from being detrimentally dislodged due to the cleaning fibers impacting the flicker bar assembly, there is provided a soft contact portion flicker bar assembly for mounting in a machine to contact and flick the cleaning fibers moving along a fiber path. The soft contact portion flicker bar assembly includes (a) a base portion for mounting to a frame portion of the machine; (b) a body portion including a distal, first end, and an opposite, second end connected to the base portion; and (c) a tip portion connected to the first, distal end for contacting and interfering with cleaning fibers moving along the fiber path. The tip portion is made of a material having a Shore A durometer hardness of less than 85 for reducing a jarring effect of impact forces between such tip portion and the moving cleaning fibers, thereby preventing detrimental dislodging of built up crusts of particles from any part of the flicker bar assembly.

A surface-treating apparatus has a dual-purpose surface-treating blade assembly that includes a blade holder for holding and loading a blade member, and a one-piece blade member having a first edge mounted to the blade holder and a second edge for contacting and treating a surface. The one-piece blade member has a mid-portion for applying a first edge-loading force to lightly contact and remove random spots from a central imaging region of the surface, a first end portion, and a second end portion. The dual-purpose blade assembly also includes a first shim device and a second shim device assembled respectively to the first end portion and to the second end portion of the blade member for stiffening such end portions and increasing a magnitude of each of a second and a third different edge-loading forces at such end portions relative to the first edge-loading force.

Dual-purpose surface-treating blade assembly

A pair of Electronic Voltmeters (ESV) are utilized to control the photoreceptor charging voltage in a Tri-Level imaging apparatus. One of the ESVs is used to control the voltage increases of a charging device. The other ESV is used to monitor the charge level of the charged area image of a Tri-Level image. When a critical value is sensed the control of the charging device is shifted to the ESV that monitors the charged area image level and limits the output from the charging device to a predetermined target value.

Two sets of targets, one for use during cycle up convergence of electrostatics and one during runtime enable single pass cleaning of developed patches, during cycle up convergence. To this end, different targets from those used during runtime are used for the preclean, transfer and pretransfer dicorotrons during cycle up. Proper charging of the photoreceptor during runtime and cycle up convergence is also enabled by the provision of two charging targets, one for each mode of operation.

In a single pass, tri-level imaging apparatus, erroneous voltage readings of an Electrostatic Voltmeter (ESV) which has become contaminated by charged particles (i.e. toner) are negated by using two ESVs. During each cycle up following a normal cycle down, a pair of Electrostatic Voltmeters (ESVs) are utilized to measure the voltage level on a portion of relatively uncharged portion of a photoreceptor (P/R). Using one of the ESVs, which is less prone to contamination, as a reference, the zero offset of the other is adjusted to achieve the same residual P/R voltage reading. The difference in the readings which is due to toner contamination is the zero offset between the two ESVs. The offset is used to adjust all subsequent voltage readings of the ESV until a new offset is measured.

Electrostatic voltmeter (ESV) zero offset adjustment

A developer unit which develops an electrostatic latent image recorded on a photoconductive member used in an electrophotographic printing machine. The developer unit uses a developer material which ages during the life of the electrophotographic printing machine. Additional developer material having at least carrier granules and toner particles, is supplied to the developer material in the developer unit to extend the life of the developer material. Discharge of developer material from the developer unit is controlled by a permanent magnet and an electromagnet positioned adjacent an exit port in the developer unit. The permanent magnet generates a magnetic flux field in the region of the exit port to form a developer material curtain which prevents the passage of developer material from the exit port. When the electromagnet is energized, it generates a magnetic flux field which attracts developer material from the developer material curtain. Upon de-energization of the electromagnet, the developer material attracted thereto is discharged therefrom.
