An FPGA power management system includes a host power management integrated circuit connected to a system power control block of an FPGA via an FPGA configuration/monitoring bus and a computing device via a power configuration/monitoring bus. The host power management integrated circuit includes a configuration and monitoring block configured to communicate configuration/monitoring signals to and from the FPGA system power control block and the computing device. The host power management integrated circuit further includes at least one voltage regulator for supplying an output voltage to an FPGA power rail according to a power configuration signal communicated by the configuration and monitoring block. The host power management integrated circuit further includes a power profiler configured to measure and supply to the configuration and monitoring block an output current on the FPGA power rail. The FPGA system power control block is configured to coordinate and execute a transfer of required communications between the FPGA and the host power management integrated circuit.

A control method is provided for a power converter configured to generate an output voltage according to a control law controlling a power stage. The method comprises a dual stage identification process for identifying parameters of the power stage. The method includes, in a first stage, identifying at least one parameter of the power stage during ramp up of the power converter and adapting the control law to the identified at least one parameter of said power stage for operating the power converter. The method further includes, in a second stage, determining a response of the power stage; identifying at least one other parameter of the power stage by characterizing the response; and further adapting the control law according to a characteristic of the response.

Adaptive dual stage identification control method for a power stage of a power converter

In a control method for a power converter, an output voltage is generated according to a control law controlling a switched power stage. During ramp up of the power converter, at least one parameter of the power stage is identified, and the control law is adapted to the identified at least one parameter of the power stage for operating the power converter.

This measurement is used to introduce a bias into a tuner tuning the compensator when the amount of activity in the control signal drops.

The application also describes the use of such a calculation to determine the optimum point for switchover between a single phase mode or dual phase mode in a two phase DC-DC power supply.

The present application is directed at methods of controlling power supplies. In particular the present application employs an analog compensator to control the power stage of the power supply with a digital tuner employed to adaptively tune the operation of the analog compensator.

More particularly, the application provides a masterless arrangement in which no single converter controls the operation of the other converters. This is achieved by an arrangement in which each converter attempts to share its current measurement with other converters through an arbitration scheme employed on a data line, with the winning converter providing a defacto current measurement; for example, a maximum or minimum, to the overall arrangement.

The present application provides an adaptive control system for controlling a plant in particular a DC-DC power converter. The control system has two controllers of differing characteristics. The output of the individual controllers Hand Hare combined together to provide a combined control signal H to the plant, where H=&#x3b1;H+(1&#x2212;&#x3b1;)Hand where the adaptive control system is tuned by adjusting the value of &#x3b1; between 0 and 1 to find an optimum control position.

A method of passive current balancing for digital control of multiphase DC-DC converters is provided based upon the duty-cycle matching principle. Current balance is achieved by inserting a digital filter into the control path. Being sensorless, it is insensitive to current measurement inaccuracies caused by noise, component value tolerance or variation. It will be shown that effective current balancing can be achieved via some simple modifications to standard voltage mode control laws, allowing current balancing to be achieved with minor additional complexity. The current share scheme has been shown to perform well dynamically, matching currents cycle by cycle during load steps, and clearly benefiting from the absence of the slow current share loop popular in traditional methods. The current share filter proposed, blends well with existing digital controllers. Given the very low complexity in implementing the filter, the degree of matching achieved is exceptional.
