A controller for determining an injection strategy for a fuel injector within a hydrogen fuel injection system within an engine, the controller comprising: an input arranged to receive an engine operating parameter and a pressure signal associated with the pressure of hydrogen fuel available for injection from the injector in the fuel injection system; a processor arranged to determine an injection strategy for the injector in dependence on the received pressure signal and engine control parameter, the determined injection strategy comprising one or more injector control signals to control operation of the fuel injector; an output arranged to output the one or more control signals to the fuel injector.

Fuel injection system for hydrogen gas

A fuel injector for an internal combustion engine comprising an injection nozzle comprising a nozzle body with a nozzle bore; a valve needle assembly received within the nozzle bore and including a valve needle engageable with a seat region to control fuel delivery through an outlet of the injection nozzle; and a first actuator arrangement operable to apply an opening force to an engagement region of the valve needle assembly to cause an opening movement thereof. The first actuator arrangement comprises a first conductive coil mounted concentrically on a first body and a first armature configured to apply the opening force to the valve needle assembly. The first body comprises a first, radially inner region having a relatively high magnetic permeability and a second region having a relatively low magnetic permeability, the second region being disposed radially between the first coil and the first, radially inner region.

Fuel injector

A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine comprises: a first fuel injector which is arranged within a housing unit; an accumulator volume for supplying fuel to the first fuel injector; a first fuel pump arrangement comprising a pumping plunger which is driven, in use, to cause pressurisation of fuel within a first pump chamber; a first metering valve which is operable to control fuel flow into the first pump chamber; a first fuel passage providing communication between the first pump chamber and the accumulator volume; and a first non-return valve located in the first fuel passage between the first pump chamber and the accumulator volume; wherein the first fuel injector communicates with the first fuel passage at a position between the first non-return valve and the accumulator volume; and wherein communication between the first fuel injector and the accumulator volume is uninterrupted.

Fuel injection system

A control valve arrangement for use in controlling fuel pressure within a control chamber () includes a control valve member () which is movable between a first position in which the control chamber () communicates with a source of high pressure fuel, and a second position in which the control chamber () communicates with a low pressure fuel drain and communication between the control chamber () and the source of high pressure fuel is broken. The control valve arrangement also includes restricted flow means () for restricting the rate of flow of fuel from the control chamber () to the low pressure fuel drain when the control valve member () is moved from the first position to the second position. It is desirable for the restricted flow means to be configured and arranged such the rate of flow of fuel from the source of high pressure fuel to the low pressure drain for the period of time for which the control valve member () is moving between the second position and the first position is also restricted.

Control valve arrangement

A cam arrangement for use with a high pressure fuel pump arrangement for delivering fuel to an associated engine, the cam arrangement including at least two cams () that are mounted, in use, upon an engine camshaft and each of which is arranged to drive a respective pumping plunger () of the fuel pump arrangement, wherein each plunger is driven to perform a pumping stroke, against return biasing means (), during which fuel within a pump chamber () associated with each plunger is pressurised, and whereby said return biasing means () effects a plunger return stroke, and wherein each cam () is oriented relative to the or each other cam and has a surface () shaped such that the associated plunger return stroke is interrupted to define at least one step of plunger movement that is substantially synchronous with the pumping stroke of another of the plungers () of the pump, thereby to reduce negative torque loading of the camshaft.

A fuel injection system for supplying pressurised fuel to a fuel injector, the fuel injection system comprising an accumulator volume for supplying fuel at a first injectable pressure level to the fuel injector through a fuel supply passage, a pump arrangement for increasing the pressure of fuel supplied to the injector to a second injectable pressure level, and a valve arrangement operable between a first position in which fuel at the first injectable pressure level is supplied to the injector and a second position in which communication between the injector and the accumulator volume is broken so as to permit fuel at the second injectable pressure to be supplied to the injector. The injection system may include a valve arrangement in the form of a three-position valve or may include a shut off valve for controlling the supply of fuel through the fuel supply passage.

A fuel system arranged to deliver fuel at high pressure to a fuel injector through a high pressure fuel line defined, at least in part, within first and second housing parts of a pressure relief valve arrangement. The first and second housing parts define first and second separable valve surfaces respectively. A clamping arrangement is provided for applying a clamping load to the first and second housing parts so as to urge first and second valve surfaces respectively thereof into substantially sealing engagement. The clamping arrangement is arranged to permit separation of the first and second valve surfaces in the event that fuel pressure within the high pressure fuel line exceeds a predetermined amount, thereby to permit fuel within the high pressure fuel line to flow to a region of relatively low pressure to relieve fuel pressure within the high pressure fuel line.

Fuel injection system with structurally biased relief valve

A fuel pump comprising a pumping plunger reciprocable within a bore, and a drive arrangement for driving the pumping plunger. The drive arrangement includes a compressible load transmission arrangement for transmitting movement of the drive arrangement to the pumping plunger. The load transmission arrangement comprises first and second surfaces which define, therebetween, a chamber for fluid. The fuel pump also comprises supply means for permitting the chamber to be supplied with fluid, in use, and control means for controlling the flow of fluid from the chamber.
