The apparatus comprises at least one processor and at least one memory comprising computer program instructions operable to, with the at least one processor: determine, based on an input signal indicative of a characteristic of an input to the apparatus, that a predetermined condition for reduction of an exposure of the first fluid to incident light is satisfied; and, in response, generate an output signal to control the electrowetting display element to configure the first fluid in a retracted configuration with the first fluid at least partly overlapped by the radiation filter and with both the first fluid and the second fluid in contact with a surface of the first support plate.

A method of controlling an electrowetting element. The method includes receiving first data indicative of a first display effect. Using the first data, a first magnitude of a first voltage is determined. The first voltage with the first magnitude is generated and applied to the electrowetting element. Second data indicative of a second display effect different from the first display effect is received. Using the second data, a second magnitude of a second voltage is determined. The second magnitude is equal to the first magnitude. The second voltage with the second magnitude is generated and applied to the electrowetting element.

An electrowetting display device includes a control system for changing a configuration of first, second and third fluids by applying a voltage level of a first voltage to a first electrode and by applying a voltage level of a second voltage to a second electrode. The voltage level of the first voltage is selected from a first plurality of voltage levels and the voltage level of the second voltage is selected from a second plurality of voltage levels, the second plurality of voltage levels comprising fewer voltage levels than the first plurality of voltage levels.

Subject matter disclosed herein relates to arrangements and techniques that provide for using a wavelength specific illumination for illuminating a display, for example an electrowetting display. The electrowetting display comprises a first substrate and a second substrate. A plurality of pixel regions is provided between the first substrate and the second substrate. The electrowetting display further comprises a first fluid within the pixel regions and on the first substrate. The first fluid comprises one or more dyes and a second fluid is disposed on the first fluid. The second fluid is substantially immiscible with the first fluid. An illumination layer is included between the first substrate and the second substrate. The illumination layer comprises one or more LEDs and at least one of the LEDs produces light at a specific wavelength corresponding to a wavelength of absorption of one of the one or more dyes.

Illumination of an electrowetting display

In a system having a matrix of electrowetting display elements, a column driving system transmits a column voltage signal to an electrode of each electrowetting display element of at least one selected row of n rows of electrowetting display elements. A first row driving system transmits a first row voltage signal to a switchable element associated with each respective electrowetting display element of the selected row. A second row driving system transmits a second row voltage signal to the switchable element associated with each respective electrowetting display element of rows of the n rows of electrowetting display elements. A configuration of respective first and second fluids of the electrowetting display elements of at least one row of the n rows is controlled by selectively transmitting: the first row voltage signal using the first row driving system, and the second row voltage signal, using the second row driving system.

A method of manufacturing an electrowetting device includes dispensing a first liquid on a surface of a support plate and dispensing a second liquid to adjoin the first liquid. The first liquid is an emulsion. A first portion of the first liquid transfers into the second liquid to form a first layer of liquid and a second layer of liquid substantially immiscible with the first layer. The first layer comprises a second portion of the first liquid and the second layer comprises the second liquid and the first portion.

A method of driving an electrowetting display device that includes a display element having a cavity; a first fluid and a second fluid within the cavity, the first fluid being immiscible with the second fluid; a surface facing the cavity; and a first electrode. The display device includes a control system for applying a voltage to the first electrode to provide a display state in response to a signal level of the voltage, wherein the control system is arranged to configure the signal level throughout a display period such that the second fluid adjoins at least a minimum area of the surface, the minimum area being greater than a zero area. The method includes applying at least one display signal level during the display period, the at least one display signal level configured such that the first fluid and the second fluid adjoin the surface throughout the display period.

Driving an electrowetting display device

A method of driving an electrowetting display device including at least one pixel, the method comprising: applying a first pixel voltage to the pixel during a first portion of the display period; and applying a second pixel voltage to the pixel during a second portion of the display period, the first and second pixel voltages corresponding to a display state of the pixel, and the first pixel voltage and the second pixel voltage having different polarities.

Display device

An electrowetting system includes an electrowetting element having a first fluid and a second, immiscible fluid. The configuration of the fluids is dependent on the voltage applied to the element, the voltage being appliable upon closing a switch. With the switch being open, the voltage on the element is substantially maintainable for a period of time which is shorter than or equal to a relaxation time period of the element due to backflow.

Electrowetting system and method for operating

The present invention relates to an electrowetting system comprising an electrowetting element, a driver stage for applying a voltage to the element, and a switch connecting the electrowetting element to an output of the driver stage. The element comprises a first fluid and a second, immiscible fluid. The instantaneous position of the fluids is dependent on the voltage applied to the element, the voltage being set when the switch is closed. The voltage on the element is substantially maintained during a holding state longer than 70 ms when the switch is open.
