A hinge mechanism comprising first and second members rotatable relative to one another about a hinge axis from a first to a second position; and a biasing arrangement operative to adopt an active mode to bias the first and second members into at least one relative position and operative to adopt an inactive mode where the biasing arrangement does not provide bias to the first or second members to undergo relative rotation, wherein the biasing arrangement remains in the inactive mode on relative rotation of the first and second members through a first selected angular displacement between the first position and the second position, and is in the active mode on relative rotation of the first and second members through a second selected angular displacement between the first position and the second position.

Hinge mechanism and a hinge assembly

A magnetic self-latching device for a gate has a main body with handles on either side for operation or has an arrangement to be remotely actuated. A latching body has a high strength magnet usually provided at the bottom of a cavity which defines a latching shoulder. The latching body is adapted to be fixed to a gate post. The main body, with its housing, can be mounted on the gate frame and incorporates a latch pin which, in the door-closed position, is displaced by magnetic attraction to an extended latching position and against the biasing of a return spring. The gate cannot be opened until actuation of the mechanism occurs, for example by rotating a handle to retract the pin against the magnetic force; the gate can then be swung open. When the handle is released, the biasing spring retains the latch pin in a retracted position.

Magnetic latch

A latch has a displaceable latching element in a housing for engagement with a separate striker arm to be latched behind an engagement shoulder of the latching element. The housing mounts a cylinder lock to receive a key from the front. A rotor is mounted on the rear of cylinder lock and rotation of the key rotation the rotor to drive a locking element to engage and lock the latching element. The rotor may also be axial displaceable against spring biasing responsive to a rear unit pushing element whereby unlocking from a rear cylinder lock may rotate the rotor to unlock and pushing causes the latching element to be displaced against its biasing to release the striker arm. Embodiments include a gravity biased and manually opened latch and a spring biased self-locking embodiment.

Latches for gates and doors

A latch has a magnet in one unit and an attracted element (e.g. ferromagnetic structure or another magnet) in second unit with a latching mechanism which operate under magnetic attraction. The latch has an actuator connected to a linkage to cause displacement of the magnet or the attracted element in a direction substantially normal to the axis of pivoting.

Magnetic gate latch

A magnetic latch for a gate has first and second units for mounting on a gate and a gate post respectively. The first unit has a displaceable latch element displaceably mounted in a support in a housing and biased to a retracted position, and a second unit with a complementary engagement structure with which a latching portion of the latch element is adapted to engage when the magnetic latch is in a latching position and the latch element is displaced to a projecting position. A magnetic attracting arrangement is provided to cause the latch element to move to the projecting position and engage in the engagement structure when the magnetic latch is in the latching position, and then the engagement structure prevents movement of the door or gate away from the closed position. A retraction element is provided in the first unit for displacing the support and increasing the bias on the latch element to exceed the force of the magnetic attracting arrangement, whereby the latch element moves towards the retracted position and the gate may be moved from the closed position.

Magnetic safety latch

A gate latch is adapted to be installed on a gate post and a complementary striker arm is secured typically to a gate so that, upon closure of the gate, the striker arm engages a displacable latching element mounted in a housing of the latch to displace the latching element. The latching element is biased towards its open position but when the striker arm engages with the latching element it is displaced, thereby releasing an interference portion of a biased locking element, whereby the locking element is released to move under its biasing into a locking position so that self-locking is provided for the latch. A rotary release mechanism may be actuated to return the locking element so that the latching element can be released to release the striker bar and the gate may be opened.

A lost motion arrangement is provided so that there is substantially no load on the pin when the handles are released and the pin is supported in the retracted position by the return spring. A carriage and an associated actuator or a flexible/semi flexible line connection is provided in the housing for incorporating the lost motion arrangement.

Self-latching magnetic latching device

A gravity latch for a gate has a front unit having a key operated lock accessible from its front face and a latching tongue mounted in a housing and adapted to capture and retain a striker pin for use with the latch and mounted on a gate, the front unit having a locking element adapted to be displaced by the lock when key operated and a connection arrangement for, connecting to a separate rear unit adapted to be mounted on the opposite side of the gate post. The rear unit has a similar key operated lock and connects through a connection element of an elongate form. A lost-motion connection is provided in association with each lock so that each lock can be actuated independently and either can lock or unlock the latching tongue, and when the tongue is unlocked the rear unit, through a push-button can displace the tongue to release the striker pin.

Gravity latch

The present invention relates to latches, and in particular gravity latches. The latch comprises a housing which integrally mounts together with the latch a lock mechanism The latch can therefore be locked. The lock mechanism is such that the latch can also be locked in the open position. A further mechanism is also provided which enables operation of the latch from the opposite side of the fence, gate or door to where the latch is mounted.
