A method for generating a document, comprising providing a set of content items in a first configuration for the document, using a processor, generating alignment data representing a measure for the alignment of the content items in the first configuration, using the alignment data to determine if the content items are aligned with one another within a predefined threshold measure for alignment for the document, and a document layout system comprising a processing module configured to generate a document layout.

A method executed by a computer of generating a repurposed document includes: providing a representation of a first document with no explicitly defined structure, extracting structural information for the first document using a set of predefined rules, determining a first content item formatted using a first style of the first document using the structural information, applying a second style to the first content item in order to generate a second content item, and generating the repurposed document using the second content item, wherein a visual significance hierarchical score is maintained between the first and second content items.

A network layer bridge for connection between network segments with different data link layer addressing. The bridge has includes: plurality of ports, each for connection to different network segments, wherein a first port is for connection to a first network segment and a second port for connection to respective first and second network segment. The bridge also has a memory for storing network layer addresses, for nodes together with corresponding port identifiers and data link layer addresses, and the memory is adapted to store data link layer addresses of more than one type; the bridge also has a means for and a unit for discovering corresponding port identifier and data link layer address for a network layer address. For which these are not already known. The bridge is adapted to forwards a message from a first node connected through the first network segment to the first port to a second node connected through the second -network segment to the second port when the corresponding port identifier and data link level address for both the first and second nodes are stored in the memory; the message being addressed with the network layer address of the second node, and the network layer bridge directs directing the message through the corresponding port to the corresponding data link level address for the second node.

Method and apparatus for bridging between networks

A secure print system comprises a sending computer entity and a plurality of receiving entities, each capable of decrypting and printing a specified number of copies of a document. The sending computer entity and the plurality of receiving devices are each pre-registered with each other by means of unique device identification number, which is embedded in inaccessible hardware, firmware or software components at the point of manufacture, linking the sending computer entity and the plurality of receiving devices. The receiving devices, after decrypting a received message, print a specified number of copies only, before deleting the electronic data from which the document copies have been printed.

Mechanism for controlling if/when material can be printed on a specific printer

An internet-connected service system is provided for facilitating communication across the internet between image-sending and image-receiving systems that have dial-up internet access. The image-sending system, after connecting to the internet, sends a communication request to the service system and the latter is then responsible for waking up the image-receiving system. Upon being woken up, the image-receiving system connects to the internet and contacts the service system. The service system then transfers the current network address of at least one of the systems to the other thereby enabling direct communication to be established between the image-sending and image-receiving systems.

Communications arrangement and method using service system to facilitate the establishment of end-to-end communication over a network

Metering of a data transfer operation between two end systems across a communications infrastructure is done by having at least one of the end systems send a metering message to a service system. Both end systems can be set to send respective metering messages to the service system at the conclusion of the transfer operation. Metering messages can also be sent on an on-going basis during the course of the transfer operation by one or both end systems; in this latter case, the end system or systems involved preferably maintain a connection with the service system throughout the transfer operation. Metering can be in terms of pages sent.

A network layer bridge includes: plurality of ports for connection to different network segments, a first port and a second port for connection to respective first and second network segments; a memory for storing network layer addresses for nodes with corresponding port identifiers and data link layer addresses, and data link layer addresses of more than one type; and a unit for discovering corresponding port identifier and data link layer address for a network layer address. The bridge forwards a message from a first node to a second node when corresponding port identifiers and data link level addresses for both first and second nodes are stored in the memory; the message being addressed with the network layer address of the second node, and the network layer bridge directing the message through the corresponding port to the corresponding data link level address for the second node.

Customer premises equipment ( B) connected to a telephone line ( B), is arranged to be woken up remotely and then to initiate communication with a network-based service system. ( ). In order to avoid the cost involved in having a dedicated phone line for the equipment, the equipment ( B) needs to be able to be woken up in a selective manner that does not have significant impact on the operation of other apparatus that may be connected to the same phone line ( B). Several different techniques are provided for waking up the equipment ( B) and initiating communication with the service system ( ). In one embodiment, equipment wakeup is effected by a call with particular characteristics, the equipment ( B) once woken up calling a network access point ( ) to establish communication with the service system ( ). In another embodiment, a wakeup call is placed via a network access point ( ) and the equipment picks up the call and uses it to establish network access. In other embodiments, the equipment is woken up by means of a wakeup indicator transmitted independently of a normal call on the line connected to the equipment, such as by signalling passed over the phone line or by radio paging.

Initiation of communication between network service system and customer-premises equipment

Message-routing apparatus is known for routing messages between a plurality of communications networks. Typically, the known apparatus comprises a respective network interface card for each communications network and a shared, processor-based, routing manager with which the cards communicate through a backplane bus system. In order to overcome the bandwidth limitations of such known apparatus, the present invention provides a local routing manager on each card and high-speed, point-to-point, links interconnecting the local routing managers in a closed loop. Each local routing manager recognizes whether a message passed to it is for outward transmission over the associated network; if this is not the case, the message is passed to the local routing manager of the next card. Any messages which the local routing managers are unable to route, are diverted to a shared routing manager.
