A polymer comprising units having the structure (I): wherein x is 2 or 3, wherein L is (CH), where y is an integer from 1 to 10, or wherein L is CH(CH)CHS(CH), where z is an integer from 1 to 5; wherein [Q] is absent or is a polymerised moiety consisting of units having the structure (II): wherein R is a hydrocarbyl group, or a hydrocarbyl group containing one or more heteroatoms, wherein R may be linear, branched or cyclic, saturated or unsaturated, and wherein R has from 1 to 30 carbon atoms; wherein [Q] either consists of identical units of structure (II), or wherein [Q] consists of more than one different units of structure (II), differing in group R; and wherein X is a halogen or another chain terminating group. The polymers may find use as additives in lubricating compositions where they provide friction improvement and wear reduction.

Polymers and lubricating compositions containing polymers

A lubricating oil composition comprising at least 50 percent by mass, based on the mass of the composition of an oil of lubricating viscosity and 0.01 to 25 percent by mass, based on the mass of the composition of a polymer comprising units (a) and one or both units (b) and (c):&#x2014;N(COR)(CH)&#x2014;&#x2003;&#x2003;(a)&#x2014;NH(CH)&#x2014;&#x2003;&#x2003;(b)&#x2014;N(CHCH(CH)COOR)(CH)&#x2003;&#x2003;(c)

Lubricating oil additives

A lubricating composition comprises at least 50 percent by mass, based on the mass of the composition of an oil of lubricating viscosity and 0.01 to 25 percent by mass, based on the mass of the composition of an oil-soluble poly(2-oxazine) polymer. The polymer has the repeat unit: where the number (n) of repeat units is an integer between 4 and 500, such as between 4 and 400. The polymer carries an inorganic or organic nucleophilic polymerisation terminating group (t), and an initiator group (i) connected to the N atom of a repeat unit, the initiator group (i) being effective to initiate the polymerisation of linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbyl moieties. Rcomprises a single or a mixture of linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbyl groups having 1-50 carbon atoms, some or all having 12-50 carbon atoms, or of at least one macro-monomeric hydrocarbyl group with more than 50 carbon atoms.

A method of making a polymer having the structure (I): wherein L is a linking group, R is a hydrocarbon group or a substituted-hydrocarbon group, and x is 2 or more, preferably from 2 to 100, more preferably from 2 to 50; and wherein each {Q} is an identical polymer block or contains a plurality of polymer blocks. The method comprises reacting a di-halo initiator with a selected monomer one or more times and then reacting the resulting moiety with a dithiol compound of the structure HS&#x2014;R&#x2014;SH.

Method of making polymers

A polymer having the structure (I): L is a linking group, R is a hydrocarbon group or a substituted-hydrocarbon group, and x is 2 or more, preferably from 2 to 100, more preferably from 2 to 50. Each {Q} is (a) an identical polymer block composed of 3 or more monomer units, or (b) contains a plurality of polymer blocks, each polymer block being composed of 3 or more monomer units, such that the moiety {Q}-L-{Q} has the structure {P. . . PP}-L-{PP. . . P} where each Pis an individual polymer block, the number of polymer blocks n in each {Q} being the same; wherein for each value of n the polymer blocks are identical; and wherein n is an integer of 2 or more, preferably from 2 to 100, more preferably from 2 to 50.

A lubricating composition comprises a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and 0.01 to 25 percent by mass, based on the mass of the composition of an oil-soluble copolymer. The copolymer comprises units (a) and units (b):&#x2014;N(COR)CHCH&#x2014;&#x2003;&#x2003;(a)&#x2014;N(COR)CHCHCH&#x2014;&#x2003;&#x2003;(b)wherein the polymer carries an inorganic or organic nucleophilic polymerisation terminating group (t), and an initiator group (i) connected to the N atom of a repeat unit (a) or (b), the initiator group (i) being effective to initiate the polymerisation of linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbyl moieties. A lubricating composition comprises a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and 0.01 to 25 percent by weight, based on the weight of the composition, of a poly(2-oxazoline) polymer. The polymer has the repeat unit:&#x2014;N(COR)CHCH&#x2014;wherein the number of repeat units (n) in the polymer is an integer between 4 and 1000, such as between 4 and 500. The polymer carries an inorganic or organic nucleophilic polymerisation terminating group (t), and an initiator group (i) connected to the N atom of a repeat unit, the initiator group (i) being effective to initiate the polymerisation of linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbyl moieties. At least 5% of the total number of the groups Rin the polymer comprise alkenyl groups having between 15 and 20 carbon atoms.

Lubricating oil compositions

An additive package is disclosed for preparing an automotive crankcase lubricating oil composition for an internal combustion engine. The additive package is made by admixing: The additive package includes less than 2.00 mass % preferably less than 1.50 mass %, of a friction modifier which is a monoester of a Cto Ccarboxylic acid and which is free of nitrogen. Component (ii) is preferably an overbased metal hydroxybenzoate detergent. Component (iii) acts as a friction modifier and can be used as a replacement for a friction modifier such as glycerol monooleate. The additive package exhibits improved stability.

Additive package and lubricating oil composition

A lubricating oil composition having a sulphated ash content of less than or equal to 1.2 mass % as determined by ASTM D874 and a phosphorous content of less than or equal to 0.12 mass % as determined by ASTM D5185, which lubricating oil composition comprises or is made by admixing: an oil of lubricating viscosity, in a major amount; an oil-soluble or oil-dispersible polymeric friction modifier as an additive in an effective minor amount; and, at least one oil-soluble or oil-dispersible molybdenum compound as an additive in an effective minor amount.

An internal combustion engine crankcase lubricating oil composition having a sulphated ash content of no greater than 1.2 mass %, based on the mass of the lubricating oil composition, and a phosphorous content of no greater than 0.1 mass %, based on the mass of the lubricating oil composition, which lubricating oil composition comprises or is made by admixing:
