The present invention relates to a powered surgical tool that selectively provides rotational oscillations to a tool head (effector) to effect tissue modification during a surgical procedure. The present invention also relates to cutting tools and tissue modification tools that operate to modify tissue when rotated in either or both directions about the longitudinal axis of the tool. The present surgical tool and cutting tools are effective to modify selective tissues while selectively preventing the modification of other tissues. For example, hard tissue, like bone, may be modified while soft tissue is not modified, or soft tissue may be modified without modification to hard tissue.

Powered surgical tool with transmission

A bone, cartilage, and disk removal tool assembly is provided with a motor mounted in a housing. A spindle is mounted for rotation to the housing. A rack-and-pinion mechanism is operably driven by the motor and connected to the spindle to oscillate the spindle for providing a rotary oscillating cutting operation. According to at least another embodiment, a plurality of cams is supported in the housing and driven for rotation by the motor. A plurality of followers is mounted for rotation to the housing, in engagement with the plurality of cams so that one rotation of the plurality of cams oscillates the plurality of followers more than once while preventing over-rotation of the plurality of followers. A peak angular acceleration of the spindle is less than nine million radians per second squared.

Rotary oscillating bone, cartilage, and disk removal tool assembly

The present disclosure provides a cutting tool for surgical procedures. More specifically, the present cutting tool is suitable for bi-directional cutting and removal of soft and hard tissues for surgical procedures. The cutting tool includes a substantially rigid shaft having a shaped end portion. The shaped end portion includes a plurality of shaped talons; each talon including a body bent to retain tissue, and each talon including a cutter end. The cutter end includes both acute and obtuse cutting surface relief angles for diverse cutting action with respect to hard and soft tissues.

Bi-directional disk removal and decortication tool

A handheld tool for providing irrigation and/or suction is provided. In certain embodiments, the tool has a single cannula for providing both suction and irrigation, while in others there are separate suction and irrigation cannulas. In some embodiments, flush water is supplied by actuating a flush button which both pinches closed a suction hose and opens a flush hose. If present, the irrigation cannula may be opened by actuating an irrigation button. In certain embodiments, the irrigation and/or flush button may be provided with blade tips to pinch closed the irrigation or flush hoses in cooperation with a blade extending from the tool housing.

Suction and irrigation apparatus with anti-clogging capability

A cutting tool for bone, cartilage, and disk removal includes a body with a first radial array of helical flutes formed along the body with a continuous radius in a first helical direction. The body has a second radial array of helical flutes formed along the body with a continuous radius in a second helical direction opposed to the first helical direction and intersecting the first array of helical flutes. Each helical flute forms a pair of spaced apart rake surfaces, which collectively perform a first and second cutting operations along a side of the body such that the intersecting rakes balance the cutting operation thereby minimizing axial loading of the cutting tool to permit bidirectional cutting while minimizing g inadvertent axial translation of the tool.
