RF/optical shared aperture for high availability wideband communication RF/FSO links

Techniques for combining initially separate single mode and multimode optical beams into a single 'Dual Mode' fiber optic have been developed. Bi-directional propagation of two beams that are differentiated only by their mode profiles (i.e., wavefront conditions) is provided. The beams can be different wavelengths and or contain different modulation information but still share a common aperture. This method allows the use of conventional micro optics and hybrid photonic packaging techniques to produce small rugged packages suitable for use in industrial or military environments.

Separating and combining single-mode and multimode optical beams

An method and system for laser beam tracking and pointing is based on a conventional position sensing detector (PSD) or quadrant cell but with the use of amplitude-modulated light. A combination of logarithmic automatic gain control, filtering, and synchronous detection offers high angular precision with exceptional dynamic range and sensitivity, while maintaining wide bandwidth. Use of modulated light enables the tracking of multiple beams simultaneously through the use of different modulation frequencies. It also makes the system resistant to interfering light sources such as ambient light. Beam pointing is accomplished by feeding back errors in the measured beam position to a beam steering element, such as a steering mirror. Closed-loop tracking performance is superior to existing methods, especially under conditions of atmospheric scintillation.

Method and system for controlling the position of a beam of light

Free-space optical (FSO) laser communication systems offer exceptionally wide-bandwidth, secure connections between platforms that cannot other wise be connected via physical means such as optical fiber or cable. However, FSO links are subject to strong channel fading due to atmospheric turbulence and beam pointing errors, limiting practical performance and reliability. We have developed a fade-tolerant architecture based on forward error correcting codes (FECs) combined with delayed, redundant, sub-channels. This redundancy is made feasible though dense wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and/or high-order M-ary modulation. Experiments and simulations show that error-free communications is feasible even when faced with fades that are tens of milliseconds long. We describe plans for practical implementation of a complete system operating at 2.5 Gbps.

Fade-resistant forward error correction method for free-space optical communications systems

A system and method of remotely extracting information from a communications station by interrogation with a low power beam. Nonlinear phase conjugation of the low power beam results in a high power encoded return beam that automatically tracks the input beam and is corrected for atmospheric distortion. Intracavity nondegenerate four wave mixing is used in a broad area semiconductor laser in the communications station to produce the return beam.

Remotely-interrogated high data rate free space laser communications link

An improved curtain corner support, is disclosed, which is slidably attached to a standard enclosure curtain rod in order to support and extend a curtain inward around the side corner, where the curtain meets the wall, of a shower stall, a booth or a similar enclosure. This apparatus is used to seal the enclosure to provide privacy or to prevent water from escaping from a shower stall. This corner curtain support, suspended from an enclosure curtain rod near a side lateral wall of the enclosure, comprises a counterweighted, cantilevered, right triangular frame, with the hypotenuse edge formed into a concave arc directed into the enclosed region of the frame, from which can be suspended a curtain, forming an approximately right angle corner enclosure barrier about the open side edge of the enclosure, when the corner support, holding the curtain, is pushed against this side wall.

Curtain corner supports

An integrated optical capillary electrophoresis system for analyzing an analyte. A modulated optical pump beam impinges on an capillary containing the analyte/buffer solution which is separated by electrophoresis. The thermally-induced change in the index of refraction of light in said electrophoresis capillary is monitored using an integrated micro-interferometer. The interferometer includes a first interferometer arm intersecting the electrophoresis capillary proximate the excitation beam and a second, reference interferometer arm. Changes in index of refraction in the analyte measured by interrogating the interferometer state using white light interferometry and a phase-generated carrier demodulation technique. Background thermo-optical activity in the buffer solution is cancelled by splitting the pump beam and exciting pure buffer solution in a second section of capillary where it crosses the reference arm of the interferometer.

Chemical micro-sensor

A first injection laser signal and a first part of a reference laser beam are injected into a first laser element. At least one additional injection laser signal and at least one additional part of a reference laser beam are injected into at least one additional laser element. The first part of a reference laser beam and the at least one additional part of a reference laser beam are amplified and phase conjugated producing a first amplified output laser beam emanating from the first laser element and an additional amplified output laser beam emanating from the at least one additional laser element. The first amplified output laser beam and the additional amplified output laser beam are combined into a powerful laser beam.

Shower curtain support

A curtain corner support which is slidably supported on a curtain rod which spans an opening defined between vertical walls of an enclosure. The corner support positions an end portion of a curtain so that it is adjacent to one of the enclosure walls to prevent water, spray and/or light from escaping around the edges of the enclosure. The corner support consists of a body member which is supported by the curtain rod, a beam cantilevered from the body member which supports the end portion of the curtain, and a device for transferring the moment generated by the end portion of the curtain and the beam to the curtain rod to prevent the body member from rotating about the curtain rod. Wall attachments are affixed to at least one curtain rod end for transferring the torque from the curtain rod to at least one of the vertical walls of the enclosure to maintain the top edge of the curtain in an approximately horizontal plane.

A shower curtain corner support which can be slidably attached to a standard shower curtain rod in order to support and extend a shower curtain around the side corner of a shower stall or bathtub is disclosed. This apparatus is used to seal the shower area to prevent water and spray from escaping around the edges of a standard shower curtain. This shower curtain corner support, which is attached to a standard shower curtain rod near a side wall, consists of a short narrow beam directed into the shower area from which is suspended a shower curtain or curtain liner which will form an approximately right angle corner barrier about the open side corner of the shower area. A counterweight is attached to an outward beam of the corner support apparatus to maintain it in a parallel relation to the floor when the curtain is attached.
