Additive composition

A method of simulating a split &#x3bc; axle test for limited slip differentials for automotive applications. The method includes treating a clutch pack for a limited slip differential in a lubricant composition for a first period of time at a predetermined temperature. The clutch pack is mounted in a friction testing rig. A predetermined amount of test fluid is provided to the testing rig. A drive for the testing rig is cycled on and off for a predetermined number of on and off cycles. When the drive is on, a predetermined relative rotational speed between friction plates and metal plates in the clutch pack is generated.

Limited slip differential performance simulation procedure

The present invention relates to the use of a high level of a silicon-containing antifoam agent in automatic transmission fluid ('ATF') applications. More specifically, the invention relates to a formulation and method for the reduction or elimination of pump whine that occurs in high-pressure pumps used to circulate transmissions fluids in vehicles. The invention also relates to fully formulated ATFs, to transmissions lubricated with such ATFs, and to vehicles containing transmissions lubricated with such ATFs.

Sulfurized phosphorous compounds, which are effective anti-wear, extreme pressure agents, may be formed without odor by reacting phosphorous compounds with other reactive sulfur sources, including elemental sulfur, before addition of polysulfides. The process of the present invention yields a lubricant additive package which is odor free or very low odor, thermally stable, and which contains polysulfides. Particularly useful embodiments of this invention include low odor gear lubricant additive packages.

Functionalized olefin copolymer additives

A reaction product of at least one C.sub.5 -C.sub.60 carboxylic acid and at least one amine selected from the group consisting of guanidine, aminoguanidine, urea, thioruea and the salts thereof is disclosed as an additive for hydrocarbon fuels. The reaction product is added to a fuel, such as gasoline, at levels of from about 5 pounds of reaction product per thousands barrels of fuel (PTB) to about 100 PTB to increase the lubricity of the fuel and thereby reduce the wear occasioned upon the fuel pump. A composition comprising a hydrocarbon fuel and the reaction product is also disclosed.

Ashless dispersants are formed using polymers of propylene characterized in that they are liquid substantially linear polymers, they have stereo-irregularity in the polymer chain, at least 60 mol percent of the polymer has a terminal vinylidene group and, optionally, the polymer contains up to 25 mol percent of ethylene or a C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 monoolefin polymerized into the polymer chains.
