A process for manufacturing superconducting magnetic coils from strain-tolerant, superconducting multi-filament composite conductors is described. The method involves winding the precursor to a multi-filament composite conductor and an insulating material or its precursor around a mandrel in order to form a coil, and then exposing the coil to high temperatures and an oxidizing environment. The insulating material or its precursor is chosen to permit exposure of the superconductor precursor filaments to the oxidizing environment, and to encase the matrix-forming material enclosing the filaments, which is reversibly weakened during processing.

Superconducing wind-and-react-coils and methods of manufacture

A high temperature superconductor lead assembly for reducing the heat leak into a cryocooled system features a shroud configured for at least partial submersion in a cryogenic fluid contained within a bath chamber, and a high temperature superconductor lead element at least partially contained within the shroud. In use, a portion of the high temperature superconductor lead element contained within the shroud extends below a fluid level of the cryogenic fluid in the bath chamber. The portion of the high temperature superconductor lead element is thermally shielded by the shroud such that it is maintained at a temperature higher than the temperature of the cryogenic fluid. The shroud is a double-walled vacuum structure with a sealed end and an open end. In use, the open end is submerged in the cryogenic fluid.

Thermally shielded superconductor current lead

The invention relates to a high-temperature superconductor lead element including a plurality of lengths of high-temperature superconductor electrically connected in a non-collinear configuration, for example, next to and parallel with each other, to increase the thermal length of the lead element. A proximal end of a first of the lengths is configured for thermal connection to a warm thermal element and a distal end of a last of the lengths is configured for thermal connection to a cold thermal element. Each length of high-temperature superconductor includes a high-temperature superconductor plate having an electrically insulative support and a plurality of high-temperature superconductor tapes mounted, in a linear array, on the support. A plurality of high-temperature superconductor plates are arranged with their longitudinal axis parallel to form a cylindrical lead with 'bad' self-fields in each plate being substantially cancelled by self-fields in neighboring plates.

A high temperature superconductor lead assembly for reduces the heat leak into a cryocooled magnet system includes a superconductor and a first lead connector bonded to a first end of the superconductor. The lead connector includes an electrically insulating, thermally conductive ceramic mount for attachment to a mechanical cryocooler for cooling the connector. The superconductor is in the form of a stack of ribbons. The superconductor is attached to an electrically and thermally insulating support. A cryocooled magnet system includes a mechanical cryocooler having a warm end and a cold end, a superconductor magnet maintained at a temperature of the cold end of the cryocooler, two superconductor leads, and two current carrying leads for supplying power to the superconductor leads.

Double pancake coils include a pair of pancake coils of different outer dimensions, and are wound from the same continuous length of superconducting wire. The double pancake coils are coaxially positioned and electrically interconnected along a longitudinal axis to provide a multi-coil superconducting magnetic coil assembly. Each of the double pancakes has at least one of its pancake coils electrically connected to at least another pancake coil of an adjacent double pancake coil having substantially the same outer dimension. The electrical connections between adjacent pancake coils are provided with relatively straight or 'unbent' segments of superconducting wire even though the outer dimension profile of the superconducting magnetic coil assembly along its longitudinal axis varies.

Shaped superconducting magnetic coil

An actuator in which a magnetostrictor is subjected to magnetic fields produced by a superconducting coil, and the magnetostrictor and coil are maintained at temperatures below the magnetic transition temperature of the magnetostrictor and the superconducting temperature of the coil, typically at temperatures in the range of about 4 to about 130 degrees Kelvin. The magnetostrictor is a laminated Terbium Dysprosium (TbDy) alloy structure and the coil includes high temperature superconducting oxide material. The laminations of the TbDy structure are mechanically loaded in compression and each has a thickness substantially equal less than or equal to the depth of field penetration, and a cooler maintains both the TbDy and superconductor at their optimum temperatures.
