A mammographic imaging system is optimized for use with a single fixed size flat panel digital image receptor. It accommodates compression devices (paddles) of varying sizes, and positions them properly in a field of view of the image receptor. When a compression paddle with size smaller than the field of view of the image receptor is used, the compression paddle can be shifted laterally in the direction parallel to the chest wall, so as to facilitate different views of different size breasts, and permit the image receptor to image as much of the desired tissue as passible. An automatic X-ray collimator restricts the X-ray illumination of the breast in accordance with the compression paddle size and location in the field of view. An anti-scatter grid, mounted inside the image receptor enclosure, just below the top cover of the enclosure, can be retracted out of the field of view of the image receptor for use in magnification imaging.

An X-ray therapy system with equipment for reducing risk that the radiation applied to a patient is other than what is intended. A radiation check is made in which a signal indicative of the radiation to be applied is compared with a reference signal, and/or a configuration check is made using sensors to automatically sense the applicator being used to apply the radiation to the patient.

A radiation therapy system is provided having a radiation source for providing radiation for treating a patient, including treating skin cancer, wherein the radiation source features a filtering device that changes its filtering characteristic for filtering the radiation for treating the patient in response to a control signal. The filtering device includes two filters and a radiation blocker circumferentially arranged on a cylindrical member. The filtering characteristic is changed by rotating the filtering device in response to the control signal. The filtering device includes a driving unit for rotating the filtering device in response to the control signal in order to change its filtering characteristic, such as a motor with a gearing arrangement for coupling to a corresponding gearing arrangement on the filtering device. In this embodiment, the means for providing the radiation, i.e. the x-ray tube, is arranged inside the filtering device.

Air cross grids, for absorbing scattered secondary radiation and improving radiation imaging in general radiography and in mammography, are provided with a large plurality of open air passages extending through each grid panel. These passages are defined by two large pluralities of substantially parallel partition walls, respectively extending transverse to each other. Each grid panel is made by laminating a plurality of thin metal foil sheets photo-etched to create through openings defined by partition segments. The etched sheets are aligned and bonded to form the laminated grid panel, which is moved edgewise during the radiation exposure to pass primary radiation through the air passages while absorbing scattered secondary radiation arriving along slanted paths.

An imaging device for producing images from electron-hole producing radiation. Electron-hole pairs are produced in a radiation absorbing layer comprised of a photoconductive material. This layer covers an array of metal oxide semiconductor pixel circuits which are incorporated into and on a crystalline semiconductor substrate. Each pixel circuit has a charge collecting pixel electrode, a capacitor connected to the electrode to store the charges and a charge measuring transistor circuit. A voltage source provides an electric field across the radiation absorbing layer between the pixel electrodes and a radiation transparent surface electrode covering the radiation absorbing layer. A data acquisition system acquires and stores data derived from charge measurements and in a preferred embodiment a computer computes images from the data. The image may be displayed on a monitor or printed out on a printer. Preferred embodiments provide images from x-ray, ultraviolet and visible light.
