A water or fluid-cooled device consists of a plurality of exhaust tubes of uniform cross-section, similar to the tubes in a boiler. The tubes are connected to an elongate combustion chamber into which a combustible mixture is aspirated via one or a series a non-return valves. The fuel is initially ignited, and subsequently follows the conventional pattern for pulsating combustion. This pulsating combustion burner can be used as an instrument for making a series of shockwaves at a frequency of oscillation between 200 and 2000 Hz, and thus can be used in the conditioning of fine dust particles by agglomerating them. An alternate use is that of a burner for a boiler or a space heater, where suitable action is taken to silence the exhaust noise, and where the scrubbing action of the generated shockwaves inside the exhaust tubes improves the heat transfer to the surrounding medium by minimizing the laminar surface film or 'stagnant layer' inside and outside the exhaust tubes.

Pulsating combustion device

A process is described for the flash pyrolysis of a high rank caking coal in a pyrolysis chamber in which the coal passes through a tacky state during flash pyrolysis. According to the novel feature, before entering the pyrolysis chamber, the particles of high rank caking coal are blended with a diluent comprising a finely ground non-caking coal, whereby agglomeration and caking of the high rank coal is prevented during flash pyrolysis.

Flash hydropyrolysis of bituminous coal

A method for the prevention of and the treatment for epicondylalgia externa, popularly known as tennis elbow, is disclosed. The method involves the absorption and dissipation of the vibrational shocks caused by the off-centre hitting of a tennis ball during pronation and supination of the wrist by use of a vibration absorbing pad fluid containing device covering either the extensor or flexor muscles of the forearm. The pad is shaped to conform with the extensor of flexor muscle in the forearm, is filled with a viscous fluid or semi-fluid which will flow enough to maintain a close contact with the muscle from wrist to elbow. The viscous fluid has a thermal conductivity of less than 0.1 W/(m..degree. C.).

Heat Pod Body Muscle Treatment Device

A method and device for the prevention of and the treatment for epicondylalgia externa, popularly known as tennis elbow, is disclosed. The method involves the absorption and dissipation of the vibrational shocks caused by the off-center hitting of a tennis ball during pronation and supination of the wrist. The device employs a vibration absorbing pad covering either the extensor or flexor muscles of the forearm. The pad is tightly located against the said muscles by means of an elastic tube from the wrist area to the elbow. An elastic strap, located outside the aforementioned tube around the largest diameter of the forearm and fastened by Velcro or like fasteners, is an additional member for maintaining the pad in close contact with the arm surface. The aforementioned pad, shaped to conform with the extensor or flexor muscle in the forearm, is filled with a viscous fluid or semi-fluid which will flow enough to maintain a close contact with the muscle from wrist to elbow. The viscous fluid absorbs the surface vibrations caused by the off-center striking of a ball with a racquet. These vibrations are normally conducted along the extensor or flexor muscles of the forearm and are a direct cause of the inflammation of the elbow itself. The pad also may be employed as a passive heating pad for the heat treatment of muscle tissue. In this embodiment, the viscous material has a thermal conductivity of less than 0.1 W/(m..degree.C.

Surface vibration absorbing strap

There is provided a magneto-hydrodynamic generator which utilizes pulsating combustion. The generator has a central combustion chamber and a radial expansion chamber annularly surrounding the combustion chamber and communicating with it. The expansion chamber is defined between two opposing walls. A combustible fuel mixture is introduced into the combustion chamber and pulsating combustion is initiated in the combustion chamber, so that gas flow in the expansion chamber fluctuates with time. Means are provided for ionizing gas in the expansion chamber, and further means are provided for applying an external magnetic field to the expansion chamber. Finally, electrically conductive means are provided for extracting electrical power from the ionized fluctuating gas flow in the expansion chamber.

Disc-shaped M.H.D. generator

A sonic liquid atomizing device having a body member with a concave face and a resonator spaced from the face. An air nozzle projects through an opening in the face to form an annular aperture about the nozzle and an inlet for liquid connects with the annular aperture. The nozzle carries an axial stem on which the resonator is mounted and the nozzle is adjustable axially to vary the area of the annular aperture. The nozzle is tapered and its conical projection terminates on the axis of the stem between the resonator and a point one third of the distance between the resonator and the nozzle.

Sonic liquid atomizer

A method and apparatus for the treatment of fabric materials with a liquid finishing agent such as a liquid repellant is disclosed. The method involves passing a strip of the fabric through a bath of the liquid finishing agent across a stationary fabric contacting surface. In the preferred embodiment, the fabric is subjected to ultra-sonic energy while immersed in the bath at a power level and frequency such that cavitation occurs in the bath adjacent the submerged material.

Fabric treatment with ultrasound

This invention provides a fluid shear device for emulsifying or mixing liquids, and also useful for deaeration. A central chamber with a tangential inlet has a forward wall perpendicular to the chamber axis and a rearward wall with a reverse curve in profile such that the rearward wall is more parallel to the forward wall in its outer portion than its inner portion. This produces a number of advantages in terms of pressure energy released, which energy is then available for the shearing and mixing function.

Fluid shear emulsifier

There is provided an apparatus for purifying liquid such as water, in which an ultraviolet light source irradiates air passing through a first chamber surrounding the source, and then irradiates the liquid passing through the second chamber surrounding the first chamber. The air from the first chamber is ozonated by the U.V. light, and this air is bubbled into the water in the second chamber to maximize the purification through simultaneous ultraviolet and ozone exposure.

Ozone/ultraviolet water purifier

The ultraviolet sensing device disclosed herein employs a visible light sensitive photoconductive cell which is protected from direct exposure to ultraviolet light by a housing. Ultraviolet light entering the housing through a quartz window illuminates a fluorescent material and the photoconductive cell is oriented so as to receive visible light given off by the fluorescent material while being shielded from the direct ultraviolet rays.
