Systems and other embodiments associated with synthetic instrumentation are presented. A reconfigurable synthetic instrumentation unit comprises an input module, with dual input/output ports and conditioning logic to condition an input signal. An RF down converter selectively down converts the conditioned input signal. A sampled RF down converter selectively samples the conditioned input signal. A pair of narrowband A/D converters are configured to convert one of the conditioned signal, the down converted signal and the sampled signal to produce a narrowband digital signal. A pair of broadband A/D converters convert at least one of the conditioned signal, the down converted signal and the sampled signal to produce a broadband digital signal. Signal processing logic selectively performs digital signal processing on the broadband digital signal or the narrow band digital signal.

Synthetic instrument unit

A system and method for clocking in analog-to-digital (ADC) converter in a synthetic instrument unit is presented. A method begins by applying an input clock to an amplifier to produce an amplified clock. The amplified clock is filtered to produce a filtered clock. The ADC of this synthetic instrument unit is clocked with the filtered clock. The input frequency of the ADC corresponds to a second or higher order Nyquist zone that is above the sampling frequency of the ADC. The input data is carried by an intermediate frequency (IF) signal. The filtered clock of ADC is switched off a clock path of the ADC when the ADC is not in use.

Proper frequency planning in a synthetic instrument RF system

A filter comprising a plurality resonator stages between sequentially coupled between input and output ports. The resonator stages are arranged such that at least one non-sequential pair of stages are physically adjacent. The non-sequential pair of resonator stages are separated by a common internal wall, which defines a bypass coupling aperture therebetween. During operation of the filter, attenuation poles are formed in the filter response due to bypass coupling between the non-sequential pair of resonator stages through the bypass coupling aperture. The preferred U-shaped arrangement of the resonator stages enables the formation of attenuation poles, without using an external bypass connection, by permitting inductive or capacitive bypass coupling through the bypass aperture.

Dielectric filter having intrinsic inter-resonator coupling

A voltage controlled oscillator comprises more than one dissimilar diode. The dissimilar diodes have different capacitance versus voltage characteristic shapes. The dissimilarity causes the tuning gain factor of the resulting oscillator to be an increasing function of increasing frequency. Such an oscillator when properly incorporated into a phase lock loop can yield loop parameters which are a constant function of increasing frequency.
