A fluorine-containing graft copolymer is made from a backbone of an olefin polymer material to which is graft polymerized (a) at least one gaseous fluorinated monomer such as vinylidene fluoride, (b) at least one fluorinated acrylic acid or ester, (c) a mixture of (a) and (b), or (d) a mixture of (a) and/or (b) and a non-fluorinated monomer such as methyl methacrylate. An organic peroxide or a polymeric peroxide is used as the initiator for the graft polymerization process. The graft copolymers have improved surface properties and oxygen barrier properties, and improved thermal stability.

Polyolefin graft copolymers made with fluorinated monomers

A three-layer, co-extruded tube has (1) an inner polyamide layer, (2) a middle layer made from (a) a modified polylefin, (b) a broad molecular weight distribution propylene polymer material, (c) a graft copolymer made from a backbone of propylene polymer material to which is grafted a methyl methacrylate/methyl acrylate copolymer or a methyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid copolymer, and (d) an olefin copolymer rubber, and (3) an outer layer made from (a) a broad molecular weight distributation propylene polymer material, (b) a graft copolymer made from a backbone of propylene polymer material to which is grafted a methyl methacrylate/methyl acrylate copolymer or a methyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid copolymer, and (c) an olefin copolymer rubber. The tubing is suitable for fuel systems, high pressure tubing, and other tubing for automotive applications.

Co-extruded, multi-layer tubing made from polyamide and olefin polymer materials

A polymer blend containing (1) about 1% to about 98% of a graft copolymer comprising a backbone of a propylene polymer material having graft polymerized thereto monomers selected from (a) at least one vinyl aromatic compound and an unsaturated carboxylic acid and b) at least one vinyl aromatic compound and an anhydride of an unsaturated acid or its acid form, wherein the polymerized monomers are present in an amount of about 10 to about 95 parts per hundred parts of the propylene polymer material, (2) about 99% to about 2% of at least one polyamide resin, and (3) about 5% to about 90% of a broad molecular weight distribution propylene polymer material. The composition optionally also contains about 2% to about 30% of one or more rubber components, and an additive to improve the scratch and mar resistance of the composition.

Polyolefin graft copolymer/polymide blend

A co-extruded polyolefin laminate having a hard, high modulus top layer includes at least one layer of a graft copolymer made from a propylene polymer material onto which is graft polymerized acrylic and/or styrenic monomers and at least one other layer made from a propylene homopolymer, a random propylene copolymer, a random propylene terpolymer, an olefin polymer composition, a thermoplastic olefin, a heterophasic olefin composition, or combinations of two or more of these polymers or polymer compositions, optionally blended with a high melt strength propylene polymer material. Composite materials including at least one layer of the co-extruded laminate and, for example, a low density polyolefin foam layer, can be used to make large structural parts by conventional means such as thermoforming.

Co-extruded laminate comprising at least one propylene graft copolymer layer

A graft copolymer containing anhydride groups is made by (1) making a graft copolymer comprising a backbone of a propylene polymer material having graft polymerized thereto polymerized monomers selected from the group consisting of (a) at least one acrylic acid substituted with a 1-3 C alkyl group and (b) a mixture of at least one of these substituted acrylic acids and a vinyl compound capable of copolymerizing therewith, wherein the total amount of polymerized monomers is about 20 parts to about 240 parts per hundred parts of the propylene polymer material and the amount of the substituted acrylic acid is 60 mole % or more of the polymerized monomers, and (2) heating the graft copolymer to a temperature of about 170.degree. C. to about 300.degree. C. to dehydrate the acid groups in the graft copolymer to form anhydride groups.

Process for making polypropylene graft copolymers containing anhydride

A graft copolymer comprising a backbone of a propylene polymer material having a vinyl monomer graft polymerized thereto is produced by (1) treating a propylene polymer material with a free radical polymerization initiator, (2) treating the propylene polymer material with at least one grafting monomer capable of being polymerized by free radicals, and (3) removing any unreacted grafting monomer from the graft copolymerized propylene polymer material, decomposing any unreacted initiator, and deactivating any residual free radicals in the material, wherein (1) and (2) are carried out in the presence of a continuous feed of nitric oxide. The nitric oxide reduces the build-up of polymer deposits on reactor walls and gas circulation loops while having almost no effect on the graft copolymerization reaction.

Using nitric oxide to reduce reactor fouling during polypropylene graft

A graft copolymer of a propylene polymer material is prepared by (1) making an oxidized propylene polymer material by (a) irradiating a porous particulate propylene polymer material in the substantial absence of oxygen, (b) exposing the irradiated propylene polymer material to a controlled amount of oxygen of greater than 0.004% but less than 15% by volume at a temperature of 40.degree. C. to 110.degree. C., and (c) heating the irradiated polymer material to a temperature of at least 110.degree. C. in the presence of a controlled amount of oxygen within the same range as is used in the previous step, (2) dispersing the resulting oxidized propylene polymer material in water in the presence of a surfactant at a temperature of 30.degree. C.-90.degree. C., (3) adding (a) a primary reducing agent, (b) a chelating agent, and (c) a secondary reducing agent, (4) adding at least one vinyl monomer, and (5) recovering the graft copolymer from the reaction mixture.

Process for making propylene graft copolymers using a redox initiator

Disclosed is a normally solid, high molecular weight, gel-free, amorphous to predominantly crystalline, propylene polymer characterized by high melt strength due to strain hardening which is believed to be caused by free-end long chain branches of the molecular chains forming the polymer. Also disclosed is a process for making the polymer by high energy radiation of a normally solid, high molecular weight, linear, propylene polymer in a reduced active oxygen environment, maintaining the irradiated material in such environment for a specific period of time, and then deactivating free radicals in the material. Further disclosed is the use of the strain hardening polymer in extensional flow operations such as, for example, extrusion coating, film production, and thermoforming.

High melt strength, propylene polymer, process for making it, and use

Disclosed are graft copolymers of polyolefins and a method of preparing the graft copolymers. The method includes irradiating a mass of olefin polymer particles and thereafter treating the mass of particles with a vinyl monomer in liquid form. A nonoxidizing environment is maintained throughout the process while free radicals produced in the olefin polymer by the irradiation are present, thereby preventing degradation of the polymer. In a final step, residual free radicals are deactivated, and any unreacted monomer is removed.

Graft copolymers of polyolefins and a method of producing same

Disclosed is a normally solid, high molecular weight, non-linear, substantially gel-free, propylene polymer material characterized by high melt strength due to strain hardening which is believed to be caused by free-end long chain branches of the molecular chains forming the polymer. Also disclosed is a process for making the polymer by high energy radiation of a normally solid, high molecular weight, linear, propylene polymer in a reduced active oxygen environment, maintaining the irradiated material in such environment for a specific period of time, and then deactivating free radicals in the material. Further disclosed is the use of the strain hardening polymer in extensional flow operations such as, for example, extrusion coating, film production, foaming and thermoforming.

Foamed articles comprising high melt strength propylene polymer material

Disclosed is a composition comprising, by weight, (a) about 94% to about 30% of a graft copolymer comprising a backbone of a propylene polymer material having graft polymerized thereto monomers that form grafted copolymers or terpolymers, the monomers being selected from the group consisting of (i) styrene and acrylonitrile, and (ii) styrene and maleic anhydride, or alpha-methylstyrene, styrene and maleic anhydride, wherein the grafted copolymers or terpolymers formed from (i) or (ii) are present in an amount of about 10 to about 95 pph of propylene polymer material, (b) about 5% to about 40% of at least one aromatic polycarbonate, and (c) about 1% to about 15% of at least one aliphatic polyester. The composition optionally also comprises about 5% to about 20% of one or more rubber components, about 1% to about 50% of a propylene polymer material, or both.

Blends of polyolefin graft copolymers and polycarbonate

A normally solid, high molecular weight, gel-free, irradiated ethylene polymer is characterized by high melt strength due to strain hardening elongational viscosity, which is believed to be caused by free-end long chain branching of the molecular chains forming the polymer. The polymer is prepared by (1) irradiating a normally solid, high molecular weight ethylene polymer without strain hardening elongational viscosity while in the solid state in an environment in which the active oxygen concentration is less than 15% by volume, maintaining the irradiated material in this environment while in the solid state for a specific period of time, and then deactivating free radicals present in the material.
