The present invention describes a method for curing polymers and polymer composites with X-rays generated by the bremsstrahlung effect, using a high power, high energy electron beam. The process generates X-rays with sufficient throughput and penetration for commercial use. The present invention employs high power, high energy electron beams to create the X-rays. The beams are typically run at energies ranging from 1 MeV to 10 MeV, preferably from 3 MeV to 10 MeV, and more preferably from 5 MeV to 7 MeV. The beams typically have powers ranging from 30 kW or higher, preferably 80 kW or higher, more preferably 100 kW of higher, and ideally at least 200 kW. Suitable polymers and polymer composites include, but are not limited to, polymeric molding materials, fiber reinforced molding materials, reactive monomer impregnated wood, similar and dissimilar materials bonded through adhesives.

Processes for chemically affecting reactive materials with X-rays

Radiation curable coating compositions that are solventless homogeneous blends of a 1,2-polybutadiene oligomer, an acrylated bis-phenol-A derivative, and reactive compatible compounds are disclosed. Such solventless coatings can be used in a variety of applications, including the high speed coating of metal coil.

Acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives which exhibit hydrophilicity and moisture permeability can be made by curing or crosslinking low molecular weight acrylic oligomers modified with substantial quantities of a hydroxyl containing monomer. The resultant modified pressure sensitive adhesive acrylic copolymers, upon crosslinking, will then have a hydrophilic hydroxy component incorporated into the copolymer backbone. Such adhesives are particularly useful in skin contact applications, such as the adhesives used on bandages or the adhesives used in transdermal drug delivery systems.

Hydrophilic acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives

Electrically conductive adhesive material possessing good adhesive, cohesive, elastomeric and conductive properties is disclosed. The present adhesive material also has improved electrical stability since it is less susceptible to drying out in most ambients. The material comprises a plasticizer, a high molecular weight water-soluble polymer, uncrosslinked polyvinylpyrrolidone as the tackifier, and an electrolyte dopant.

Electrically conductive adhesive materials

Hot melt compositions comprising a mixture of an adhesive ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer having a melt index of 700 to 10000 and containing from 9 to 40% vinyl acetate in combination with an olefin rubber exhibit excellent adhesive properties. The resulting blends have good elevated temperature resistance; outstanding low temperature flexibility, excellent adhesion to a wide variety of surfaces and markedly reduced melt viscosities at the application temperature.

Thermoplastic adhesive compositions such as hot melts containing conventional components are improved considerably by the inclusion of acid or acid derivative grafted polyolefins particularly acrylic acid-grafted polypropylene, polyethylene and/or ethylene-propylene polymer substances. Alternatively, novel adhesive compositions are prepared in which the polyolefin constituent is entirely a grafted polyolefin.
