A spinal fixation system includes a rod and anchor devices that include a bone engaging fastener having a head defining a spherical socket. A ball insert is placed within the socket and rotated so that the ball insert is juxtaposed with the socket. The anchor device further includes a yoke defining a yoke channel for receiving the rod and a stem engaged to the ball insert captured within the socket. A sleeve disposed between the yoke channel and the fastener head supports the rod. A set screw is operable to clamp the rod against the sleeve and draw the insert into engagement within the socket. A releasable detent defined between the yoke and the fastener head is configured to releasably retain the yoke in at least one discrete position relative to the fastener. Portions of the releasable detent may also exert a frictional retention force against the fastener head.

Multi-axial spinal fixation system

A spinal fixation system includes a rod and anchor devices that include a bone engaging fastener having a head defining a spherical socket. A ball insert is placed within the socket and rotated so that the ball insert is juxtaposed with the socket. The anchor device further includes a yoke defining a yoke channel for receiving the rod and a stem engaged to the ball insert captured within the socket. A sleeve disposed between the yoke channel and the fastener head supports the rod. A set screw is operable to clamp the rod against the sleeve and draw the insert into engagement within the socket. A friction element in the form of a wave spring is disposed between the yoke and the fastener head is configured to releasably retain the yoke in at least one discrete position relative to the fastener.

Anchor device for anchoring an elongated rod to the spine

A bone plate system for fixation of bone includes a bone plate and a first fastener. The bone plate includes a bone contacting surface, an upper surface, and a first opening extending between the bone contacting surface and the upper surface. The first opening includes a lower portion, a non-threaded upper portion, and a threaded portion. The threaded portion includes threads and converges towards the lower portion. The lower portion includes a smallest diameter of the first opening. The first fastener includes a head at least partially comprising a spherical portion and a first material. When the first fastener is inserted into the first opening, the threads of the first opening form threads in the first material on the head of the first fastener to secure the first fastener in place at one of a plurality of possible angles within the first opening.

Bone plate and bone plate assemblies including polyaxial fasteners

A cross connector for attachment between two spinal implants comprises a first element having one end and an opposite end configured for engaging one of the two spinal implants, a second element having one end and an opposite end configured for engaging the other of the two spinal implants, an engagement mechanism between the one end of each of the first and second elements, and a locking element for locking the two elements together at the respective one end. The engagement mechanism includes an interface configured to permit relative pivoting between the first element and the second element about at least two non-parallel axes.

Multi-axial cross connector

A method and assembly is provided for linking an additional vertebral construct to an existing spinal construct having at least two bone screws engaged to corresponding vertebrae and connected by a connecting member. The assembly includes a fastener configured to engage a bone screw of the existing construct and to engage a connecting member connected to the bone screw. The assembly further includes a linking member having an elongated portion configured to connect to a bone screw of the additional construct and a mounting structure configured for mounting on the bone screw of the existing construct. A locking member fixes the orientation of the linking member relative to the bone screw and a clamping member locks the linking member and existing connecting member to the bone screw of the existing construct.

Devices and methods for adding an additional level of fixation to an existing construct

The present application relates to a sensing system for an medical device, the sensing system having at least one sensor for measuring movement of the medical device and a recording device for storing movement data from the at least one sensor. The application also relates to a method for evaluating a patient's compliance with a healing regimen, the patient provided with a medical device, the method having the steps of a) collecting movement data relating to movement of a sensing system affixed within, to, or near the medical device; b) retrieving the movement data from the sensing system; and c) analyzing the movement data and comparing the movement data to standard movement data to evaluate the patient's compliance with the healing regimen.

Cycle and load measurement device

Apparatuses and methods for externally fixing and precisely adjusting fractures, such as fractures near the ankle, are disclosed. In one embodiment, an external fixation apparatus includes a first member attachable to a first bone segment through pins, a second member coupled to the first member through a lockable ball joint, wherein first and second ends of the second member may be translated transversely relative to a longitudinal axis of the second member, and a pin clamp coupled to and rotatable about the second member through a lockable joint and attachable to a second bone segment. The pin clamp and the second member may be releasably coupled.

External fixation apparatus and method

Systems, devices and methods are disclosed for treating fractures. The systems, devices and methods may include one or both of an implant, such as an intramedullary nail, and a fastening assembly, such as a lag screw and compression screw assembly. The implant in some embodiments has a proximal section with a transverse aperture and a cross-section that may be shaped to more accurately conform to the anatomical shape of cortical bone and to provide additional strength and robustness in its lateral portions, preferably without requiring significant additional material. The fastening assembly may be received to slide, in a controlled way, in the transverse aperture of the implant. In some embodiments, the engaging member and the compression device are configured so that the compression device interacts with a portion of the implant and a portion of the engaging member to enable controlled movement between the first and second bone fragments. This configuration is useful for, among other things, compressing a fracture.

Orthopaedic implant and fastening assembly

A spinal fixation system includes an elongated rod sized to extend between at least two vertebrae and a number of anchor devices for anchoring the rod to the spine. The anchor devices include a bone engaging fastener having a head defining a spherical socket. A ball insert is configured to be placed within the socket and rotated so that a spherical surface of the ball insert is juxtaposed with the spherical surface of the socket. The insert has a first dimension less than the socket opening and a second dimension that upon rotation causes the insert to be captively retained in the socket. The anchor device further includes a yoke defining a yoke channel for receiving the rod and including a stem that is engaged to the ball insert when the insert is captured within the socket. A sleeve is disposed between the yoke channel and the fastener head for supporting the rod thereon. A set screw is threaded into the yoke channel for clamping the rod against the sleeve. The set screw further operates to draw the ball insert into clamped engagement within the socket.

A system for fixation of bone, including a bone plate with an opening comprising threads made of a first material and a fastener with a head at least partially comprising a polymeric material that is softer than the first material. In some embodiments, when the fastener is inserted into the first opening, the threads of the first opening form threads in the polymeric material on the head of the fastener and secure the fastener in place at one of a plurality of possible angles within the first opening. The first opening additionally accepts a fastener with a substantially spherical head for compression of a fracture, or a fastener with a threaded head that engages with the threads of the threaded opening. In some embodiments the first opening includes a substantially frustoconical-shaped top portion. In other embodiments there may be a second opening that is either non-threaded or comprises a plurality of protruding fins.
