Pouches are provided to the user of an automated pouch handling apparatus in a pouch container. The pouches are oriented the same way in the box. The box may be sealed to prevent pouch contamination. A door on the box is opened or removed to define a door opening. A portion of the pouch stack is accessible through the opening. These pouch containers may be stacked near a pouch handling apparatus where the operator may open the door and load the pouch containers directly into the pouch handling apparatus. The pouch handling apparatus removes the pouches directly from the pouch container through the door opening. The apparatus may include a pouch separator that bends the edge of the pouch out through the door and slides the first pouch away from the second pouch.

Method for removing a pouch from a pouch container

A method and apparatus for removing the first pouch from a stack of pouches includes apparatus adapted to bend an edge of the first pouch away from the second pouch of a stack to define a bent edge and a bend in the first pouch. The first pouch is then slid away from the second pouch to remove the first pouch from the plurality of adjacent pouches. This method allows the first pouch to be reliably separated from the second pouch by overcoming the various forces that typically cause adjacent pouches to cling to each other while stacked together.

A sealable bag for storing merchandise includes a body having a pocket that is adapted to receive the merchandise. The pocket has an opening through which merchandise is placed into the pocket. The body has a pair of flanges disposed along the sides of the body. The body has a neck with the opening of the pocket being disposed at the neck of the body. The neck has a sealing area. The bag includes a pair of stress relief notches disposed in the flanges intermediate the sealing area and the opening of the pocket. Each stress relief notch extends into the neck of the body. The stress relief notches prevent the sealing area from becoming wrinkled while the bag is being sealed with automated equipment thus allowing a clean, unwrinkled seal to be formed in the bag.

Sealable bag

A sealable bag for storing merchandise includes a body having a pocket that is adapted to receive the merchandise. The pocket has an opening through which merchandise is placed into the pocket. The body has a pair of flanges disposed along the sides of the body. The body has a neck with the opening of the pocket being disposed at the neck of the body. The neck has a sealing area. The bag includes a pair of stress relief notches disposed in the flanges intermediate the sealing area and the opening of the pocket. The stress relief notches prevent the sealing area from becoming wrinkled while the bag is being sealed with automated equipment thus allowing a clean, unwrinkled seal to be formed in the bag.

A bagging machine is disclosed having a frame including an upright section in the shape of an inverted 'Y' mounted on the base and forming a forward part of the frame, a generally horizontal 'Y' shaped section extending rearwardly from the upright section and, supports interposed between the base and the horizontal section. The frame defines a pair of web supply stations and supports a mirror image pair of load station assemblies each positioned to receive webs from an associated supply station. Each of the assemblies includes a backing plate and an air knife for delivering air to establish an air film between the plate and a web. An accumulator diverter is disclosed having an inlet and a pair of outlets each positioned above a respectively associated one of the load stations. The disclosure further includes a conveyor for supplying products to the diverter and the conveyer and diverter including coacting means to establish a time delay between the supply of one product and the supply of a successive product. An imprinter support and a fluid tight imprinter enclosure are also disclosed as are methods of operation.

A packaging machine and method of packaging utilizing chains of interconnected preopened bags which are fed sequentially and one at a time to a load station. Bag tops are clamped against spreading horns by sensor equipped clamps which cause disablement of a bag filling mechanism unless a bag is properly located at the load station. The horns include mirror image subassemblies each including stationary and moveable sections. Each subassembly includes a prime mover interposed between the sections to relatively move the sections between collapsed and bag extending positions.

The method includes both the steps of expelling air and compacting the contents and the step of allowing the differential escape of oxygen from a package while retaining nitrogen therein.
