A dashboard application can enable a user to quickly view data (and, in a particular aspect, data from one or more business applications) in an efficient manner. The dashboard application can be used to view data about one or more metrics that reflect the performance of a business, as derived from data maintained (perhaps in an associated data store) by the business application(s). In an aspect, a user can select two or more metrics to be displayed on a summary page and/or can invoke a detail page to view detailed information about one of the two or more metrics.

Configurable metric groups for presenting data to a user

The dashboard application can be used to view data about one or more metrics that reflect the performance of a business, as derived from data maintained (perhaps in an associated data store) by the business application(s). The dashboard application can provide the ability to select a level of granularity at which data should be displayed and/or filtered for display.

Drill down functionality in a dashboard application

Multi-dimensioned data hierarchies

Novel tools for updating data structures in a database are presented. In an aspect, the tools are used to update a database's structures in response to the update of an application (such as an enterprise application) that uses the database. In another aspect, the tools may convert a data set to a new format when the updated application attempts to access the data set; in some cases, other data sets within the database might remain unconverted until their use. Advantageously, this allows for a database (and/or a table within a database) to be updated incrementally and/or on demand. This feature can mitigate the impact of the update on users, for example, by avoiding the need to take the database (and/or application) offline to perform a batch process to update the database.
