An electronic protection system includes an electronic protection IC, mains power lines including a line rail and a neutral rail, a power switch, and a current sense device. A load is coupled with the mains power lines via the power switch and the current sense device. The electronic protection circuit turns off the power switch within eighty (80) milliseconds from a zero crossing in power delivered by the mains power lines when a load current is too high. A dummy DAC supplies a dummy current to prevent instability resulting from positive feedback during a change between a first state and a second state. The system may include an overcurrent detection circuit with a sense input, a comparator, a latch, and a pulse generator, configured to output a train of pulses with a low duty cycle when a current amplitude exceeds a reference value.

Electronic circuit for overcurrent protection

A protection IC protects an external load connected to mains supply lines from dangerous or undesired conditions such as overvoltage, undervoltage, and overcurrent, by disconnecting the external load for at least the duration of such a condition. The IC has a range detector, a zero-crossing detector, a control unit, a switch driver, and a dummy DAC. The range detector senses the presence of an unwanted condition. The control unit then waits for a zero crossing, upon which it disconnects the load. A lockout timer may introduce a minimum wait time before reconnecting the load. To prevent instabilities around the switching points, hysteresis in the window thresholds prevents impact from noise. The dummy DAC regulates a dummy current that linearizes the IC's current consumption around the switching points to prevent instabilities caused by positive feedback in non-linear transitions.

Electronic protection circuit with instability prevention

A drive circuit and a method for maintaining an operating state of the drive circuit. The drive circuit includes a capacitor connected to an inverting input terminal of an operational amplifier and to a terminal of a current sensitive load through a switch. The output of the operational amplifier is connected to a switching regulator which has an output terminal connected to another terminal of the current sensitive load. An energy storage element is connected to the inverting input terminal of the operational amplifier. Energy is stored in the energy storage element during a first portion of a PWM pulse which is used during a second portion of the PWM pulse to generate the error signal. A drive signal is generated from the error signal where the drive signal is used to generate a voltage that biases the current source during the second portion of the PWM pulse.

Circuit having sample and hold feedback control and method

A LED driver IC includes a control module(s) for controlling one or more LED drive parameters and non-volatile memory for storing settings data for that control module(s). The control module(s) is fully integrated into the LED driver IC and does not require any control input from off-chip components or signals. Therefore, the space requirements for LED circuits that make use of the LED driver IC can be minimized. Also, the non-volatile memory storage of settings data eliminates the need for an initialization or configuration input each time the LED driver IC is powered on. The non-volatile memory can be a one-time programmable memory or can be a reprogrammable memory.

LED driver with integrated bias and dimming control storage

According to some embodiments, a light emitting diode (LED) power management and diagnostics history recording integrated circuit includes a power management circuit controlling a supply of power to the LED, a diagnostics detection circuit recording a diagnostics history for the LED, a non-volatile diagnostics history memory storing the diagnostics history; and an external interface for transferring externally the diagnostics history stored in the non-volatile diagnostics history memory. The diagnostics history includes diagnostics data for at least two sequential occurrences of a reoccurring fault condition. The diagnostics data may include temperature, under-voltage, over-voltage, open-circuit load, and short-circuit load indicators, among others. A diagnostics analysis system downloads the diagnostics data after a given operation period and performs maintenance decisions according to the diagnostics data. Such systems are particularly useful for diagnosing intermittent faults and/or faults in remotely-located systems, and making maintenance decisions accordingly.

Diagnostic and maintenance systems and methods for LED power management integrated circuits

A charge pump provides a programmable multiplication factor for generating an output voltage. A first output voltage may be generated by connecting a first plurality of N capacitors in a first plurality of (N+1) configurations. A second output voltage may be generated by connecting a second plurality of M capacitors in a second plurality of M+1 configurations. The first plurality of N capacitors and the second plurality of M capacitors have one or more capacitors in common. The integers M and N may be equal, although this is not required. The first plurality of configurations is different than the second plurality of configurations, thereby providing different multiplication factors for the first and second pluralities of configurations. In one embodiment, the first plurality of (N+1) configurations results in an output voltage of about 3/4&#xd7; an input voltage.

Programmable fractional charge pump for DC-DC converter

A charge pump provides a multiplication factor of &#x2154; by using a three-phase mode of operation. In a first mode, first and second capacitors are charged from an input voltage while a third capacitor drives the output voltage based on stored charge in the third capacitor. In a second mode, the output terminal is connected to the common node of the first and second capacitors. In a third mode, the voltage potential across the second capacitor is subtracted from the sum of the input voltage and the voltage potential across the first capacitor to generate the output voltage. Operated in this manner, the first, second, and third capacitors will provide the desired &#x2154;&#xd7; voltage multiplication. This relatively low multiplication factor can be beneficial in applications requiring 2.5V and 1.8V supplies for integrated circuits, particularly where the input voltage is provided by a lithium battery.

Fractional charge pump for step-down DC-DC converter

A step down switching regulator circuit that is particularly well-suited to drive high power LEDs includes a crossover conduction mode (XCM) control circuit that maintains operation at the crossover point between continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). This XCM operation provides an inductor current waveform that ramps up and down between zero and a desired maximum current. One or more comparators in the XCM control circuit can be used to control switching between the inductor current ramp up and ramp down phases. In this manner, complex feedback loop logic and PID controlled PWM signal generation logic can be avoided, and the need for external sense resistors and associated interface pins can be eliminated.

LED current bias control using a step down regulator

A charge pump provides a multiplication factor of 4/3 by using a three-phase mode of operation. In a first mode, first and second capacitors are charged from an input voltage while a third capacitor drives the output voltage based on stored charge in the third capacitor. In a second mode, the voltage potential across the first capacitor is added to the input voltage to generate the output voltage. In a third mode, the voltage potential across the first capacitor is subtracted from the sum of the input voltage and the voltage potential across the second capacitor to generate the output voltage. Operated in this manner, the first, second, and third capacitors will provide the desired 4/3&#xd7; voltage multiplication. This relatively low multiplication factor can be beneficial in applications such as white LED driver circuits, particularly where the input voltage is provided by a battery.

LED bias current control using adaptive fractional charge pump

An active termination circuit for clamping a signal on a transmission line in an electronic device is described. The active termination circuit is configured to clamp the signal on the transmission line to one of a first reference voltage level and a second reference voltage level. The active termination circuit includes a bottom clamping transistor having a bottom clamping transistor first node coupled to a transmission line at a transmission line node, a bottom clamping transistor second node coupled to a first potential, and a bottom clamping transistor control node coupled to a first bias voltage supply. The circuit also includes a top clamping transistor having a top clamping transistor first node coupled to the transmission line at the transmission line node, a top clamping transistor second node coupled to a second potential, and a top clamping transistor control node coupled to a second bias voltage supply. The circuit further includes a variable current source arranged to provide bias current as needed to only one or the other of the first bias voltage supply and the second bias voltage supply based upon the state of an input signal on the transmission line.

Method and apparatus for non-linear termination of a transmission line

A voltage source switching circuit having switches capable of switching between different voltage sources with reduced voltage drop levels is disclosed. A selected one of the different voltage levels is output to a peripheral circuit or supplied to internal circuitry. In one embodiment, the switches are FET devices.
