A method of retrofitting a gear box assembly with an emergency lubrication system includes removing plugs from visual inspection ports of a gearbox housing, removing a breather from a breather port of the gearbox housing, and installing jet plugs into the respective visual inspection ports and breather port, wherein each jet plug includes a respective jet tube.

A magnesium component of a rotary wing aircraft is provided including a groove including a first sidewall and a second sidewall arranged on opposing sides of a recessed opening. The first sidewall includes a deposit positioned adjacent the recessed opening. The deposit is formed by cold spraying one or more layers or powdered material within an area of the first sidewall from which material was removed.

Corrosion mitigation for gearbox

A gearbox housing of an aircraft includes a surface configured to contact with and support a load of a component of the aircraft such that the surface is susceptible to corrosion. The surface has an area from which a portion of material was removed. A structural deposit is formed by cold spraying one or more layers of powdered material within the area. The structural deposit is configured to share the load applied to the surface by the component.

Damage mitigation for gearbox

A component of a rotary wing aircraft is provided including a surface configured to contact another component of the rotary wing aircraft such that the surface is susceptible to corrosion and/or pitting. The surface has an area from which a portion of material was removed. A structural deposit is formed by cold spraying one or more layers of powdered material within the area. The structural deposit is configured to carry a load applied to the component.

A transmission system for a hybrid aircraft is driven by a plurality of driveshafts and drives a translational propulsion system. Each driveshaft is mounted to a pinion gear which mesh with an upper and lower counter-rotating gear. The upper and lower counter-rotating gears drive a respective upper and lower rotor shaft which powers a counter-rotating rotor system. A first angle is defined between a first and a second driveshaft while a second angle is defined between the second and a third driveshaft. The angle between the driveshafts are a whole number multiple of the formula: &thgr;&equals;(CP/R)*(180/&pgr;). By so angularly locating the driveshafts, proper meshing of the pinion gears and the upper and lower counter-rotating gears is assured and tolerances are less stringent as the support structure is effective designed around optimal location of the driveshafts for gear meshing rather than vice versa.

Transmission for a coaxial counter rotating rotor system

A helicopter rotor brake assembly for arresting rotational movement of a main rotor drive shaft, wherein the helicopter rotor brake assembly is mechanically interconnected with the main rotor drive shaft through a main transmission. The helicopter rotor brake assembly includes a brake disc rotatably mounted about an axis, wherein the brake disc is mechanically interconnected with the main transmission, and wherein the brake disc defines a plane substantially perpendicular to the axis. A bracket is provided for disposal in combination with the brake disc, and comprises a beam member defining a first end and a second end, a first arcuate member connected to the first end of the beam member and disposed substantially co-planar with the plane defined by the brake disc, and a second arcuate member connected to the second end of the beam member and disposed substantially co-planar with the plane defined by the brake disc. A first caliper subassembly is provided for connection to the first arcuate member, and a second caliper subassembly is provided for connection to the second arcuate member, wherein the first caliper subassembly and the second caliper subassembly are operable, in combination, to apply braking forces to the brake disc, and thereby ensuring an arrestation of rotational movement of the main rotor drive shaft.

Helicopter rotor brake assembly

A spacer (10) for a helicopter main rotor shaft (102) is mounted in combination with the main rotor shaft (102) and is operative to support the inner race (116) of the upper bearing assembly (110) of the main rotor shaft (102) and is concomitantly operative to restrain axial migration of the inner race (116). The spacer (10) comprises a body member (11) having a stepped configuration defined by an upper cylindrical segment (12) and a lower cylindrical segment (20) to accommodate the outer structural envelope of the main rotor shaft (102). The upper cylindrical segment (12) includes an upper annular collar (14), an intermediate annular collar (16), and a lower annular collar (18), and the lower cylindrical segment (20) includes an interface annular collar (22) and a bottom annular collar (24). Structural continuity between the upper and lower cylindrical segments (12, 20) is provided by the lower annular collar (18) and the interface annular collar (22 ) and a plurality of reaction spokes (30) that extend between the upper annular collar (14) and the bottom annular collar (24). The reaction spokes (30) react the bearing migration loading exerted by the inner race (116). The upper annular collar (14) includes an annular shoulder (26) that engages the inner race (116) of the upper bearing assembly (110) to support the inner race (116) and to concomitantly restrain axial migration thereof. The endface surface (24E) of the bottom annular collar (24) selectively abuttingly engages the endface of a planetary carrier (106) to support the spacer (10) in combination with the main rotor shaft (102). A plurality of flats (28) are formed on the inner surface of the bottom annular collar (24) in alignment with corresponding reaction spokes (30). The faces (28F) of the flats (28) provide the mechanical engagement between the spacer (10) and the main rotor shaft (102), and function as a pin joint to prevent bending motion of the main rotor shaft from being inducing loads into the spacer (10).

A transmission gearbox noise control system is operative during normal operations of a transmission system to effectively null temperature variations among selected localized areas of the transmission gearbox housing by utilizing oil jets for cooling/heating thereof, thereby reducing or eliminating differential thermal expansion effects or minor manufacturing errors among such localized areas wherein transmission vibration levels (noise) emanating from the gearbox are abated. The system includes one or more metering valves, a spray rod mounted in combination with each metering valve, an oil reservoir, a fluid pathway for fluidically interconnecting each metering valve to the oil reservoir, at least one pump for circulating oil through the fluid pathway, and a regulating subsystem that is automatically or manually operative to initiate/terminate the operation of each metering valve, to regulate the rate of fluid flow therethrough, and/or to adjust the impingement pattern of the fluid jet discharged therefrom. Each metering valve is mounted in combination with the gearbox housing so that the corresponding spray rod is orientated to discharge the fluid jet to impinge upon a predetermined target area of the gearbox housing. The predetermined target area is an internal, localized wall region of the gearbox housing adjacent the structural members that support the transmission gearing.
