Mass spectrometry systems include a core featuring an ion source, an ion trap, and an ion detector connected along a gas path, a pressure regulation subsystem connected to the gas path and configured to regulate a gas pressure in the gas path, a sample pre-concentrator connected to the gas path, where the sample pre-concentrator includes an adsorbent material, and a controller connected to the sample pre-concentrator, where during operation of the system, the controller is configured to heat sample particles adsorbed on the adsorbent material to desorb the particles from the adsorbent material and introduce the desorbed particles into the gas path, and a pressure difference between a gas pressure in the sample pre-concentrator and a gas pressure in at least one of the ion source, the ion trap, and the ion detector when the desorbed particles are introduced into the gas path is 50 mTorr or less.

Method and apparatus for effecting a minimally invasive distal anastomosis for an aortic valve bypass

A method for performing a percutaneous valve bypass, the method comprising providing a bypass conduit having a first end and a second end; connecting the first end of the bypass conduit to a first vascular structure at a first anastomosis; connecting the second end of the bypass conduit to a second vascular structure at a second anastomosis; advancing a percutaneous valve along the bypass conduit to a deployment site located within the bypass conduit; and deploying the percutaneous valve at the deployment site so that fluid is permitted to pass from the second vascular structure to the first vascular structure but is prevented from passing from the first vascular structure to the second vascular structure.

Method and apparatus for effecting a percutaneous aortic valve bypass

A leak detector includes a leak detector inlet to receive a test gas; a vacuum pump coupled to the leak detector inlet; a test gas sensing unit connected through a passage to the leak detector inlet; and a membrane that is permeable to the test gas disposed in the passage between the leak detector inlet and the test gas sensing unit, the membrane having a permeance to the test gas that varies by less than five percent over a temperature range of T&#x2212;20K to T+20K, where Tis a design temperature. In addition, methods are provided for making a composite membrane that includes a semi-permeable membrane and a porous membrane. Furthermore, a reference leak, which includes a composite membrane is provided.

Test gas leak detection using a composite membrane

A leak detector includes a leak detector inlet to receive a test gas, a vacuum pump coupled to the leak detector inlet, a test gas sensing unit connected through a passage to the leak detector inlet, to sense the test gas, a membrane that is permeable to the test gas, the membrane disposed in the passage between the leak detector inlet and the test gas sensing unit, and a control mechanism to substantially terminate transmission of the test gas through the membrane in a time of 500 milliseconds or less. In other embodiments, the control mechanism substantially terminates transmission of the test gas through the membrane in a time of 100 milliseconds or less.

Methods and apparatus for test gas leak detection

A vacuum pumping system includes a primary vacuum pump having an inlet for coupling to a system, and a secondary vacuum pump having an inlet coupled to the exhaust of the primary vacuum pump. The primary vacuum pump is an oil-free, positive displacement vacuum pump having multiple clearance seals between the inlet and the exhaust. The primary vacuum pump may be a scroll vacuum pump, and the secondary vacuum pump may be an oil-free diaphragm pump. The system may include a valve coupled to the exhaust of the primary vacuum pump and configured to couple the exhaust of the primary vacuum pump to an interpump exhaust in response to a selected condition, such as the pressure level at the exhaust of the primary vacuum pump.

Light gas vacuum pumping system

A compact scroll pump includes a scroll set having an inlet and an outlet, and a drive mechanism. The scroll set includes a stationary scroll blade extending from a stationary plate and an orbiting scroll blade extending from an orbiting plate. The stationary and orbiting scroll blades are intermeshed together to define one or more interblade pockets. The orbiting scroll blade is located on a first side of the orbiting plate, and the drive mechanism is operatively coupled to a second side of the orbiting plate for producing orbiting motion of the orbiting scroll blade relative to the stationary scroll blade. The drive mechanism includes a motor and a crankshaft having an axis of rotation, and an orbiting bearing coupled between the crankshaft and the orbiting plate. The scroll set is configured such that an imaginary plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation passes through the orbiting bearing and at least a portion of the orbiting scroll blade.

Compact scroll pump

Vacuum pumping apparatus includes a scroll set having an inlet and an outlet. The scroll set includes a first stationary scroll blade and a second stationary scroll blade extending from a stationary plate and separated by a gap, and an orbiting scroll extending from an orbiting plate, wherein the first and second stationary scroll blades are intermeshed with the orbiting scroll blade to define one or more interblade pockets. The vacuum pumping apparatus further includes a relief port in the gap between the first and second stationary scroll blades and coupled through a relief passage to an exhaust, a relief valve in the relief passage, and a drive mechanism operatively coupled to the orbiting scroll element for producing orbiting motion of the orbiting scroll blade relative to the first and second stationary scroll blades.

Two stage scroll vacuum pump

A tip seal for use in a scroll-type vacuum pump includes a seal element and an energizer element affixed to the seal element. The scroll-type vacuum pump includes first and second scroll blades that are nested together to define one or more interblade pockets, and an eccentric drive that produces orbiting movement of the first scroll blade relative to the second scroll blade. At least one of the first and second scroll blades has a seal groove along an edge thereof. The tip seal is positioned in the seal groove between the first and second scroll blades. The energizer element is formed of a resilient material having multiple compressible voids, so that the energizer element having compressible voids is more compressible than the resilient material alone, when confined by the seal groove. In one embodiment, the energizer element is a foam such as a low porosity urethane foam. In another embodiment, the energizer element is an elastomer material having a predetermined pattern of voids.

Tip seal for scroll-type vacuum pump

A fluid handling apparatus, particularly a vacuum pump, has as a first stage a high volumetric displacement rate scroll pump of multiple nested interacting pairs of fixed and movable spiral-shaped blades supported in a housing between an inlet and an outlet. Each adjacent blade pair closes one inter-blade pocket in each cycle of operation. For very low base pressure vacuum applications, the adjacent blades extend about two revolutions to produce plural pockets in series. A second scroll pump mounted in the housing has its inlet fed directly from the first scroll outlet. The second scroll has a single pair of co-acting fixed and movable blades with multiple revolutions. A central drive shaft rotating in main bearings has an eccentric portion coupled to a plate that carries the movable blades of both scroll pumps. Synchronization cranks constrain the plate to orbit, not rotate. A purge gas flows over the crank bearings to sweep away and/or dilute corrosive fluids. It exhausts within the pump to the inter-stage pressure at the second stage inlet without adversely affecting the pump inlet pressure. Another purge gas flow sweeps corrosive gases from the main bearings, preferably formed as two sets of angular contact ball bearings aligned axially and oriented back-to-back.

High displacement rate,scroll-type, fluid handling apparatus

A positive displacement fluid handling apparatus has a first, high volumetric displacement rate scroll pump of nested interacting pairs of fixed and movable spiral-shaped blades supported in a housing between an inlet and an outlet. Each adjacent blade pair is of sufficient angular extent, preferably only about 360.degree., to close an inter-blade pocket. In a preferred form for a vacuum pump, a second scroll pump mounted in the housing has its fluid inlet in direct fluid communication with the first scroll outlet. The second scroll has a single pair of co-acting fixed and movable blades with multiple revolutions with a relatively short axial height. The low back leakage of this second pump allows the first pump to omit tip seals on the free spiral edges of the blades. The volumetric displacement rate of the first pump exceeds that of the second pump. An orbiting plate carries the movable blades of both scroll pumps. The drive has a small crank radius which reduces seal velocity and wear, and reduces radial crank force. Ball thrust bearings held between recesses in the periphery and in the plate offset axially directed compressive forces while synchronizing the orbiting movement. A fan mounted on the drive air cools the apparatus. There is no oil or other liquid lubricant or coolant exposed to the working fluid.

High displacement rate, scroll-type, fluid handling apparatus

A system for providing a cold environment which has a number of cooling stages with variable displacement volumes into which input fluid from a compressor flows in an input channel to and from the displacement volumes and output fluid flows in an output channel to the compressor. Volume changers vary the volumes of the displacement volumes and input fluid flowing to a first set of displacement volumes is pre-cooled by regenerative heat exchange and counterflow heat exchange and input fluid flowing to the final displacement volume is pre-cooled primarily by counterflow heat exchange. The volume changer at at least one of the stages is thermally decoupled from the input and output channels.
