Embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for clearing specified blocks of main storage. In one embodiment, an EADM start subchannel is executed. The instructions of the execution of the EADM start subchannel may include a SAP receiving an ADM request block, which specifies a main-storage-clearing operation command. The address and size of a block of main memory to be cleared by the SAP is specified in an MSB designated by the ADM request block.

An adapter is enabled for use. The enabling includes assigning one or more address spaces to the adapter, based on a request. For each address space assigned to the adapter, a corresponding device table entry is assigned. When the adapter is no longer needed, it is disabled and the assigned device table entries become available.

A tiered discovery capability is employed to obtain attributes regarding adapters of an I/O configuration. An apparatus for maintaining alignment between precision ground plates includes a first plate including a main body portion having plurality of passages. The first plate also includes a first heating device mounted to heat the main body portion to a selected temperature. A second plate including a main body portion having a plurality of passages is positioned adjacent the first plate. The second plate includes a second heating device mounted to heat the main body portion to a selected temperature. A controller operatively connected to the first and second heating devices selectively establishes a desired temperature in each of the first and second plates to facilitate a desired alignment between the plurality of passages in the first plate and the plurality of passages in the second plate.

An apparatus for simultaneously punching multiple holes in a ceramic substrate comprises a plurality of vertically movable and individually solenoid-operable punch drives disposed on a frame and selectively movable up and down relative to the frame. A horizontal arm extends from each of the punch drives and a punch extends from each of the extending arms and is movable vertically by the extending arms. Each of the punches is operable individually and operable simultaneously with selected others of the punches to punch one or more holes in a substrate at the same time. There may be provided at least four of the punches wherein the punches are disposed horizontally adjacent to one another in at least a 2.times.1 or a 2.times.2 grid with a spacing between adjacent punches of less than 8 mm. There may also be provided a control system for selectively operating the punch drives, with the control system adaptable to minimize the number of simultaneous strokes of the punches needed to punch a required number of holes in a substrate.

Punch apparatus develops momentum of a desired magnitude. The momentum is transferred to a punch for driving the punch from a reset position to a punch position.

A punch station for punching ceramic green sheets comprises a magnet plate and two flux guide plates to form the flux field within which a coil of wire resides and acts to cause the punching movement of a punch. The magnet plate allows the placement of adjacent punch stations more closely together than is possible when cylindrical magnets are used since the magnetic material lying between the punch being activated and the punches surrounding the activated punch has an additive effect and produces a more dense flux field than achievable with the cylindrical magnets. The flux guide plates concentrate the flux from the magnet plate into a small gap further increasing flux density in the working gap. The magnet plate overcomes the losses inherent with magnets separated by air gaps.

Magnetic plate punch actuator

A system for machining and for verifying the machining of substrates includes an energy beam located to impinge upon machined features of the substrates and a photodiode switching circuit matrix for detecting those portions of the energy beam which impinge upon the machined features of the substrate. The photodiode switching circuits include a current boost resistor in parallel with the photodiode which allows greater current to flow through the output diode, thereby increasing its switching speed. Pairs of photodiode circuits of the array are sequentially energized so that dual strings of outputs are produced. These outputs are then multiplexed and digitized. The digital outputs are compared in a verifier controller with a predetermined set of data to determine accuracy of the machining process. Substrates to be machined and verified can be mounted on a single X-Y table so that the machining and verification processes can be accomplished simultaneously.
