High bromide cubic grain emulsions

A radiographic silver halide film has improved processability because it includes a silver halide emulsion composed of cubic grains having a critical molar ratio of chloride, iodide, and bromide. In particular, the cubic grains comprise from about 1 to about 20 mol % of chloride and from about 0.25 to about 1.5 mol % of iodide, with the remainder being bromide. The cubic grains also have an ECD of from about 0.65 to about 0.8 &mgr;m. This film is particularly useful in mammography for imaging dense soft tissue.

Radiographic film for mammography with improved processability

A high-contrast room-light-handleable black-and-white silver halide photographic element that is especially useful in the field of graphic arts is comprised of a support, an imaging layer containing doped silver halide grains with a mean grain size of less than 0.12 micrometers, a print-out layer containing doped silver halide grains with a mean grain size in the range of from 0.14 to 0.4 micrometers, and a third set of doped silver halide grains with a mean grain size of less than 0.12 micrometers distributed within the print-out layer or within a separate safelight protection layer. Dopant levels are controlled so that the photographic speed of the imaging layer is higher than the photographic speed of the print-out layer and so that the photographic speed of the third set of silver halide grains is less than that of the imaging layer. The element utilizes very slow speed emulsions which render it capable of being handled in room light and is able to print-out a visible image on normal exposure and develop to full density upon being processed in conventional developing solutions.

High-contrast photographic elements with enhanced safelight performance

A high-contrast room-light-handleable black-and-white silver halide photographic element that is especially useful in the field of graphic arts is comprised of a support, an imaging layer containing doped silver halide grains with a mean grain size of less than 0.12 micrometers, and a print-out layer containing doped silver halide grains with a mean grain size in the range of from 0.14 to 0.4 micrometers. The element utilizes very slow speed emulsions which render it capable of being handled in room light and is able to print-out a visible image on normal exposure and develop to full density upon being processed in conventional developing solutions.

High-contrast photographic elements with improved print-out capability

A high-contrast room-light-handleable black-and-white silver halide photographic film especially adapted for use as a dry-dot-etchable contact film in the graphic arts is comprised of a support having in order on one side thereof (1) a radiation-sensitive layer comprising silver halide grains, a hydrophilic colloid and a polymer latex, (2) an interlayer comprising a hydrophilic colloid and a polymer latex, and (3) an overcoat layer comprising a hydrophilic colloid, a matting agent and a light-scattering agent, wherein the interlayer has a refractive index in the range of from about 1.4 to about 1.7 and a thickness which is in the range of from about 0.5 to about 5 microns and is at least twice that of the overcoat layer, and wherein the film contains in the radiation-sensitive layer, or a layer contiguous thereto, a hydrazine compound which functions as a nucleating agent. The combination of the light-scattering agent in the overcoat layer and the thick interlayer facilitates optical spreading of the image during contact exposure, and thereby enhances the performance of the contact film in use with multi-layer originals and in processes of dry dot etching. Futher improvement in performance is provided by the hydrazine compound which provides chemical image spread to supplement the optical image spread.

Nucleated contact film for use in graphic arts

A high-contrast room-light-handleable black-and-white silver halide photographic film especially adapted for use as a dry-dot-etchable contact film in the graphic arts is comprised of a support having in order on one side thereof (1) a radiation-sensitive layer comprising silver halide grains, a hydrophilic colloid and a polymer latex, (2) an interlayer comprising a hydrophilic colloid and a polymer latex, and (3) an overcoat layer comprising a hydrophilic colloid, a matting agent and a light-scattering agent, wherein the interlayer has a refracive index in the range of from about 1.4 to about 1.7 and a thickness which is in the range of from about 0.5 to about 5 microns and is at least twice that of the overcoat layer. The combination of the light-scattering agent in the overcoat layer and the thick interlayer facilitates optical spreading of the image during contact exposure, and thereby enhances the performance of the contact film in use with multi-layer originals and in processes of dry dot etching.

Contact film for use in graphic arts with two overcoat layers

Photographic silver halide emulsions are disclosed comprised of radiation sensitive silver halide grains exhibiting a face centered cubic crystal lattice structure internally containing a nitrosyl or thionitrosyl coordination ligand and a transition metal chosen from groups 5 to 10 inclusive of the periodic table of elements.

A dye useful for absorbing infrared radiation in photographic elements, having the structure: ##STR1## is disclosed. In this formula R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each independently represents sulfoalkyl, carboxyalkyl, or sulfatoalkyl of from 3 to 6 carbon atoms, having at least 3 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain between the nitrogen atom of each Z ring and the sulfo or sulfato group, and at least 2 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain between the nitrogen atom of each Z ring and the carboxy group. R.sub.3 and R.sub.5 are each hydrogen or together represent the atoms necessary to complete 5- or 6-membered carbocyclic ring, and R.sub.4 represents hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, aryl, cyano, halogen, or ##STR2## where R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 each independently represents alkyl of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or aryl, or together represent the non-metallic atoms necessary to form a 5- or 6-membered ring. X.sym. represents a cation. Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 each independently represent the atoms needed to complete an indole, naphthindole or benzindole nucleus.

Photographic elements containing infrared filter dyes

A dye useful for absorbing infrared radiation in photographic elements, having the structure: ##STR1## is disclosed. In this formula, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each independently represents sulfoalkyl, carboxyalkyl, or sulfatoalkyl, from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, having 2 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain linking the nitrogen atom of each Z ring and the sulfo or sulfato group, and 1 carbon atom in the alkyl chain linking the nitrogen atom of each Z ring and the carboxy group.

A process is disclosed for the continuous formation of radiation-sensitive silver halide emulsions. In the course of reacting a silver salt with a halide salt in the presence of a peptizer to form a radiation-sensitive silver halide emulsion a portion of the emulsion is withdrawn continuously from the reaction chamber while silver halide grain formation is occurring. The silver halide grains are formed in the presence of a sulfur-containing silver halide ripening agent, while the total halide ion concentration is concurrently controlled and maintained at less than 0.01 molar.
