A technique includes processing seismic data indicative of samples of at least one measured seismic signal in a processor-based machine to, in an iterative process, determine basis functions, which represent a constructed seismic signal. The technique includes in each iteration of the iterative process, selecting another basis function of the plurality of basis functions. The selecting includes based at least in part on the samples and a current version of the constructed seismic signal, determining a cost function; and interpreting the cost function based at least in part on a predicted energy distribution of the constructed seismic signal to select the basis function.

To process seismic data, a combined four-dimensional (4D) binning and regularization procedure is performed on the seismic data, where the combined 4D binning and regularization procedure includes computing measures associated with regularization of the seismic data, computing measures associated with 4D binning, and processing the seismic data according to the regularization measures and 4D binning measures.

Processing seismic data using combined regularization and 4D binning

A method of processing data sequences obtained at substantially the same time at locations spatially separated from one another is disclosed. A sequence indicative of a measure of spread of the data sequences or of selected data sequences is determined. A common signal data sequence may also be determined from the (selected) data sequences. The measure of spread of the data sequences is preferably normalized, for example relative to the absolute value of the common signal data sequence. The measure of spread is a measure of the noise to signal ratio in the initially-obtained data sequences. It may be used to control the parameters of other processing steps performed on the data sequences. Alternatively or additionally, the measure of spread may be output, for example for monitoring by an observer. The method can be applied to the processing of seismic data obtained using a single sensor seismic data acquisition system.
