This invention relates to coupling of polyethylene resins, more specifically coupling of polyethylene resins for use in extruded profiles, especially extruded profiles for sheet extrusion and cut sheet thermoforming applications and geomembranes. The process involves conveying a HDPE resin through an extruder, wherein the extruder comprises a feed zone, a first melt zone downstream of the feed zone, a second melt zone downstream of the first melt zone, and a third melt zone downstream of the second melt zone. The resin is melted in the first zone, contacted with oxygen in the second melt zone, and contacted antioxidant in the third melt zone.

Process for mixing polyvinyl chloride with a bio-based plasticizer

A polymer composition comprises a low-molecular-weight (LMW) ethylene polymer component and a high-molecular-weight (HMW) ethylene polymer component coupled with a polysulfonyl azide. Preferably, the LMW polyethylene component and the HMW polyethylene component co-crystallize in the composition such that it exhibits a single or substantially single peak in a lamella thickness distribution (LTD) curve. The ethylene polymer for the LMW and the HMW polyethylene components can be either homopolymer or ethylene copolymer. Preferably, both components are an ethylene copolymer of the same, or different, composition (that is, with the same or different comonomers). A method of making a pipe that includes selecting a polymer composition having a substantially single peak in the LTD curve is described. Compositions comprising a chromium-catalyzed ethylene polymer, coupled with a polysulfonyl azide are also described herein.

Rheology modified relatively high melt strength polyethylene compositions and methods of making pipes, films, sheets, and blow-molded articles

The invention is related to compositions suitable for the fabrication of pipes, and other articles, with excellent performance properties. The invention provides a composition, comprising a blend, wherein said blend comprises a high molecular weight ethylene-based interpolymer and a low molecular weight ethylene-based interpolymer, and the high molecular weight ethylene-based interpolymer is a heterogeneously branched linear or a homogeneously branched linear ethylene-based interpolymer, and has a density from 0.922 g/cc to 0.929 g/cc, and a high load melt index (I21) from 0.2 g/10 min to 1.0 g/10 min, and the low molecular weight ethylene-based interpolymer is heterogeneously branched linear or a homogeneously branched linear ethylene-based interpolymer, and has a density from 0.940 g/cc to 0.955 g/cc, and a melt index (I2) from 6 g/10 min to 50 g/10 min. The blend has a single peak in an ATREF profile eluting above 30&#xb0; C., and has a coefficient of viscosity average molecular weight (CMv) less than &#x2212;0.0032 in the log(calculated Mv) versus elution temperature, said CMv calculated in the range of elution temperatures from 70&#xb0; C. to 90&#xb0; C. The Mv is the viscosity average molecular weight.

Polyethylene compositions, methods of making the same, and articles prepared therefrom

The invention is related to compositions suitable for the fabrication of pipes, and other articles, with excellent performance properties. The invention provides a composition, comprising a blend, wherein said blend comprises a high molecular weight ethylene-based interpolymer and a low molecular weight ethylene-based interpolymer, and the high molecular weight ethylene-based interpolymer is a heterogeneously branched linear or a homogeneously branched linear ethylene-based interpolymer, and has a density from 0.922 g/cc to 0.929 g/cc, and a high load melt index (I21) from 0.2 g/10 min to 1.0 g/10 min, and the low molecular weight ethylene-based interpolymer is heterogeneously branched linear or a homogeneously branched linear ethylene-based interpolymer, and has a density from 0.940 g/cc to 0.955 g/cc, and a melt index (I2) from 6 g/10 min to 50 g/10 min. The blend has a single peak in an ATREF profile eluting above 30&#xb0; C., and has a coefficient of viscosity average molecular weight (CM?) less than &#x2212;0.0032 in the log(calculated Mv) versus elution temperature, said CMv calculated in the range of elution temperatures from 70&#xb0; C. to 90&#xb0; C. The Mv is the viscosity average molecular weight.

Dispersions and methods for forming dispersions that include a higher crystallinity polyolefin and at least one dispersing agent are disclosed. Various applications for use of the dispersions are also disclosed.

Polymer composition and process to manufacture high molecular weight-high density polyethylene and film therefrom

A reactive extrusion process for producing an ionomer is disclosed. The process comprising adding a polymer containing a carboxyl functionality to an extruder, then homogenously melting the polymer in a melting zone of the extruder. A first melt seal zone of the extruder is formed to separate the melting zone from an injection zone where an aqueous solution of metallic ions are added to the molten polymer. The first melt seal zone is formed by increasing the pressure in the melt seal zone to a pressure which is higher than the vapor pressure of the water at any point in the injection zone and the reaction zone. The aqueous solution of metallic ions is then mixed with the polymer containing the carboxyl functionality in a reaction zone of the extruder under conditions such that the metallic ions are substantially reacted with the carboxyl functionality. A pressure build-up zone is formed in the extruder, wherein the pressure build-up zone is located no earlier than at the end of the reaction zone wherein the pressure build-up zone is formed by increasing the pressure to a level such that the aqueous solution of metallic ions remains in the liquid phase for a time sufficient to allow for the desired reaction between the metallic ions and the carboxyl functionality of the polymer.

A process of producing a polyolefin, in one embodiment a polyethylene, and in a preferred embodiment a bimodal polyethylene comprising a high molecular weight component and a low molecular weight component, the process comprising providing a polyolefin having an Ivalue of from 2 to 100 g/10 min and a density of from 0.91 to 0.97 g/cm; followed by forming a melt of the polyolefin and passing the polyolefin through one or more active screen filter(s) having a mesh size of from 70 to 200 micron at a mass flux of from 5 to 100 lbs/hr/square inch; and isolating the polyolefin having passed through the screen filter.

Process for preparing a simulated in situ polyethylene blend

Polyethylene having a broad molecular weight distribution is extruded in pellet form using a pelletizing extruder having one or more zones essentially filled with the polyethylene and two or more zones partially filled with the polyethylene. The polyethylene is fed into the extruder at a temperature sufficient to melt the polyethylene, and a mixture of an inert gas and oxygen is fed into at least one partially filled zone of the extruder with the exception of the feed zone. The mixture contains about 1 to about 21% by volume oxygen based on the volume of the gas mixture.

Pelletizing of broad molecular weight polyethylene

There is provided a method which reduces fines while maintaining the bulk handling advantages of granular or particulate elastomers such as those produced in gas phase processes and which affords continuous bulk handling of synthetic rubbers or elastomers such as those produced in solution and/or suspension processes. The method comprises (1) feeding an crumb form elastomer or a granular elastomer which contains fines along with optionally one or more filler materials to a mixer/extruder where it is masticated and melted into a compound; (2) pumping the compound through an orifice of the mixer/extruder, and (3) cutting and forming the compound into shaped pellets ranging in size from about 0.5 to 30 mm.
