A diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) nozzle includes a first conduit, an outlet of the first conduit defining an inlet of a first mixing chamber; and a second conduit disposed around the first conduit, an outer surface of the first conduit and an inner surface of the second conduit defining a second flow path therebetween. A flow area of the second flow path decreases from an inlet of the second flow path to a throat, and increases from the throat to an outlet of the second flow path. The inner surface of the second conduit defines a peripheral wall of the first mixing chamber, and a peripheral wall of a second mixing chamber, the first flow path and the second flow path being in fluid communication with the second mixing chamber via the first mixing chamber.

Exhaust fluid injector assembly

A reduction device includes a housing defining an input chamber configured to receive exhaust from a power source, an output chamber, an exhaust channel configured to direct the exhaust from the input chamber to the output chamber, and a longitudinal axis. The reduction device also includes a treatment unit disposed in the exhaust channel and along the longitudinal axis. The treatment unit is configured to at least partly remove pollutant species from the exhaust. The reduction device also includes an attenuation component disposed in the housing and radially outward of the treatment unit. The attenuation component is fluidly connected to the exhaust channel, and is configured to attenuate a range of frequencies corresponding to operation of the power source. Additionally, the exhaust channel prohibits exhaust entering the input chamber from exiting the housing without passing through the treatment unit.

Noise attenuation components

A reductant impingement device includes a proximal end having an impingement pin with a convex surface; and a distal end having a body concentric with a longitudinal axis of the impingement pin. The distal end includes a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. A plurality of inner channels connects the first surface and the second surface, and a plurality of outer channels connects the first surface and the second surface, where the plurality of inner channels are disposed in a circular array at a first radial distance from a longitudinal axis of the impingement pin, and the plurality of outer channels are disposed in a circular array at a second distance from the longitudinal axis of the impingement pin.

An after-treatment system includes, in series along an exhaust gas flow direction through the after-treatment system: a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) delivery device, a soot-reducing device and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst.

After-treatment system

A mixing system for an aftertreatment system is disclosed. The mixing system includes a mixing tube. The mixing tube is provided in fluid communication with an exhaust conduit. The mixing system also includes a reductant injector positioned at an injection location on the mixing tube. The mixing system further includes a mixer assembly positioned downstream of the injection location. The mixer assembly includes a plurality of mixing elements provided in a series arrangement, such that each of the plurality of mixing elements is provided downstream of one another.

Mixing system for aftertreatment system

In one aspect, an exhaust treatment system includes a first particulate filter that has an oxidation catalyst and receives an exhaust stream from an engine. The first particulate filter has a first filter body that defines a plurality of flow-through channels, each open on the inlet and outlet sides of the first filter body. The first filter body also defines a plurality of wall-flow channels, each open on one of the inlet and outlet sides and closed on the other of the inlet and outlet sides. The system also has a second particulate filter that receives the exhaust stream from the first particulate filter. The second particulate filter has a second filter body that defines a plurality of wall-flow channels, each open on one of the inlet and outlet sides of the second particulate filter and closed on the other of the inlet and outlet sides of the second particulate filter.

An exhaust mixer provided may be used for mixing an additive, such as urea, in exhaust fluid flow. The exhaust mixer may be useful in reducing or preventing build-up of solid additive deposits by increasing efficiency of mixing of the additive. The exhaust mixer may be located at least partially within a mixing conduit and includes plurality of elongate mixing blades held in spaced configuration by a support. Each mixing blade may have a longitudinal axis extending along a longitudinal axis of the mixing conduit, wherein an injector module may be located upstream of the inlet of the mixing conduit.

Exhaust mixer, emissions cleaning module and method

Operating an exhaust particulate filter system for an internal combustion engine includes transmitting electromagnetic energy, for example having a frequency above about 2 GHz, through an exhaust particulate filter containing trapped soot. The transmitted electromagnetic energy may be attenuated in response to the trapped soot, and a filter soot loading value calculated based at least in part upon a correlation among an attenuation of the electromagnetic energy, a temperature of the filter, and a mass of the trapped soot. An algorithm based upon a partial derivative of an equation representing the correlation may be used in calculating the filter soot loading value, and a resulting soot mass. The calculated soot mass is used to determine a relative soot loading state of the filter in conjunction with information as to ash loading. Responsive to determining the relative soot loading state satisfies regeneration suitability conditions, a regeneration initiation command may be outputted.

Exhaust particulate filter system and operating method therefor

A machine includes an internal combustion engine, and an exhaust particulate filter system coupled therewith having an exhaust particulate filter for trapping particulates in exhaust from the internal combustion engine. A control system for the exhaust particulate filter includes a sensing mechanism such as an RF soot sensor and a data processor coupled with the sensing mechanism and configured to output a moisture compensation signal responsive to a pattern of inputs from the sensing mechanism indicative of moisture within the exhaust particulate filter, for controlling regeneration thereof.

Machine, exhaust particulate filter system, and method

A method of detecting ash in an exhaust particulate filter system for an internal combustion engine includes transmitting electromagnetic energy through an exhaust particulate filter containing soot and ash, and sensing a strength of the transmitted electromagnetic energy after having been attenuated in response to the soot. The method further includes electronically storing a filter monitoring history responsive to a difference between the transmitted strength and the sensed strength of the electromagnetic energy, and detecting an amount of the ash based at least in part upon a pattern of electromagnetic energy attenuation defined by the stored filter monitoring history. An exhaust particulate filter system for implementing related methodology includes a microprocessor configured to determine a value indicative of an amount of ash contained within an exhaust particulate filter responsive to a pattern of electromagnetic energy attenuation defined by a stored filter monitoring history.

Methods and system for ash detection in exhaust particulate filter

A power system comprising an engine that produces exhaust, a fuel system that injects a fuel into the engine, an aftertreatment system that treats the exhaust, and is controller. The aftertreatment system includes an oxidation catalyst that converts NO from the engine into NO2, a particulate filter that traps soot from the engine, and a sensor that provides an indication of the amount of soot in the particulate filter. The controller increases an engine fuel injection pressure when the amount of soot in the particulate filter is above a threshold.

The controller increases an engine fuel injection pressure when the amount of soot in the particulate filter is above a threshold.

An exhaust control system for use with a combustion engine is disclosed. The exhaust control system may have an exhaust passage configured to receive a flow of exhaust from the combustion engine, a particulate filter located within the exhaust passage, and an oxidation catalyst located upstream of the filter. The oxidation catalyst may be configured to promote regeneration of the particulate filter and may have an activation temperature range. The exhaust control system may also have a heating device located to selectively warm the oxidation catalyst to within the activation temperature range, and a controller in communication with the combustion engine and the heating device. The controller may be configured to detect a loading of the particulate filter exceeding a first loaded threshold amount, and to detect a low temperature condition of the combustion engine. The controller may further be configured to activate the heating device to warm the oxidation catalyst when the loading of the particulate filter exceeds the first loaded threshold amount during the low temperature condition and until the loading of the particulate filter is reduced below a second loaded threshold amount.

An exhaust component for use with a combustion engine is disclosed. The exhaust component may have a housing at least partially defining an inlet and an outlet, and a treatment device supported by the housing in communication with exhaust passing from the inlet to the outlet. The exhaust component may also have a life indicator permanently associated with at least one of the housing and the treatment device.

An exhaust system for use with a combustion engine is disclosed. The exhaust system may have an exhaust passage configured to receive a flow of exhaust from the combustion engine, a particulate filter located within the exhaust passage, and a heating device located to selectively warm the flow of exhaust passing through the particulate filter. The exhaust system may also have a controller in communication with the combustion engine and the heating device. The controller may be configured to continuously determine an amount of particulate matter within the particulate filter, continuously determine a desired regeneration temperature based on the amount of particulate matter, and continuously determine an error value as a function of the desired regeneration temperature and an actual regeneration temperature. The controller may be further configured to determine an amount of particulate matter within the particulate filter, and adjust an amount of warming provided by the heating device based on the error value.
