In a wireless telecommunications network, apparatus and method for code gapping messages from mobile switching centers to switching control points. The switching control point, (SCP), sends a stand-alone message containing only code gap control information to each of the MSCs served by the SCP. The code gap control message specifies the types of messages which are to be subject to code gap control, as well as the code gap interval and overall timer interval. The message further specifies such details as the range of digits of calls for which messages are to be subject to code gap control. Advantageously, the specification of the details of code gap control is made more efficient.

Automatic code gapping (ACG) for wireless systems

An NPA split management system and associated methods for receiving from a user descriptive instructions regarding an upcoming NPA split, and responsively updating components of the Intelligent Network to reflect corresponding changes in the NPA codes assigned to lines, subscribers, services, etc. A user interface operating in conjunction with a Service Management System allows the user to declare an NPA split and define its characteristics, including the old NPA code, the new NPA code, the central office codes to be &ldquo;transferred&rdquo; to the new NPA, and the dates of beginning and end of the permissive dialing period (PDP). The SMS contains indicia corresponding to SMS-managed databases, or tables, records, or fields thereof, which definitively specify whether the data contained therein is affected by an NPA split. The SMS determines which items require updating to the new NPA code, and on which components the affected databases or services reside. The SMS transmits to each affected Intelligent Network component instructions to update the affected databases (or other items) by replacing the old NPA code with the new NPA code. The Intelligent Network component executes the update instruction and installs a translation table entry. When transactions arrive during the PDP, the Intelligent Network component translates mentions of the old NPA to the new NPA before providing the requested service, as the updated database no longer has references to the old NPA.

A private wireless system is configured for providing a call hand-off capability for a mobile station communicating with a private base station operating in the wireless system. The call in the wireless system is handed off to the public cellular system whenever the mobile station is moved near the fringe of the coverage area provided by the private base station. Once the hand-off is initiated in the private base station, a process is executed in which the private base station and a local exchange carrier cooperatively switch an active call from an existing wireless communications path established between the private base station and the mobile station to a newly created wireless communications path established between the mobile station and a public base station in the cellular system.

In a method implemented by a telecommunications switch, a call request is made for a called party having a predetermined directory number. A determination is made if preconnection services are to be provided for the called party, and if such services are to be provided, a service node to provide the services is identified. A further determination is made if the call request is from other than the selected service node. If the call request is not from the selected service node, the call request is routed to the service node for preconnection services. If a call request is from the selected service node, the call is routed to the called party. This permits a selected service node to originate a separate call to the called party so that services can be provided on behalf of the called party in response to a call request made by a calling party. This method allows preconnection services to be provided without the requirement of multiple directory numbers being assigned to the called party.
