A compost bin module for aerobic decomposition of organic matter. The module is in the form of a container comprising a free-standing portable structural frame for placement on or above the ground. It further comprises removable sidewalls, and an open top and open bottom. Each of said removable side walls insertable into the structural frame and laterally restrained thereby. The structural frame comprises at least three spaced-apart posts, at least an equal number of structural members spanning between and interconnecting the posts, each of the structural members spanning between two adjacent posts at or near their base.

An axial flow rotary valve () for an internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder head () having a bore in which an axial flow rotary valve () rotates. The valve having a cylindrical centre portion (), and an inlet and an exhaust port () terminating as openings () in the centre portion, the openings periodically communicating with a combustion chamber () through a window () in the bore. The clearance between the centre portion and the bore being sealed by an array of floating seals comprising at least two axial seals () spaced apart on opposite sides of the window. The assembly further comprising at least one floating axially extending masking seal () being disposed outside the window and circumferentially remote from the axial seals.

Port sealing in a rotary valve

An axial flow rotary valve for an engine, that is rotatable about an axis within the bore of a cylinder head. The valve communicating with a respective cylinder in which a piston reciprocates, and an ignition means associated with the cylinder. The valve is provided with inlet and exhaust peripheral openings that periodically communicate with cylinder through a window in the bore. A combustion chamber is formed in the space between the crown of the piston at top dead centre and the cylinder head and the valve. The ignition means comprising first and second spark plugs, each of said spark plugs having a nose located at one end thereof exposed to the combustion chamber, said noses being disposed on opposite sides of said window within the axial extremities of said window.

The array of floating seals surrounding a window () in the bore () of the cylinder head () through which the ports () of the valve () communicate with a combustion chamber (). The array of floating seals comprising axial seals () and circumferential seals () housed in slots () in the bore of the cylinder head wherein the circumferential seals are disposed axially between the ends of the axial seals.

A variable valve timing mechanism for an internal combustion engine comprising at least one rotary valve ( ) having at least two ports terminating as openings ( ) in its periphery, a cylinder head ( ) having a bore in which the rotary valve ( ) rotates, and a window ( ) in the bore communicating with a combustion chamber ( ). Variable timing mechanism for a rotary valve

A rotary valve for an internal combustion engine, of the hollow cylindrical type, characterized in that there are provided in a bore of a cylinder head, in which the valve rotates, oil applicators arranged on either side of openings in the valve, each applicator being loaded by a spring against the surface of the valve at a position such that each applicator bears against the surface of that part of the valve lying between the outer axial extremities of the openings and an adjacent circumferential seal, each applicator allowing flow of oil through it onto the surface of the valve by means of one or more small internal passages.

A rotary valve assembly for an internal combustion engine characterized in that the valve has a combination of axial sealing elements (21,22) and inner circumferential sealing elements (23,24) arranged to form a first seal pressurizing cavity extending circumferentially between the axial sealing elements (21,22) and two second seal pressurizing cavities each lying between the inner (23,24) and adjacent outer (25,26) circumferential sealing elements axially on each side of a window opening in a cylinder head (16) in which the valve rotates, the arrangement being such as to permit high pressure combustion gas to pass from the first cavity to the two second cavities whereby curing combustion the outer circumferential sealing elements (25,26) are caused to seal the second pressurizing cavities by being forced against the axially outermost sides of circumferentially extending grooves (36,37) in which they are located to prevent axially outward movement of gas, and the inner circumferential sealing elements (23,24) are caused to be loaded axially inwardly to seal against axially innermost sides of circumferentially extending grooves (34,35) in which they are located and to load the four circumferential sealing elements (23,24,25,26) radially to seal against a bore surface (19) in which the valve is housed and against which they are preloaded.
