A multipole circuit breaker having a single contact operating mechanism for all poles and a fault current sensing means for automatic tripping of the breaker is provided with alarm switch means to indicate when opening of the circuit breaker has been caused by a fault condition. The operating mechanism includes a metal frame to which a latchable cradle is pivotally mounted. The frame includes parallel guide slots through which a formed pin actuator extends to be moved by the cradle as it operates between its latched and released (tripped) positions. A spring connected between the mechanism frame and the pin actuator biases the latter toward the cradle. An insulating extension element is adjustably mounted on the actuator to transmit motion of the latter to operate a switch in an alarm circuit, in accordance with cradle position.

Bell alarm for circuit breaker

An electric motor for driving a circuit breaker operating handle is connected to the latter by two sets of linkages. The first set of linkages includes a drive arm and a driven arm mounted on fixed spaced centers and interconnected by a cam means. The drive arm is pivoted by connection to the drive motor through gearing and a slip clutch, and mounts a roller entered into a cam slot formed in the driven arm. The second set of linkages consists of a drive link and a main link also mounted on fixed spaced centers with the main link having means for engaging and moving a circuit breaker operating handle. The drive and main links are connected by a roller-slot arrangement, with the roller being positively guided along an arcuate path formed about a center remote from the centers of the links and arms. Positive guidance of this connecting roller causes the effective lengths of the links to change in accordance with different positions of the circuit breaker handle. The centers of the driven arm and drive link coincide so that movement of the driven arm causes corresponding movement of the drive link. The combination of cam connected drive and driven arms together with a positively guided roller to change the effective lengths of drive and main links enables a relatively small electric motor to rapidly operate a very large circuit breaker.

Electrical operator for circuit breakers

In a circuit breaker, the movable contact carrying contact arm is pivotally connected to the contact carrier which pivots on the circuit breaker frame; the contact arm is stamped copper; the contact arm carrier pivot connection includes a pin passing through the walls of the carrier and with respect to which the contact arm pivots; also, improved means for establishing pressure of movable contacts.

Circuit breaker contact arm and attachment means

A baffle assembly covering a vent opening in a molded case circuit breaker housing is constructed of two identical platelike elements having integral face protrusions. These elements are stacked in face-to-face relationship with their protrusions in engagement to maintain a narrow space between the element faces. Edge notches are provided to orient the elements so that the perforations of one element are misaligned with respect to the perforations of the other element so that arcing gases do not flow in a straight path through the baffle assembly.
