A radiographic silver halide film useful for mammography comprises a support having a cubic grain silver halide emulsion on one side. The cubic grains are spectrally sensitized with a combination of first and second spectral sensitizing dyes that provides a combined maximum J-aggregate absorption of from about 540 to about 560 nm. The first spectral sensitizing dye is an anionic benzimidazole-benzoxazole carbocyanine and the second spectral sensitizing dye is an anionic oxycarbocyanine. The first and second spectral sensitizing dyes are present in a molar ratio of from about 0.25:1 to about 4:1.

High bromide cubic grain emulsions

A blue-sensitive radiographic silver halide film comprises a silver halide emulsion layer comprising predominantly tabular silver halide grains that have an aspect ratio of at least 15, a grain thickness of at least 0.1 &mgr;m, and comprise at least 90 mol % bromide and up to 4 mol % iodide, based on total silver halide. Substantially all of the iodide is present in an internal localized portion of the tabular silver halide grains that excludes the surface of the grains. The tabular silver halide grains are dispersed in a hydrophilic polymeric vehicle mixture comprising at least 0.5% of oxidized gelatin, based on the total dry weight of the polymeric vehicle mixture in the emulsion layer. The tabular silver halide grains are spectrally sensitized using a combination of spectral sensitizing dyes to provide increased speed and reduced dye stain. The dyes have maximum J-aggregate absorptions on the tabular silver halide grains of from about 380 to about 500 nm, wherein the maximum J-aggregate absorption of one spectral sensitizing dye is from about 20 to about 50 nm lower in wavelength than the maximum J-aggregate absorption of the second spectral sensitizing dye.

A radiographic silver halide film has improved processability because it includes a silver halide emulsion composed of cubic grains having a critical molar ratio of chloride, iodide, and bromide. In particular, the cubic grains comprise from about 1 to about 20 mol % of chloride and from about 0.25 to about 1.5 mol % of iodide, with the remainder being bromide. The cubic grains also have an ECD of from about 0.65 to about 0.8 &mgr;m. This film is particularly useful in mammography for imaging dense soft tissue.

A high quality direct radiographic film is useful for dental care. The film contains relatively high silver coverage preferably coated on both sides of the support. It also contains sufficient silver halide desensitizer to reduce silver halide sensitivity to X-radiation by at least 0.02 log E. The combination of silver and desensitizer coverages provides sufficiently high photographic speed, excellent image quality and increased stability to background radiation sources.

A radiographic element is disclosed containing in a high bromide tabular grain emulsion layer a 5-mercaptotetrazole to increase covering power. The 5-mercaptotetrazole is additionally capable of increasing imaging speed and producing colder image tones when provided with a phenyl substituent in the 1 ring position, which phenyl substituent is in turn substituted in its para position with a substituent satisfying the formula R(OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.n O-- wherein n is an integer of from zero to 5; when n is 1 to 5, R is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; and, when n is zero, R is methyl.

Dual-coated radiographic elements are disclosed employing thin tabular grain emulsions that exhibit increased covering power and colder image tones by limiting hydrophilic colloid coating coverages in the thin tabular grain emulsion layers to less than 15 mg/dm.sup.2.

A dual-coated radiographic element is disclosed comprised of a blue tinted film support having coated on each of its faces a spectrally sensitized high bromide tabular grain emulsion. The properties of a maximum density of at least 3.0, an average contrast of at least 2.7, and a b* value more negative than -5.0 at a silver coating coverage on each major surface of the support of less than 12 mg/dm.sup.2, are imparted by (1) the support having a neutral density of at least 0.18, (2) tabular grains accounting for at least 90 percent of total grain projected area having a mean thickness of 0.2 micrometer or less and a coefficient of variation of equivalent circular diameter less than 20 percent, (3) a covering power enhancing compound containing at least one divalent sulfur atom adsorbed to surfaces of the silver halide grains, (4) a water soluble polymer chosen from the class consisting of polyacrylamide and dextran, in a weight ratio of the polymer to the gelatino-vehicle of at least 0.1:1, and (5) hardening of the gelatino-vehicle being chosen to allow a weight gain following processing and before drying of greater than 200 percent, based on the total weight of gelatino-vehicle.
