An improved plasticized polyvinyl chloride interlayer for laminated safety glass, and an improved method of manufacturing a laminated safety glass including such plasticized polyvinyl chloride containing film is disclosed. An improved functional silane adhesion promoter is utilized in such a manner so as to impact energy dissipation is maximized while structural integrity is maintained. The plasticized polyvinyl chloride interlayer is formulated so as to provide improved long term heat stability at service use temperatures.

Plasticized polyvinyl chloride and interlayer thereof

A laminated safety glass is formed of an inboard glass sheet, an outboard glass sheet and a plasticized polyvinyl chloride containing interlayer therebetween. The outboard glass sheet has an average transmittance of radiation in the range of 300-340 nm of less than about 20%, and preferably less than about 1%. The outboard glass sheet also has an average transmittance of radiation in the range of 340 to 500 nm of more than about 50%. The outboard glass sheet may be formed of an ultraviolet radiation absorbing glass, such as an ultraviolet radiation absorbing green glass.

A process for polymerizing vinyl chloride alone or a mixture of vinyl chloride and other vinyl monomer(s) with hydroxy containing monomer(s), and the copolymer obtained thereby. The hydroxy containing monomer(s) is obtained by the partial allylation of dihydroxy or polyhydroxy alcohols. The copolymers are prepared by suspension polymerization. The presence of the hydroxyl groups significantly modifies the characteristics of the polymers. Plasticizer-take-up is increased and dry-time is reduced significantly. Furthermore, the hydroxyl groups become the sites for postpolymerization reactions due to their polarity and reactivity.

Safety glass interlayer formed of a vinyl chloride copolymer

An improved method is provided for copolymerizing vinyl chloride with allyl glycidyl ether and a vinyl ester. The copolymers so formed include 70-99 weight percent of vinyl chloride, 0.05-15 weight percent of allyl glycidyl ether, and 0.05-15 weight percent of a vinyl ester, preferably vinyl acetate. The copolymers of this invention can be compounded to provide films exhibiting improved heat stability, low haze, and good adhesion to solid surfaces such as glass and metal. The compounded resins thus obtained may be especially advantageously used in forming the interlayer of laminated safety glazings, such as vehicle windshields and architectural glazings. The copolymerization of vinyl chloride, allyl glycidyl ether, a vinyl ester and small amounts of an unsaturated organic trifunctional silane provide self-adhesion without gelation.

Laminated safety glass includes a pair of glass sheets bonded together with a self-adhering composite interlayer. The composite interlayer is formed of a support layer including a plasticized PVC containing film and a polymeric adhesive layer on one, or preferably both, of the major surfaces of the support layer. The adhesive layers are formed of a polymeric material which is capable of adhering to the PVC containing support layer and to the glass sheets. The respective refractive indices of the adhesive layers and the support layer are matched as closely as possible in order to eliminate optical distortion caused by interfacial reflections of incident light. A preferred copolymer resin for forming the adhesive layers is poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate-co-maleic acid).

When a dispersion of oxide ceramic particles in certain volatile organic solvents is mixed with less than about 2 percent by weight (based on the weight of particles) of an oligomeric polysiloxanol dispersant, and the dispersion allowed to settle, the oligomer provides a multiplicity of OH groups, many of which are available for interactive bonding to the surfaces of the particles. The net result is that the particles settle more slowly; also, the sediment has a density higher than that of sediment from a dispersion of the same particles in the same solvent mixed with the monomeric silane from which the oligomer was formed. Exceptionally dense and strong 'tape', for making sintered circuitized multilayered ceramic structures, is produced by capitalizing on this phenomenon. The effectiveness of the oligomer is predicated upon the prehydrolysis of the siloxane, prior to forming the dispersion. In a stable suspension with the binder, the slip viscosity is lowered compared to that of a slip containing no dispersant, or the siloxane monomer as dispersant, at dynamic shear rates in the range of 5-70 sec.sup.-1. Green cards cut from the tape have greater pull strength, higher Young's modulus, higher stress at break, higher adhesion to each other in a stack, and higher strain at break than green cards made from a slip containing no polysiloxanol oligomer.

A laminated glazing unit composed of an improved polymer interlayer composite interposed between two glass sheets and its method of manufacture are disclosed. The improved interlayer contains various layers with appropriate thicknesses of silane primer, poly(ethylene vinyl acetate) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) arranged and bonded together in a particular fashion to increase the fragment retention capabilities of the laminated glazing while also improving the overall penetration resistance and safety characteristics of the structure without increasing the rigidity to a point where it poses a safety threat to the occupant.
