Patient-specific instrumentation for use when performing articular joint repair is provided. A patient-specific jig is adapted to be positioned over a bone at an articular surface thereof for assisting in preparing the bone surface for reception of a prosthesis. The jig comprises a bone contacting portion adapted to matingly contact a portion of the articular surface of the bone and a cutting slot adapted to receive therein a saw blade for resecting the articular surface of the bone. The cutting slot may be press-fitted into the opening of a cut guide. A patient-specific plate and a patient-specific rotational guide are also provided for guiding a positioning of the prosthesis over the resected surface of the bone. A method for manufacturing the patient-specific jig is further provided.

Patient-specific instrumentation and method for articular joint repair

A method of creating a patient specific instrument (PSI) for use in knee replacement surgery is described which includes using a digital bone model generated using at least two two-dimensional X-ray scans of a bone, each of the X-ray scans being taken from different angular positions. Locations for one or more anchor points on the PSI which are adapted to abut a surface of the bone are determined, the determined locations of the anchor points being disposed on the PSI at locations corresponding to areas of expected high accuracy on the digital bone model generated by the X-ray scans. The areas of expected high accuracy include at least a peripheral bone contour in at least one of the angular position of the X-ray scans. A method of positioning a surgical guide using such a PSI is also disclosed.

Patient specific instrumentation (PSI) for orthopedic surgery and systems and methods for using X-rays to produce same

A system and method for generating a model of a patient specific cut guide instrument for harvesting a graft comprises a model of a graft defined by an implant interface surface, a bone interface surface, and a spatial geometry therebetween, the model being specific to a patient. A patient-specific instrument generator outputs the model of the patient specific cut guide instrument, the patient-specific instrument generator including a position determination module for orienting and positioning at least a first guide axis, and for positioning an abutment on a model of a donor bone as a function of the spatial geometry, and an instrument body generator module for generating a model of the patient specific cut guide instrument comprising a body supporting a cut guide to perform a depth cut in the donor bone positioned and oriented as a function of a contact of the body with the abutment on the donor bone, and of the model of the graft, a first guide channel for alignment with the first guide axis, and at least one anchor guide for securing the patient specific instrument cut guide on the donor bone as abutted with the abutment and aligned with the first guide axis, whereby the patient specific cut guide instrument is used for harvesting the graft for subsequent implanting without alterations to the spatial geometry of the graft.

Patient-specific bone grafting system and method

The patient specific instrument (PSI) assembly for guiding a surgical tool on a tibia during a knee replacement surgery includes an extra-medullary portion at a distal end, an elongated rod connected at a distal end to the extra-medullary portion and extending in a direction along a mechanical axis of the tibia, and an upper mounting portion at a proximal end. The extra-medullary portion has a pair of spaced apart malleoli clamping elements with a size and/or relative position that is patient-specific for engaging respective ones of the lateral and medial malleoli. The upper mounting portion including a base body connected to a proximal end of the elongated rod and a surgical guide having guide openings extending therethrough and anchor element(s) on the upper mounting portion in locations adapted to overlay a peripheral contour of the tibia. The peripheral contour of the tibia including an anterior surface of the proximal tibia.

Patient specific instrumentation (PSI) for orthopedic surgery

A patient-specific cutting assembly comprises a model file including geometrical data of a bone of the patient, of an intramedullary canal of the bone, and a planned orientation of a cutting block. A fixing rod is adapted to be longitudinally inserted in and extending partially from the intramedullary canal. A patient-specific cutting block is connectable to the fixing rod. The patient-specific cutting block includes a structure having a patient specific geometry corresponding to the model file of the patient, the structure configured to be connected to a portion of the fixing rod projecting from the bone in a unique coupling orientation. A cutting guide is connected to the structure, the cutting guide being in the planned orientation when the structure is connected to the portion of the fixing rod projecting from the bone.

Patient-specific cutting block and method of manufacturing same

A method of creating a patient specific instrument (PSI) for use in knee replacement surgery is described which includes performing at least two two-dimensional X-ray scans of a bone, each of the X-ray scans being taken from different angular positions, generating a digital bone model of the bone based on the X-ray scans, planning the PSI based on the digital bone model, including determining locations for one or more anchor points on the PSI which are adapted to abut a surface of the bone, the determined locations of the anchor points being disposed on the PSI at locations corresponding to areas of expected high accuracy on the digital bone model generated by the X-ray scans. Methods and systems include a patient specific instrument for installing a glenosphere within a joint. For example, a method for implanting a glenosphere includes installing first and second pins in a glenoid cavity using a patient specific instrument that sets a distance between the guide pins, installing an implant at the location of the second guide pin, and guiding a glenosphere onto the implant using a helper connected to the first pin. In another example, a glenosphere helper includes a cup shaped body having an interior surface for engaging at least a portion of an outer surface of the glenosphere, and a flange extending from the cup to receive a guide pin at a point, the flange extending from the cup shaped body such that the point is positioned outside a periphery of the glenosphere.

A system for generating a model of a patient specific cut guide instrument for harvesting a graft comprises a model of a graft defined by an implant interface surface, a bone interface surface, and a spatial geometry therebetween, the model being specific to a patient. A method and system for planning a creation of a cement bore in a bone comprises obtaining a virtual model of a bone, the model of the bone including a proximal bone surface, a distal bone surface, and a depth profile between the proximal bone surface and the distal bone surface. A planned positioning of a first implant selected to be implanted in the proximal bone surface is obtained. An identity of at least one tool used to alter the proximal bone surface to receive the first implant in the planned positioning and obtaining geometry data for the at least one tool is obtained. A cement bore required in the bone using the geometry data of the at least one tool and the planned positioning of the first implant is generated. The virtual model of the bone with the cement bore indicative of a relation between the cement bore and the distal bone surface is output.

Method and system for assisting implant placement in thin bones such as scapula

A method of creating a patient specific instrument (PSI) for use in knee replacement surgery is described which includes performing at least two X-ray scans of a bone, each of the X-ray scans being taken from different angular positions, generating a digital bone model of the bone based solely on the X-ray scans, planning the PSI based on the digital bone model, including determining locations for one or more anchor points on the PSI which are adapted to abut a surface of the bone, the determined locations of the anchor points being disposed on the PSI at locations corresponding to areas of expected high accuracy on the digital bone model generated by the X-ray scans. The areas of expected high accuracy include at least a peripheral bone contour in at least one of the angular position of the X-ray scans. A suite of such PSI instruments is also described.
