A process comprising: A) contacting one or more of sources of silicon oxide, selected from water soluble.silica sources arid alkali metal silicates, with an aqueous reaction medium, comprising one or more nonionic surfactants and thereby forming mesoporous structures comprising crosslinked silicon oxide units, wherein said crosslinked silicon oxide units have pores of about 1 to about 100 nanometers and wherein the aqueous reaction medium exhibits a pH of about 0 to about 4.0; B) exposing the aqueous reaction medium containing the mesoporous structures to elevated temperatures for a time sufficient to achieve the desired structure and pore size. Preferred water soluble silica sources comprise silicic acid, or polysilicic acids, The aqueous reaction, medium is prepared by combining one or more nonionic surfactants and water, theteby forming an aqueous, reaction medium, comprising micelles. Preferably, the aqueous reaction medium further comprises, a. micelle swelling agent capable of swelling micelles formed by the surfactant in the aqueous reaction medium. In one embodiment the process forms structures with struts comprised of crosslinked silicon oxides which connect at least some of the pore forming structures.

High porosity mesoporous siliceous structures

Prepare nanofoam by (a) providing an aqueous solution of a flame retardant dissolved in an aqueous solvent, wherein the flame retardant is a solid at 23&#xb0; C. and 101 kiloPascals pressure when in neat form; (b) providing a fluid polymer composition selected from a solution of polymer dissolved in a water-miscible solvent or a latex of polymer particles in a continuous aqueous phase; (c) mixing the aqueous solution of flame retardant with the fluid polymer composition to form a mixture; (d) removing water and, if present, solvent from the mixture to produce a polymeric composition having less than 74 weight-percent flame retardant based on total polymeric composition weight; (e) compound the polymeric composition with a matrix polymer to form a matrix polymer composition; and (f) foam the matrix polymer composition into nanofoam having a porosity of at least 60 percent.

The present invention is drawn to systems and methods for suppressing damaging effects from dissolution of silica present in an ink-jet printhead which contains high pH, pigmented ink. The systems and methods suppress the damaging effects of dissolution of silica by the action of a basic ink by adding a metal ion to the ink composition which forms a complex with the silica. The metal ion passivates the silica thus retarding the dissolution of silica thereby reducing promotion of ink kogation, silicate ring formation, and silicate deposit on ink-jet printhead resistors which effectively improves durability and shelf life of the ink-jet printhead.

Inks with improved performance

An inkjet ink set includes eleven colored inks and a surface enhancing ink. The eleven colored inks include a magenta ink, a light magenta ink, a yellow ink, a cyan ink, a light cyan ink, a medium gray ink, a light gray ink, a photo black ink, a red ink, a green ink, and a blue ink. Briefly described, embodiments of this disclosure include fusible print media, methods of making fusible print media, and systems for preparing a fused ink-jet image. A gray ink composition includes an ink vehicle having a black pigment and at least one color pigment dispersed therein. An anionic dispersant is: a) dispersed in the ink vehicle; b) associated with at least a portion of a surface of at least one of the dispersed black pigment or the at least one dispersed color pigment; and/or c) combinations thereof. At least one of the black pigment or the color pigment(s) has an anionic surfactant that is associated with at least another portion of the surface thereof.

Gray ink composition and method of making the same

An inkjet ink including a polymer-attached pigment formulated to exhibit a compact configuration and an elongated configuration, which provides the polymer-attached pigment with a variable particle size. The polymer-attached pigment may include a pigment having at least one polymer attached to its surface. The at least one polymer may be formed from a hydrophobic segment and a hydrophilic segment, where the hydrophilic segment is soluble in an aqueous environment and the hydrophobic segment is insoluble in the aqueous environment. The polymer-attached pigment may be dispersed in an ink vehicle to provide a low viscosity inkjet ink. The inkjet ink may optionally include at least one binder formed from a hydrophobic segment and two hydrophilic segments. A method of producing a printed image having good durability and gloss is also disclosed.

Pigment dispersions that exhibit variable particle size or variable vicosity

Smear resistant ink jet ink images and methods for making such are disclosed and described. Generally, a smear resistant ink jet ink image includes an ink jet ink image upon a print substrate, and a water insoluble protective film having contact with the ink jet ink in the image. In one aspect, the film may include a combination of water soluble film forming polymers that become water insoluble upon interaction with one another. In another aspect, the water soluble film forming polymers may be interacted at the print substrate to form the water insoluble film.

Auxiliary fluids which give improved print permanence

The present invention provides ink-jet inks for ink-jet printing, comprising from 0.1% to 5% by weight of at least one dye; from 8% to 20% by weight of a diol selected from the group consisting of 1,2-pentanediol, 1,2-hexanediol, and combinations thereof; from 0.1% to 5% by weight of an aliphatic alcohol or aliphatic alcohol mixture; and from 0.1% to 1.5% by weight of at least one component independently selected from the group consisting of buffers, biocides, and metal chelators, with the proviso that no surfactant is present in the ink-jet ink composition. The ink-jet inks formulated according to the present invention provide good dot size, color-to-color bleed alleviation, improved coalescence, less chia, and improved print head materials compatibility.

Ink-jet inks for improved image quality and reliability

An inkjet ink is provided that has a greater organic content than prior art inks. However, it is not simply enough to increase the organic content; other factors must be considered as well. These include controlling viscosity and surface tension, as well as maintaining acceptable drytime. An inkjet ink composition that evidences reduced outgassing and reduces paper cockle and curl comprises about 25 to 50 wt % of one or more organic co-solvents, has a viscosity of 10 cp or less, and has a surface tension of 40 dyne/cm or less. Advantageously, using a higher solvent ink reduces cockle and curl. Cockle and curl are also reduced as the water content of the ink is reduced. The present invention uses the higher solvent inks in combination with underprinting. In underprinting, a fixer solution is first &ldquo;printed&rdquo; on the print medium, followed by printing the inkjet ink thereon. There is a synergism to this combination. Together, weaknesses of both approaches are addressed. The advantages are a longer life pen, due to the reduction of outgassing of the ink, and reduced cockle and curl.
